Pens, Yotes and Stars Trade Deadline Deals



The Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday acquired forward Marcel Goc from the Florida Panthers for two draft picks, according to multiple reports, including TSN. Goc is tied for fourth on the Panthers this season with 11 goals and has 23 points in 62 games. A first-round pick (No. 20) of the San Jose Sharks in the 2001 NHL Draft, the 30-year-old has 72 goals and 177 points in 550 games with the Sharks, Nashville Predators and Panthers. The Panthers reportedly will receive a third-round and fifth-round pick in exchange for Goc. The Calgary Flames announced today that they have acquired Pittsburgh’s third round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft in exchange for forward Lee Stempniak. The Calgary Flames have recalled Ben Hanowski from Abbotsford. He has played 51 games with the Heat this season netting 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points. Hanowski played five games with the Flames last season, recording his first NHL goal in his first NHL game.One day after acquiring Roberto Luongo, the Florida Panthers traded goaltender Tim Thomas to the Dallas Stars, TSN reported on Wednesday. Chris Johnston of Rogers Sportsnet reported the Stars sent goaltender Dan Ellis to the Panthers to complete the deal. Thomas was 16-20-3 with a .909 save percentage and 2.87 goals-against average this season for the Panthers. He did not play in 2012-13 but returned to the NHL on a one-year contract with Florida. After trading for Luongo from the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, Florida general manager Dale Tallon said he would speak to Thomas about what he wanted to do. Thomas has a no-movement clause in his contract. Ellis has one more year on his contract with an average annual value of $900,000. He is 5-6-0 in 14 appearances for the Stars with a .900 save percentage and a 3.04 GAA.

The Washington Capitals on Tuesday traded forwards Martin Erat and John Mitchell to the Phoenix Coyotes for forward Chris Brown, defenseman Rostislav Klesla and a fourth-round pick at the 2015 NHL Draft. The Capitals said Brown and Klesla will report to the Hershey Bears, the Capitals’ American Hockey League affiliate. Brown played in six games with the Coyotes this season. He had no points and 17 penalty minutes. The 23-year-old had 14 goals, 35 points and 68 penalty minutes in 51 games with the Portland Pirates of the AHL. He was the Coyotes' second-round pick (No. 36) in the 2009 NHL Draft. Klesla, a 14-year NHL veteran, had one goal and four points in 25 games with Phoenix this season. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound defenseman has 159 points in 659 NHL games; the 31-year-old played with the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2000-11, when he was traded to Phoenix. Erat, who scored a career-high 23 goals in 2007-08 among eight seasons with double-digit goal totals with the Nashville Predators, had two goals in 62 games with Washington during the past two seasons. He had one goal and 24 points in 53 games with Washington this season. The Capitals acquired the 32-year-old right wing along with forward Michael Latta from the Predators in a trade last April that sent forward Filip Forsberg to Nashville. Erat has 165 goals, 508 points and 452 penalty minutes in 785 NHL regular-season games with the Predators and the Capitals. Mitchell, 27, had six points (three goals) in 20 games with Hershey this season. Washington acquired forward Dustin Penner from the Anaheim Ducks earlier Tuesday in exchange for a fourth-round pick at the 2014 NHL Draft. The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defensemen David Rundblad and Mathieu Brisebois from the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday in exchange for the Blackhawks' second-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. Rundblad, 23, was the 17th player taken in the 2009 draft, by the St. Louis Blues. He made his NHL debut with the Ottawa Senators in 2011-12, playing 24 games before being traded to the Coyotes for forward Kyle Turris. Rundblad has one goal and nine points in 50 games over parts of three seasons for the Senators and Coyotes, including one assist in 12 games this season. Brisebois, 21, was signed by the Coyotes as an undrafted free agent after playing the past four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He has one goal and four points in 28 games for the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League this season. Brisebois had 17 and 19 goals, respectively, in his final two seasons for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the QMJHL. Rundblad will join the Blackhawks; Brisebois will report to the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago's affiliate in the American Hockey League.
