NHL - News

Winnipeg - The Jets announced Wednesday that the team has signed general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff to a contract extension. Cheveldayoff is entering his third season as GM of the club. He joined the team shortly after its relocation from Atlanta. In his first two seasons running the club, the Jets have gone 61-56-13. They have yet to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

NY Rangers - The Rangers announced Wednesday the release of veteran goalie Johan Hedberg from his professional tryout agreement. Hedberg had joined the Rangers in training camp Sept. 10 after incumbent backup Martin Biron was excused from the team to handle a personal matter. As the backup to Martin Brodeur in New Jersey last season, Hedberg, 40, went 6-10-3 with a 2.76 goals-against average. He was bought out of the final season of his contract after the team acquired Cory Schneider from the Vancouver Canucks. Hedberg's release leaves Biron and Cam Talbot competing to back up Henrik Lundqvist. Biron, 36, has been the Rangers’ No. 2 goalie the past three seasons. Splitting time with Talbot, Biron made his preseason debut Tuesday, stopping all six shots he faced in a 3-2 preseason win against the Philadelphia Flyers. Biron is in the final season of a two-year, $2.6 million contract. Also Wednesday, the Rangers assigned center Ryan Bourque, right wing Josh Nicholls, center Michael St. Croix, right wing Shawn O'Donnell and defenseman Brendon Nash to the Hartford Wolf Pack, the club's American Hockey League affiliate.

Detroit - Red Wings left wing Teemu Pulkkinen will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety at the League's New York office Thursday for a boarding incident during a preseason game against the Chicago Blackhawks Tuesday at United Center. Pulkkinen was offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing as required by provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for any suspension that can exceed five games. At 2:16 of the first period, Pulkkinen was assessed a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct for a hit on Chicago defenseman Michael Kostka. Kostka left the game and did not return. The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: boarding. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review. Chicago won the game, 2-0.
