NHL - New Arenas

The Calgary Flames announced this week their intention to move to a new location.

* The Flames want to build a hockey arena and events center, as well as a football stadium with a roof, on property west of downtown. Flames CEO Ken King introduced his plans to replace the 32-year-old Scotiabank Saddledome and 55-year-old McMahon Stadium on Tuesday.

* The complex reportedly would cost $890 million and would be paid from four sources, a $240 million community revitalization levy, a $250 million ticket tax, $200 million from the city to fund the 30,000-seat football stadium, and $200 million from the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, the Flames' ownership group.
* The proposed Flames arena would seat 19,000-20,000 for hockey, lacrosse and special events. The development, which is being called "CalgaryNEXT," is proposed for the community of Sunalta, nearby the Bow River.

"I'm so happy to share this vision. It's going to be a little different than people think," King told the Calgary Herald on his way into an event introducing the plans to season-ticket holders.


* The Flames Alberta Rivals, the Edmonton Oilers are to re-locate to a new, downtown facility at Rogers Place for the 2016-17 season. This will be their final season at Rexall Place, where they have played since 1974.






* Of course the New York Islanders are set to break ice at the Barclay Center in October having spent their entire existence at the Nassau Memorial Veterans Coliseum.
