NHL - News

St Louis - The Blues on Monday signed veteran forward Brenden Morrow to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not released, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported it to be valued at $1.5 million. Morrow was an unrestricted free agent after finishing last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He spent the first 12-plus seasons of his career with the Dallas Stars and was the captain from 2006 until he was traded to Pittsburgh in March. In St. Louis, Morrow will be reunited with his former coach and general manager from Dallas. Blues coach Ken Hitchcock was the coach in Dallas when Morrow broke into the NHL in 1999. They were together until Hitchcock was fired midway through the 2001-02 season. Armstrong was the general manager in Dallas from Jan. 25, 2002 through Nov. 13, 2007. Morrow had 25 points in 44 games combined between Dallas and Pittsburgh last season. He has 542 points in 850 career regular-season games and 46 points in 92 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

San Jose - Sharks forward Raffi Torres will be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks with what general manager Doug Wilson said Monday was an issues with the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The immediate plan is to wait until the swelling goes down to determine the extent of the damage and whether Torres needs surgery or rest. If surgery is required, Torres will be out between three and four months. Torres injured his right knee Friday in a second-period collision with Anaheim Ducks right wing Emerson Etem. He played 5:29 in the game, with two blocked shots, one hit and a shot on goal, in his first game since an illegal check to the head of Los Angeles Kings center Jarret Stoll in Game 1 of the 2013 Western Conference Semifinals. Torres was suspended for the remainder of the playoff series. Following the game Friday, Torres was seen leaving the locker room with his right knee bandaged and walking with a slight limp. Torres was expected to provide a physical presence on either Logan Couture's line with Patrick Marleau or at right wing with Joe Pavelski and Tommy Wingels. The Sharks re-signed Torres to a three-year, $6 million contract June 20. He was acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes for a third-round pick in the 2013 Draft on April 3. He had seven goals with 11 assists in 39 regular-season games with the Coyotes and Sharks last season.

"You have to put guys in position to play, and they go play," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "They have to play hard and play the way they are supposed (to). In 10 days from now, the real bullets start firing and you have to be prepared. No one wants to lose a player to injury in preseason, but there's really nothing you can do about it."

Toronto - The Maple Leafs have signed forward Mason Raymond to a one-year contract, according to report from Sportsnet's Chris Johnston. Raymond, with the Maple Leafs on a professional tryout, leads the team with four points in three preseason games. The 28-year-old had spent the past six with the Vancouver Canucks, who selected him in the second round (No. 51) of the 2005 NHL Draft. He had 10 goals and 22 points in 46 games last season and added one goal and two points in four Stanley Cup Playoff games. Raymond sports career totals of 80 goals and 178 points in 374 regular-season games and eight goals and 18 points in 55 postseason contests.

"Based on Mason's play in the preseason, we feel he fits in well with our group and will have a significant role on our team," GM Dave Nonis said. "We agreed to terms over the weekend and look forward to him making a strong contribution this season."
