Florida @ Detroit 5-4 SO - Nick Bjugstad scored in a shootout and Tim Thomas stopped all three attempts, lifting the Florida Panthers to a 5-4 win at Joe Louis Arena on Sunday after trailing by two goals twice in regulation. The Red Wings, who were without injured stars Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, allowed Brad Boyes to score a game-tying, shorthanded goal with 3:46 left in the third period, a couple of minutes after teammate Drew Shore scored. Detroit's Gustav Nyquist and Daniel Alfredsson scored 1:19 apart midway through the second and Riley Sheahan had a goal late in the second period to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead. Jonas Gustavsson, filling in for the injured Jimmy Howard, had 33 saves in his third straight start for the Red Wings. Thomas stopped 26 shots, and was fortunate defenseman Tom Gilbert kicked away a shot in overtime. The Panthers started and finished strong. Sean Bergenheim put the Panthers ahead just 1:48 into the game. In between, they bounced back well enough to stay in the game and ultimately to force overtime and the shootout. After the Red Wings surged ahead 3-1 in the second, Jesse Winchester pulled the Panthers within a goal midway through the third. Tatar restored the two-goal lead a few minutes later by shooting high when Thomas went low. Shore scored to make it 4-3 with 5:32 left in the game. Zetterberg was a late scratch with a back injury after being hurt in a game against the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. Zetterberg missed 11 games with a back injury in December. Datsyuk missed a 10th straight game with a lower-body injury. Both he and Zetterberg are day-to-day. The Red Wings did get forward Johan Franzen back in the lineup after he missed 16 games with a concussion. Howard has been out with an injured left knee and he might play Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Flyers. Forward Joakim Andersson missed his sixth straight game with a lower-body injury, and is expected to return against the Flyers or Friday night against the Washington Capitals. Florida rookie forward Aleksander Barkov didn't play because of a lower-body injury sustained against the Buffalo Sabres last Tuesday.
Nashville @ Edmonton 1-5 - On the same day Wayne Gretzky was celebrating his 53rd birthday, Ryan Smyth scored his 125th power-play goal as a member of the Edmonton Oilers in a 5-1 win against the Nashville Predators on Sunday at Rexall Place. The goal pulled Smyth into a second-place tie with Gretzky for power-play goals with the franchise. Glenn Anderson still holds the Oilers record with 126 power-play goals. Goalie Ben Scrivens, acquired from the Los Angeles Kings on Jan. 15, made 34 saves to record his first win with Edmonton. Smyth was moved to center in the contest between Luke Gazdic and Jesse Joensuu on the Oilers' fourth line. His power-play goal came at 10:12 of the second period, banging a rebound past Predators goaltender Carter Hutton from the top of the crease. Hutton made 22 stops in the loss. Schultz opened the scoring 2:59 into the first period, taking a feed from Joensuu in front and lifting a shot over Hutton. Legwand tied the game at 15:25, breaking out on a 2-on-1 rush and snapping a shot past Scrivens. Eberle restored the lead at 19:48 converting a cross-ice feed from Hall and tapping it past Hutton. In the second, the Predators thought they had tied the game, but Taylor Beck was called for goaltender interference after bowling over Scrivens as the puck went into the net. It was the first of two Predators goals to be waived off. Yakupov made it 4-1 with his 10th goal of the season at 16:46. The Oilers left wing converted a Sam Gagner centering pass, firing it through Hutton. The Predators had a number of quality opportunities to cut into the deficit in the period on the power play, but were unable to beat Scrivens, making his third start for the Oilers since the trade. Craig Smith looked to have cut into the Oilers lead in the third period, converting off a scramble in front. However, Beck was again ruled to have interfered with Scrivens, lying on the Oilers goaltender as the puck was shot into the net. Nugent-Hopkins added a fifth-goal for the Oilers, converting on the power play at 15:32. Nugent-Hopkins took a cross-crease pass from Eberle and lifted a shot over Hutton.
