NHL Results - Sat, Dec 13, 2014

Ottawa @ Boston 3-2 SO - Bobby Ryan scored in the third round to give the Senators a 3-2 comeback victory. Rask stopped Ryan on a backhand with one minute left in overtime. Ryan beat Rask with a forehand in the shootout, which Ottawa won 2-1. David Legwand scored a game-tying power-play goal 4:17 into the third period. Forward Mika Zibanejad scored in the shootout and scored in regulation for the Senators. Goaltender Robin Lehner made 29 saves and stopped two out of three shots in the shootout in coach Dave Cameron’s first NHL win. Brad Marchand scored in the shootout for the Bruins, who lost for the first time this season in three shootouts. Rask made 29 saves, and forwards Loui Eriksson and Craig Cunningham scored but Boston lost for the seventh time in its past nine games. Cunningham scored his first NHL goal at 11:45 of the first period to give Boston 1-0 lead. During a penalty kill, Cunningham won a race to a clear by defenseman Zdeno Chara, and his slap shot from the top of the right circle went through Lehner’s five-hole. Lehner left his crease to play the puck and Marchand stole the pass. With Lehner out by the faceoff dot, Marchand attempted a shot at the empty net from the bottom of the circle but Erik Karlsson made the block. Zibanejad tied the score 1-1 for Ottawa with a shot from the right circle at 2:24 of the second period. He faked a slap shot and then beat Rask with a wrist shot a few strides later. The Bruins went ahead on a goal by Eriksson at 10:33. After Carl Soderberg and Kevan Miller cycled the puck in the right circle, Miller carried the puck to the bottom of the circle and passed to the front. Eriksson stopped the pass and then beat Lehner for a 2-1 lead. Ottawa tied the game 2-2 after Senators forward Mark Stone got hit in the left foot by teammate Kyle Turris’ shot from the point. The puck deflected to Legwand, who stuffed it in.
Carolina @ Philadelphia 1-5 - The Flyers were leading 2-1 early in the second when they scored three goals in a 5:11 span. Voracek started the run when he finished a tic-tac-toe passing play with Claude Giroux and Simmonds for a power-play goal at 4:54. Laughton took a pass from Brayden Schenn on the move on the right side of the Carolina zone. He cut to the net and shot the puck past Khudobin's blocker, off the left post and in at 7:29. Laughton has taken over as the second-line center between Schenn and Simmonds. Laughton also has seen time on the second power-play unit and on the penalty kill. Raffl capped Philadelphia's second-period when he knocked in the rebound of Giroux's shot off a give-and-go with Voracek at 10:05 to make it 5-1. The Hurricanes looked poised to get into the game early in the second period when Staal scored. He blew past Luke Schenn on the left side of the Philadelphia zone and scored on a wraparound at 2:06 of the second. Couturier stuffed the puck inside the left post from below the goal line 53 seconds into the game. Simmonds made it 2-0 when he stepped into a Brayden Schenn lead pass that bounced off the boards and fired a hard shot past Khudobin at 11:27.

Florida @ Buffalo 3-4 OT - Nikita Zadorov scored 29 seconds into overtime to give the Sabres a 4-3 win against the Panthers. Zadorov's first goal of the season came when he received a pass from Tyler Ennis and took a slap shot that beat Panthers goalie Al Montoya. The Sabres trailed 3-2 in the third period and lost defensemen Andrej Meszaros and Josh Gorges to injury but came back to win. Meszaros left the game at 11:35 of the second period after he took a puck in the face from Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad. Gorges left the game in the third period after he blocked a shot. It wasn't an easy night for Zadorov and his partner Rasmus Ristolainen; the young pair struggled in the second period. The Panthers tied the game 2-2 when Sean Bergenheim and Jimmy Hayes scored at 1:08 and 4:51. Bergenheim's goal came off a turnover by Ristolainen and a shot that deflected off Zadorov. Buffalo forward Brian Gionta made it 3-3 with his fourth goal of the season at 8:27 of the third period. Gionta was sent on a short breakaway with a pass from defenseman Tyler Myers and took a snap shot that beat Montoya to the blocker side. Jussi Jokinen gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead when he scored 57 seconds into the third. He was set up by Dave Bolland for a one-timer after he stole the puck from Sabres forward Torrey Mitchell. Bolland held the puck and passed across the zone to Jokinen, who took a slap shot that beat Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth. The Sabres built a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Cody Hodgson (2:06) and Marcus Foligno (13:05).

Detroit @ Toronto 1-4 - Bernier made a huge save at 11:37 of the first period on a shot by Darren Helm from the slot that appeared headed into the net. Lying on the ice, Bernier reached up to block the puck and keep the game scoreless. With Toronto's James van Riemsdyk off for holding, Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall opened the scoring with 4:33 left in the first. Kronwall's fifth goal came on a high slap shot from the blue line that Bernier could not see thanks to a well-timed screen by Helm. A minute later, van Riemsdyk scored his 12th goal with the Red Wings' Joakim Andersson in the penalty box for tripping. The left wing made a drop pass in the Red Wings zone before heading for the front of the net. Toronto right wing Phil Kessel drilled a snap shot at the goal that bounced off van Riemsdyk's leg and past Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek. Richard Panik gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead with 2:10 left in the second period when he was sent in alone by defenseman Korbinian Holzer and slipped a backhand shot through Mrazek's legs for his sixth goal. Morgan Rielly made it 3-1 at 1:42 of the third period when he broke into the Detroit zone on the left side and snapped a shot from the top of the faceoff circle to the far side of the net. It was his fourth goal. The Red Wings pulled Mrazek with 4:15 remaining for an extra skater, but the move backfired when Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri scored his eighth goal into the empty net to make it 4-1.
Chicago @ NY Islanders 2-3 - Kyle Okposo and Lubomir Visnovsky scored 51 seconds apart midway through the third period to give the Islanders a 3-2 victory. It looked like the Blackhawks were going to make it nine wins in a row when Patrick Kane scored 3:46 into the third period to give Chicago a 2-1 lead. But the Islanders picked up the tempo and tied the game at 10:10 when Okposo slammed the rebound of John Tavares' power-play shot from the right circle past goaltender Scott Darling. Okposo's goal came with Chicago forward Kris Versteeg in the penalty box for a high-sticking call. Before Okposo's tying goal could be announced, Visnovsky put the Islanders ahead at 11:01 when he cruised into the slot and picked the top corner past Darling's glove for his second goal of the season. Chicago dominated puck possession in a scoreless first period that saw Halak forced to make a big stop on Marian Hossa's wrist shot from the slot during an early power play and rob Brandon Saad on a breakaway at 11:45, after he stole the puck at New York's blue line. After more than 34 minutes of scoreless action, the Blackhawks took the lead on Carcillo's goal at 14:25, only to give it back six seconds later. Carcillo got credit for his fourth of the season when Halak stopped his wrist shot from the slot, only to have the puck pop into the air, flop into the crease and roll over the goal line.

But before the Blackhawks could enjoy their lead, it was gone. Chicago won the faceoff, but defenseman Duncan Keith's pass deep in his own zone went right to Clutterbuck, who made a quick deke and tucked the puck behind Darling for his fourth of the season to tie the game. New York was pressuring Chicago early in the third period until Saad threw the puck out of his zone to Kane, who was streaking through center. Kane fought off Visnovsky's check in the right circle and whipped a high backhand that went over the shoulder of Halak. Visnovsky more than made amends less than eight minutes later by getting the game-winner.

Tampa Bay @ Washington 2-4 - The Lightning seemingly took a 1-0 lead with 10:04 remaining in the period when Steven Stamkos scored into a wide-open net, but the goal was rescinded because Ryan Callahan made contact with Holtby during the play. Stamkos' waved-off goal would have been Tampa Bay's first shot of the game, which it didn't officially get until 15:00. Tampa Bay controlled the early portion of the second period, earning a full two minutes of 5-on-3 power-play time after Mike Green hooked Nikita Kucherov, and Alex Ovechkin received a roughing penalty after the whistle. Holtby made a stellar save on Callahan when he attempted to poke in the puck, reaching behind him and scooping it up with his stick inches from the goal line. With momentum after the successful penalty kill, the Capitals took a 1-0 lead at 10:33 on Backstrom's sixth goal of the season. He collected a loose puck and backhanded a shot from the slot past Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop. In the final minutes of the second period, Washington's first line rushed up ice, with Tom Wilson leaving a drop pass for Backstrom in the slot. Bishop stopped Backstrom's shot and Ovechkin's follow-up chance, but Backstrom deftly tucked the rebound into the goal at 18:40 with a quick backhand-forehand recovery as the puck trickled toward the outside of the right post. Backstrom completed the natural hat trick at 2:17 of the third period with a wrist shot. Johnson finished an impressive passing sequence by roofing a shot over Holtby's left shoulder to spoil his shutout at 15:46. Carle made it 3-2 at 17:29, beating Holtby with a deke from the top of the left circle. Fehr scored an empty-net goal from just inside the red line with 39 seconds remaining.

Anaheim @ Winnipeg 4-1 - Little gave the Jets a 1-0 lead after Anaheim center Ryan Kesler went off for interference. Little snapped his 12th goal past Andersen on a rising shot at 20 seconds into the power play at 11:28. Anaheim took advantage on a power play early in the second period. After Anthony Peluso's holding penalty gave the Sucks their third power play, they pressured Winnipeg inside the offensive zone for nearly the entire man advantage before Silfverberg's wrist shot snuck past Hutchinson for his fourth goal at 6:15. Getzlaf's 10th goal then gave Anaheim its first lead when he sent a wrist shot through traffic past Hutchinson 2:04 after Silfverberg's goal. Getzlaf has goals in back-to-back games. Miscommunication between Hutchinson and Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien set up Anaheim's next goal. After the Ducks dumped the puck into the Jets zone, Hutchinson misplayed moving the puck over to Byfuglien. The error allowed Getzlaf to grab the loose puck and feed it into the slot, where Thompson shoveled it past Hutchinson with 2:07 left in the second period for his third goal. From there, the Ducks clamped down on Winnipeg, something that they had struggled to do in their home-and-home series against Edmonton. With the Jets on a 6-on-4 power play after Maurice pulled Hutchinson, Cogliano finished off Winnipeg with an empty-net goal with 1:15 left.
Minnesota @ Phoenix 4-3 SO - Zach Parise tied the game in the third period with a power-play goal and scored one of two Wild goals in the shootout for a 4-3 win. Parise and Mikko Koivu scored in the shootout for the Wild, who responded to an animated challenge from Minnesota coach Mike Yeo before practice Friday to step up their play. The Wild played with five defensemen and 19 skaters after Jared Spurgeon felt ill in warm-ups. With Keith Ballard and Marco Scandella out, Minnesota had no options on the blue line. The top defense pair of Ryan Suter and Jonas Brodin played a combined 65:41. Parise banged home a rebound of a Pominville shot from the side of the net for his 11th goal to tie the game 3-3 with 5:53 to go in the third period. The Coyotes have lost a franchise record nine straight games at home (0-6-3). Joe Vitale took down Minnesota's Charlie Coyle in his own offensive zone 1:51 into play and the Wild scored 57 seconds later. Thomas Vanek set up Suter for a shot from the high slot, and Niederreiter deflected it down and under Dubnyk. The Coyotes needed 1:04 to get a power play of their own and tie the game. Koivu broke the stick of Zbynek Michalek with a slash and the Coyotes scored in 25 seconds. Boedker found Ekman-Larsson sneaking in from point with a cross-ice pass, and Ekman-Larsson's one-timer beat Backstrom's glove to the near post. Ekman-Larsson's sixth goal was his fourth on the power-play, one behind Antoine Vermette for the Coyotes lead. Phoenix took their first lead 1:40 into the second period when Ekman-Larsson's pass from the point found Vermette between the circles. Vermette's shot deflected off a body, changed direction, and Backstrom couldn't get enough of the puck with his blocker to keep it out. Vermette's eighth goal is one shy of Boedker's Coyotes lead. David Schlemko misplayed a Pominville pass in the neutral zone, slipped between his legs, and found Zucker at the Yotes blue line. He raced in on the breakaway and put a backhand over Dubnyk at 13:25 to tie the game 2-2. The Coyotes answered when Kyle Chipchura broke up a pass, pulled the puck off the wall and started a 3-on-1 break. He fed Korpikoski for shot that Backstrom stopped, but the rebound when back to Korpikoski, who put the second try up high for his third goal at 19:32. A Coyle penalty put the Coyotes on the power play with 8:29 left in the third period, but Martin Hanzal was called for goalie interference late in the advantage, leading to Parise's tying goal.
NY Rangers @ Vancouver 5-1 - The Rangers scored on three straight shots from odd-man rushes to jump out to a three-goal lead in the opening 6:46. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh opened the scoring with his first goal of the season on a 3-on-1 at 2:36, J.T. Miller doubled the lead on a 2-on-1 rush 43 seconds later and Mats Zuccarello finished off another 3-on-1 break three and a half minutes after that to make it 3-0. Zuccarello added a second goal and defenseman Marc Staal also scored for New York. Nick Bonino broke Lundqvist's shutout bid 4:20 into the third period and Ryan Miller made 18 saves, including a penalty shot by Martin St. Louis late in the second. The onslaught started after the Canucks' top line with Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin got caught in the offensive end after a really long shift and defenseman Ryan Stanton made an ill-advised pinch. New York's fourth line broke out the other way and Jesper Fast held the puck into the right faceoff circle before sending a pass to a streaking McDonagh for a backdoor tap in behind a stranded Miller. Vancouver surrendered a 4-on-1 rush 20 seconds later, but the Rangers failed to get a shot after missing a cross-crease pass. The Canucks gave up another odd-man rush on the next shift and Derek Stepan finished the 2-on-1 with a cross-ice pass to J.T. Miller, who had enough time to cut back across the crease, catching Ryan Miller sliding the other way for an empty net. A bad pinch by defenseman Kevin Bieksa set up another Rangers 3-on-1 over three minutes later. Rick Nash passed to Zuccarello after they crossed the blue line and he skated into the faceoff circle before beating Miller with a far-side wrist shot past the blocker. Staal made it 4-0 on a screen shot and Zuccarello added his second goal with 2:21 left in the second period after a nice passing play from Nash and Derick Brassard left him with a tap in behind Miller. The Rangers took advantage with 12 different players recording at least one point in a balanced attack. Zuccarello's two goals snapped a five-game drought and extended Nash's point streak to nine games and Brassard's to five. Nash has six goals and five assists during that stretch; Brassard has two goals and five assists.
