Los Angeles Kings v Buffalo Sabres
Los Angeles @ Buffalo 2-3 SO - The Kings, playing the first game of a four-game road trip through New York and New Jersey, outshot the Sabres 45-17, but got only a first-period goal by Justin Williams and a tying goal by Dwight King with 3:34 left in regulation. Those were sandwiched around a pair of goals by Cody Hodgson, the second of which put the Sabres ahead 2-1 at 4:26 of the third. Hodgson's big game Tuesday came after his line with Moulson and Ennis was benched Friday against the Anaheim Ducks. L.A. jumped in front when Williams scored his seventh of the season 1:17 after the opening faceoff, beating Miller from the right circle. Buffalo tied it at 12:46 of the second period when Steve Ott's pass hit Hodgson's skate and deflected past Quick. The Sabres capitalized on their second power play of the night to take a 2-1 lead. With Williams in the penalty box for hooking, Hodgson batted home a loose puck for his team-high seventh goal of the season. But King fired a rebound past Miller to get the Kings even with just 3:34 remaining in the third. Rookie forward Tyler Toffoli earned an assist on the play, extending his point streak to four games. Moulson had a chance to put the Sabres ahead with 45 seconds left in regulation, but was unable to convert a pass from Ott with Quick out of position. A key factor for the Sabres in the win was the play of their penalty kill. The Kings went 0-for-5 on the power play, including a total of 1:54 of 4-on-3 play in overtime. Both Los Angeles goals in the Kings' 2-0 win against the Sabres last Thursday came on the power play.

Nashville @ NY Islanders 1-3 - The Predators, playing the sixth of a seven-game road trip, came to New York after back-to-back 5-0 losses to the Winnipeg Jets and New Jersey Devils. They trailed 3-0 before Patric Hornqvist ended Poulin's shutout bid with 5:30 left in regulation, snapping a streak of 13 unanswered goals and a scoring drought of 174:48. Nashville killed two penalties, but the Islanders capitalized on their third power-play chance. With David Legwand in the box for elbowing, Nielsen found Tavares all alone in the slot for a one-timer past rookie goaltender Marek Mazanec at 15:30. It was Tavares' eighth of the season and gave the Islanders their first lead since they were ahead of the Washington Capitals 1-0 early in the second period last Tuesday. Bouchard gave the Islanders a two-goal lead at 17:23 with a goal Mazanec would like to have back. Bouchard moved down to the bottom of the right circle and took a bad-angled shot that went between Mazanec and the post for his fourth goal of the season and second in as many games. Nashville pressed Poulin early in the second period but couldn't beat him, and the Islanders made it 3-0 at 7:07 on an unselfish play by Tavares. Brock Nelson's pass found the Islanders captain in the slot, but instead of shooting he drew the defense and goaltender to him before sliding a pass to Kyle Okposo for a one-timer from the left circle that Mazanec had no chance to stop. It was Okposo's sixth goal of the season, two more than he had in all of 2012-13. It was also Okposo's 20th point, which leads all American players this season. Hornqvist ended Poulin's bid for his first NHL shutout when he took a pass from Legwand and scored his sixth of the season.

New Jersey @ NY Rangers 3-2 - Dainius Zubrus scored late in the third period to break a tie, and Martin Brodeur made 33 saves when the New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. Defenseman Anton Volchenkov was lost with 6:21 remaining in the first period after diving for a loose puck as Mats Zuccarello sped down the left wing. Volchenkov did not return after leaving with a lower-body injury. Overtime appeared to be in the offing after the Rangers tied it late, but Travis Zajac and Zubrus broke in on a 2-on-1. Zubrus' initial backhand was blocked by Girardi, but Zubrus followed up on his forehand and beat Lundqvist to give the Devils the lead with 2:55 remaining. The goal was Zubrus' third of the season and his first in 10 games. The Devils opened the scoring 6:37 into the second period with the Rangers (9-9-0) called for a delayed penalty. Carter rushed toward the net on his off-wing and fed a backhand pass toward the crease that deflected off J.T. Miller's skate before trickling into the far corner of the net to give the Devils a 1-0 lead and Carter his first goal of the season. New York responded 18 seconds later. Zuccarello rushed behind the net before feeding Staal, whose slap shot beat Brodeur low for his second goal of the season and 100th career point. The goal snapped Brodeur's shutout streak at 192:26. Carter's go-ahead goal late in the second was almost a carbon copy of his game-opening score. After Adam Larsson launched the puck down the ice, Carter beat Carl Hagelin in a race and headed to the net. His backhand from the right wing beat Lundqvist between the legs to give the Devils a 2-1 lead with 47 seconds left in the period. It was Carter's first multigoal game since April 11, 2010, when he was a member of the Anaheim Ducks. The Rangers' power play earned two prime opportunities to tie the game in the third period when Jacob Josefson was called for covering the puck at 5:02, and Jagr was whistled for holding with 9:55 remaining. New York failed to score 5-on-4, and its power play, 6-for-24 in the seven previous games, finished 0-for-5 with five shots. Girardi scored his first goal of the season when his wrist shot from the point deflected to Brodeur's left and into the net to tie the game 2-2 with 6:42 to go. But the undermanned Devils found a way to overcome the momentum shift.

Columbus @ Washington 3-4 OT - Mikhail Grabovski tied the game with 1:45 left on his sixth goal of the season, and Ovechkin tied Alexander Steen of the St. Louis Blues and injured Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos for the League goal-scoring lead with his 14th when he put Marcus Johansson's rebound past Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky (30 saves). Shortly after Bobrovsky was penalized for shooting the puck over the glass, Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky broke a scoreless tie 7:50 into the second period with a shorthanded goal. Mark Letestu's wrist shot, blocked by Capitals defenseman Mike Green, ricocheted high off the glass and settled behind the net, where Dubinsky and Troy Brouwer went to retrieve the loose puck. Dubinsky won the ensuing battle, and with plenty of room to maneuver, he wrapped around the net uncontested and slid a backhanded shot past a sprawling Braden Holtby (24 saves) for his fifth goal of the season. Washington tied the game over six minutes later thanks to an impressive individual effort by Martin Erat. Despite being closely shaded by Dalton Prout as he drove to the net, Erat was able to chip a pass over to John Carlson, who had a wide-open net after Bobrovsky's attempt to smother the puck failed. Carlson's goal was his fourth in six games; he has four of the five goals by Washington defensemen on the team's current roster. Not to be outdone by Dubinsky's shorthanded goal, Joel Ward gave the Capitals their first lead of the game at 8:56 of the third period with a shorthanded goal of his own when he took advantage of a Bobrovsky miscue behind the net. With the goal, his ninth of the season, Ward surpassed his total from all of 2012-13. But Jared Boll's deflection of James Wisniewski's shot beat Holtby at 11:22, the 11th goal that the Capitals have allowed within 2:30 of scoring themselves this season, and Cam Atkinson raced in to score the go-ahead goal after Dubinsky's pass bounced over Green's stick.

Colorado @ Carolina 1-2 - The Hurricanes gave themselves a fighting chance against the Avalanche (14-3-0) by claiming an early lead. Carolina started the scoring with Jordan Staal's third goal of the season. Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov stopped Nathan Gerbe from close range but kicked the rebound to Staal, who shoveled a backhander into the net at 12:47. Patrick Dwyer earned an assist with a strong forecheck. Carolina needed 26 seconds in the second period to strike again. Gerbe collected a puck along the left-wing boards and sent a pass to Dwyer in the slot for his first of the season. The Avalanche got on the board shortly after the first minor penalty of the game. With Hurricanes forward Radek Dvorak off for hooking, Stastny tapped in a loose puck that came to rest on the goal line at 14:34, following Nathan MacKinnon's shot from the slot.

Tampa Bay @ Montreal 2-1 SO - Stamkos underwent surgery in Boston a few hours prior to puck drop to repair a broken tibia he sustained in a 3-0 loss to the Boston Bruins on Monday. He was hurt while backchecking to prevent Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton from getting to the front of the Tampa Bay net, showing the philosophical change Cooper has instilled in this Lightning team. It looked for a long time as if Ryan Malone's goal early in the first period would be enough for the Lightning. But the Canadiens came on in the third period and tied it with 4:38 left in regulation on a goal by Daniel Briere, playing his first game after missing 10 with a concussion. After a scoreless overtime, Filppula scored on a wrist shot in the first round of the tiebreaker. Bishop stopped Briere and denied Brendan Gallagher for the win. Stamkos' absence forced Cooper to move Brett Connolly to center on the first line between Alex Killorn and Martin St. Louis. On defense he was missing Sami Salo and Keith Aulie, both of whom were also injured in Boston on Monday. Cooper's players responded well, playing a near-perfect road game through two periods until Briere was credited with the tying goal when a Max Pacioretty shot banked in off his leg. That gave way to a goaltending duel between Bishop and Price, with both goaltenders executing game-saving stops over the final minutes. The Lightning had three straight power plays from the 16:27 mark of the third period through the overtime, including 15 seconds at 5-on-3 in overtime, but couldn't solve Price. Malone opened the scoring at 5:00 of the first when he tipped Eric Brewer's point shot past Price as he was falling after a cross-check by Montreal defenseman Douglas Murray for his third goal of the season.

Philadelphia @ Ottawa 5-0 - Brayden Schenn and Vincent Lecavalier each had a goal and an assist in the third period, and Matt Read scored in the first for the Flyers, who have won two in a row for the second time this season. Giroux, who scored his first goal of the season Saturday in a 4-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers, recorded his 300th career point on his linemate's first of the game 28 seconds into the second period. He also assisted on Voracek's second goal of the game, which came on the power play at 10:33 of the second to put the Flyers ahead 3-0. Ottawa almost ended Mason's shutout bid in the third period but had a goal waved off moments after Schenn scored Philadelphia's fifth goal on a power play at 13:32. Chris Neil's deflection of Joe Corvo's point shot was disallowed at 14:19 because the Senators right wing made contact with the puck above the level of the crossbar, a ruling that was confirmed by video review. Steve Downie returned to the Flyers' lineup after missing four games because of a concussion. He assisted on Read's goal, his fourth of the season, on a wraparound shot that beat Anderson inside the left post at 16:24 of the first. Scott Hartnell got his first assist in 39 games on Voracek's goal early in the second. Hartnell passed behind the net to Voracek, who came out front to stuff the puck inside the right post. Anderson robbed Giroux of a goal with a spectacular save in the closing seconds of the middle period. The Ottawa goaltender lunged to his right to make a backhand save on Giroux's shot from the left side, stopping the puck in midair with the paddle of his stick. Lecavalier made it 4-0 with his seventh goal at 7:57 of the third.

Winnipeg @ Detroit 3-2 SO - Devin Setoguchi and Andrew Ladd scored in the shootout and Ondrej Pavelec made 41 saves through regulation and overtime to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 3-2 victory at Joe Louis Arena. Pavel Datsyuk scored two power-play goals and Jimmy Howard made 19 saves for the Red Wings, but it wasn't enough to prevent a sixth straight loss on home ice (0-1-5). Detroit's past four games at Joe Louis Arena have gone past regulation. Bryan Little and Zach Bogosian scored in regulation for Winnipeg (9-9-2), which has won three in a row and four of its past five. The Jets are 4-1 in shootouts this season, including a 5-4 win against the San Jose Sharks on Sunday. Little gave the Jets a 1-0 lead 7:10 into the game. With the teams at even strength, Blake Wheeler carried the puck into the Red Wings' zone before sending a nifty cross-ice feed to Little, who one-timed it from the left circle past Howard. It was Little's team-leading 11th goal of the season. Detroit tied it at 14:44 on Datsyuk's eighth goal of the season. After Jets forward Mark Scheifele was penalized for hooking, Henrik Zetterberg sent a feed from the left circle across the slot to Datsyuk, who snapped a shot over Pavelec for a power-play goal. After a scoreless second period, Bogosian put Winnipeg back in front at 10:47 of the third. Bogosian, who had not scored a goal this season, was left alone in the slot where he took a nice feed from Olli Jokinen, then made a nifty move around Kyle Quincey before firing a wrist shot past Howard. But the lead was short-lived. Datsyuk tied it with his second power-play goal of the night at 13:11. Fifty seconds after Jets forward Evander Kane was whistled for high sticking, Datsyuk pounced on Johan Franzen's rebound, stuffing it past Pavelec and over the goal line to make it 2-2. Winnipeg was given a 4-on-3 power play in overtime after Red Wings defenseman Jakub Kindl was penalized for slashing Kane at 3:56. But the Jets were unable to convert and finished 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Anaheim @ Florida 2-3 - Brad Boyes snapped a 2-2 tie at 4:29 of the third period with his team-leading sixth goal of the season. He scored on a rebound in front of the net after Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen made a pad save on Scottie Upshall's shot from close range. Tim Thomas stopped all 24 shots he faced in the last two periods and made a spectacular leg save on a redirect by Emerson Etem with about two minutes left. Andrew Cogliano and Hampus Lindholm scored for the Ducks (15-4-1), who failed to establish the best 20-game start in franchise history. Last season's team started 15-3-2. Anaheim played without leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf, who missed a second consecutive game because of an upper-body injury. But the Ducks appeared in total control after taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. And it would have been 3-0 had Thomas not stopped Corey Perry, who came in with three goals and five assists in his previous five games, late in the period. All it took was 70 seconds in the second half of the second period for the Panthers to tie the game. Matthias got Florida on the board at 13:28 when he took a pass from Brian Campbell in the slot and fired a quick backhand through Andersen's legs. Upshall scored a fluky goal at 14:38 when his quick wrist shot from the point bounced off the stick of Ducks center Mathieu Perreault then off the shoulder of Lindholm before going over the shoulder of Andersen. Cogliano gave Anaheim a 1-0 lead 40 seconds in by scoring in a fourth consecutive game. He took a nice centering pass from Daniel Winnik and got Thomas to go down with a quick deke to his forehand before he flipped the puck over the goalie. Lindholm made it 2-0 at 14:26 of the first period with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that beat Thomas high to the glove side.

San Jose @ Calgary 3-2 OT - Brad Stuart's goal 1:13 in overtime gave the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 victory against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night after San Jose couldn't hold a two-goal lead through 40 minutes. Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau also scored for the Sharks (11-2-5), who ended a five-game losing streak in which they went past regulation four times. San Jose hadn't won since a 5-2 road victory against the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 27. After giving up two goals in 3:34 in the third to force overtime, Stuart drove to the net and was hit by Joe Thornton's shot, redirecting it past Berra for the win. A video review confirmed the goal. The Flames trailed 2-0 and had managed little offense against backup goaltender Alex Stalock until Justin Braun was called for interference 6:46 into the third period. Five seconds later, Kris Russell blasted a shot past Stalock to get the Flames back into the game and end Calgary's 0-for-30 drought on the power play. Mike Cammalleri tied the game 2-2 on Calgary's 11th shot of the night. After Thornton blocked Chris Butler's shot the rebound came to Cammalleri, who slid it under Stalock at 10:25. Couture gave the Sharks the lead 1:33 into the game when he picked up a loose puck and beat Berra from the left circle. San Jose added a second goal with 55.3 seconds remaining when Thornton won a draw after an interference penalty to Matt Stajan and got the puck to Joe Pavelski. He slid the puck to Marleau, who snapped a shot past Berra's blocker for his ninth of the season. Berra stopped all 11 shots he faced in the second period, including back-to-back saves on James Sheppard with seven minutes remaining. He also denied a Scott Hannan deflection from a few feet out with three minutes remaining before gobbling up shots from John McCarthy and Marleau on consecutive odd-man rushes to close out the period.
