NHL - St Louis Blues @ Chicago Blackhawks 2-4 - Sunday, February 26, 2017

The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-2 at United Center, winning their fourth straight game on a late goal by Artem Anisimov.
After getting a cross-ice pass from Artemi Panarin, Anisimov scored his 22nd goal to put the Blackhawks up 3-2 with 5:20 left. Scott Darling made three of his 30 saves following Anisimov's goal before Tanner Kero scored into an empty net at 19:57. The Blackhawks (39-18-5) improved to 9-1-0 in their past 10 games and have 83 points, one behind the Minnesota Wild for the top spot in the Central Division and Western Conference. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane scored Chicago's first two goals for a 2-0 lead in the first period, but St. Louis tied it 2-2 on goals by Magnus Paajarvi at 16:54 of the first and Alex Pietrangelo at 12:33 of the second. Jake Allen made 38 saves for the Blues (31-25-5), who lost their third straight game and remain four points behind the Nashville Predators for third in the Central. It was the first game following the break for St. Louis. The Blackhawks outshot the Blues 20-11 and led 2-1 after the first period. Toews made it 1-0 at 4:18 with his 16th goal of the season and ninth in the past 14 games to extend his point streak to six games (five goals, eight assists). Kane made it 2-0 on the power play at 11:44 with his ninth goal in the past 10 games and team-high 24th. Toews and defenseman Duncan Keith assisted. It was Keith's 500th NHL point. St. Louis made it 2-1 on Paajarvi's goal, which followed a Blackhawks turnover at their own blue line that created a 2-on-1 scoring chance. Pietrangelo's power-play goal tied the score.

* Panarin's pass slid past Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester and went straight to Anisimov's stick in the right faceoff circle. Anisimov quickly sent the puck inside the right post for the game-winner.
"I saw the puck all the way and it was easy to prepare for the next move … the shot," Anisimov said.
* Defenseman Brent Seabrook led the Blackhawks with five blocked shots. He also had three shots on goal and assisted on Kero's goal.
* Darling made a save against Paul Stastny to preserve a 3-2 lead with 1:34 left in the third period. Darling moved left to right and just got his skate on the shot.
* The Blackhawks recalled goalie Lars Johansson from Rockford of the American Hockey League to back up Darling. Johansson traveled all day from California, where the IceHogs were on a road trip. … Blackhawks forward Marcus Kruger only played 1:17 in the third period but coach Joel Quenneville said Kruger is healthy. … The Blackhawks won the season series against the Blues 3-2. … Toews tied Jeremy Roenick for eighth in Blackhawks history with his 267th NHL goal.
Blues Quotes
"We were right there. We fought our way back in the game and it's a tough one to swallow again. We've got to find ways to get even a point out of these games right now. They're so crucial." Allen said.
"We still had a great opportunity. We had a couple of chances but we just gave up too many tonight." Mike Yeo

Hawks Quotes
"It's really encouraging watching the team the last few weeks getting cohesion going at this point in the season. We're very confident in our team, and that's the way you want to be. You want to be excited to get going at this point in the season, leading into the playoffs and get that good feeling in the room. We're excited about the way we're playing."
"I do [yoga] all summer. It's nice. You've got to take care of your body, and it helps me utilize my frame in desperate situations and keeps me healthy too." said Darling
"Team's feeling good in here. We've got a lot of confidence. We still feel we can probably play better than we did tonight, but things are going well right now." Kane said.

NHL - Blues - Round Up - February 18-28, 2017

Blues @ Buffalo Sabres 2-3 - Saturday, February 18, 2017
Robin Lehner made 37 saves and Evander Kane and Nick Baptiste each had a goal and an assist to help the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 win against the Blues at KeyBank Center. Kane gave the Sabres a 2-1 lead with 8:02 left in the second period when he deflected a shot by Zach Bogosian, after a pass by Baptiste, past Blues goalie Jake Allen for his 20th goal of the season, and 19th at even strength. Kane has scored 20 goals three times in his career, including in back-to-back seasons with the Sabres. Buffalo (26-23-10) has won three straight games. St. Louis (31-23-5) had a six game win streak ended. Ryan O'Reilly made it 3-1 with a power-play goal with 32 seconds left in the second period. With Buffalo on a 5-on-3 man advantage, O'Reilly received a pass from Rasmus Ristolainen, who skated to the right faceoff circle and took a shot that beat Allen for his 13th goal. Ristolainen's assist was his 100th NHL point. Scottie Upshall made it 3-2 with a shorthanded breakaway goal with 4:57 left in the third period. Upshall deflected a pass by Jack Eichel and raced past Sabres defenseman Cody Franson and beat Lehner with a backhand shot for his sixth goal. Lehner made 16 of his 37 saves in the third period. Vladimir Tarasenko gave the Blues a 1-0 lead 1:31 into the first period on a delayed penalty call. Tarasenko came on as the extra skater and took a pass from Jaden Schwartz and put a shot past Lehner for his 28th goal. Baptiste made it 1-1 9:34 into the first period for his third goal. He was recalled from Rochester of the American Hockey League on Saturday and replaced Sam Reinhart who missed the game with an illness. Allen made 25 saves for St. Louis.

* Upshall's goal got the Blues to within one, and was the first shorthanded goal of the season for St. Louis.

"Obviously, we took too many penalties, but 5-on-4, we were doing a heck of a job. But you put the league's number 1 power play in a 5-on-3 and you make things pretty tough on yourself. But even then, we still had plenty of time. That was a tough goal for us to put them up a couple going into the third period, but we kept fighting. We generated some looks around the net. Their goalie stood real tall and we get back to work now." Mike Yeo
"[The win streak] was good, but it only means we can start a new one. Win this [next] one going into break." Colton Parayko said.
"We're playing one of the best hockey clubs in the NHL. They're going to have chances, they're going to have shots; it's a big hockey team over there. I think we played a [heck] of a game." Lehner said.
Florida Panthers @ Blues 2-1 - Monday, February 20, 2017
A long offensive zone cycle enabled the Florida Panthers to sweep a five-game road trip for the first time in their history. Vincent Trocheck scored with 4.6 seconds remaining to give the Panthers a 2-1 win against the Blues at Scottrade Center. Trocheck scored from the high slot with traffic in front on a shot Blues goalie Jake Allen never saw to give Florida (28-20-10) its eighth win in nine games. Jonathan Marchessault also scored for the Panthers, and James Reimer made 26 saves. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it's the latest the Panthers have ever scored a goal in regulation to win. The Panthers return home for a four-game homestand in third place in the Atlantic Division. They are tied with the Boston Bruins at 66 points apiece, but Florida has played one fewer game.
Kyle Brodziak scored, and Allen made 31 saves for St. Louis (31-24-5), which has lost back-to-back games and enters a five-day break. Allen lamented that the Blues failed to control the puck once in the game's final 41.3 seconds from the moment the Panthers won a faceoff in the Blues zone until Trocheck scored.
* Marchessault put a quick shot short side past Allen after Shattenkirk tried a quick reverse pass behind the net but didn't get much on it. Nick Bjugstad picked it off and quickly found his teammate in the low slot.
"It's terrible. Terrible finish. We needed a win tonight just to have positive momentum into the break. We had a chance, came [up] short."
"You've got to battle. You've got to get pucks put, pucks in. We had 30 seconds left to salvage a point in a game that we played not good. Those are huge points right now. Couldn't end up with two points and it slipped away." Allen said.
"I think we put ourselves in a position where we should have a bad taste in our mouth for a couple of days." Mike Yeo
"Yeah, it's tough but you shut your mind off, you prepare for a good long stretch to close the season. We're in a big fight for a playoff spot right now. We all realize what's at stake now and we're going to come back after the break with our best foot forward." Scottie Upshall

Edmonton Oilers @ Blues 2-1 - Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Cam Talbot made 25 saves, and Mark Letestu scored the game-winning goal for the Edmonton Oilers in a 2-1 victory against the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center. With the Oilers on a 5-on-3 power play for 1:35 after a Magnus Paajarvi slash and Colton Parayko delay of game, Letestu made it 2-1 with 15 seconds left in the two-man advantage and 41 seconds into the second period after Jake Allen made a sprawling save on Connor McDavid. It was the Blues' first game since trading Kevin Shattenkirk to the Washington Capitals. Milan Lucic also scored for the Oilers (34-22-8), who ended a season-long six-game road trip 3-3-0. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two assists. Paul Stastny scored for the Blues (31-26-5), who lost their season-high fourth in a row. Allen made 23 saves. Stastny put the Blues ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal at 11:07 of the first period. The Oilers tied it on Lucic's slap shot from the top of the left circle that hit the stick of Blues defenseman Joel Edmundson and deflected off Allen's glove 44 seconds later.

* McDavid stayed with the play after Allen made a sliding save and was able to slip a pass to Letestu near the left post for the easy tap-in.
"It's not good enough, obviously. We've lost, what, four in a row now? Gotta find a way to score some goals now. We gave up two tonight, Jake made some big saves, but we've got to find a way to get some ugly goals. We've got to find a way to get around the net, take more shots. It's been a theme. We've been getting a lot of good chances, but we've got to find a way to score some ugly ones." Alex Pietrangelo said.

"It's frustrating. We've got to dig deeper in the [offensive] zone. I think [the] D-men were doing a really good job to support us and keep pucks in. We didn't score any 5-on-5 goals tonight, so that wasn't good enough." David Perron

"One-goal games, not a lot of offense. That was a game that was there for us. We need to make a play, we need to find a way, whether it's a shot with the guy driving the net, we need to score one of those dirty goals in those situations. We need to find a way to make a play." Mike Yeo

NHL - Sharks Round Up - February 19-28, 2017

Boston Bruins @ Sharks 2-1 OT - Sunday, February 19, 2017
Tuukka Rask made 29 saves, and an angry dwarf named Brad Marchand scored on a breakaway at 2:36 of overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 2-1 win against the Sharks at SAP Center. Patrice Bergeron won a faceoff in Boston's end, and Torey Krug flipped a long lead pass to Marchand, who beat goalie Martin Jones from close range for his 25th goal. Ryan Spooner scored in the first period for the Bruins (30-23-6), who are 4-0-0 under coach Bruce Cassidy and in third place in the Atlantic Division. It was Boston's first game after a six-day break. NHL teams are a combined 4-12-4 in the first game after a five- or six-day break. Patrick Marleau scored in the second period for the Sharks (35-18-7), who played their final game before a five-day break and lead the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks by five points for first in the Pacific Division. Spooner put the Bruins ahead 1-0 at 11:05 of the first period when he collected a carom off the end boards and tucked the puck inside the right post. Jimmy Hayes had the primary assist for his 100th NHL point. The Sharks pulled even with 2:23 left in the second when Marleau scored at 4-on-4 after roughing penalties to San Jose's Brenden Dillon and Boston's Riley Nash at 17:05. Krug blocked Brent Burns' shot from above the right faceoff circle, but the puck deflected to Marleau in the left circle, and he snapped a shot into a wide-open net. Sharks center Joe Thornton remains two assists shy of 1,000 for his NHL career.

* Jones got caught above the crease when Hayes tracked down a blocked shot in the slot and sent a wrist shot that bounced off the boards to Spooner, who scored from close range before the Sharks could recover.
* Marchand used his speed to get behind Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Joe Pavelski in overtime, tracked down Krug's pass, and beat Jones on a backhand.
* Krug played his 300th NHL game. ... Marleau scored his 502nd NHL goal and moved into a tie with Joe Mullen for 43rd on the League's all-time list. ... Sharks forward Joonas Donskoi (upper body) missed his 12th straight game.
"We're in a good spot right now. It's about making sure our game is where it needs to be come playoff time. We can come back with a fresh mindset and with some energy for the stretch drive." said Jones
"We've got to take advantage of it, get our rest here, and come back and get back to work. It's a good time for a break. We're pretty happy with it." Patrick Marleau

Sharks @ Vancouver Canucks 4-1 - Saturday, February 25, 2017

Goaltender Martin Jones bought the San Jose Sharks enough time to find their game coming off a five-day break. Jones made the best of his 35 saves early, Patrick Marleau scored the go-ahead goal with 56 seconds left in the second period, and Mikkel Boedker and Logan Couture scored 2:49 apart in the third to help the Sharks to a 4-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Saturday. Tomas Hertl scored for the Sharks (36-18-7), who are five points ahead of the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks for first place in the Pacific Division. San Jose has won 10 straight games in Vancouver since its last loss on Jan. 21, 2012. Daniel Sedin scored, and Ryan Miller made 22 saves for the Canucks, who also were coming off their five-day break. Vancouver (26-29-6), which was missing five players because of the mumps, has three wins in its past 11 games and is nine points behind the St. Louis Blues for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference. Vancouver was missing defensemen Christopher Tanev, Nikita Tryamkin and Troy Stecher, and forwards Markus Granlund and Michael Chaput because of mumps or related symptoms, and defenseman Luca Sbisa left after the second period because of the flu. The Canucks have been quarantining players with mumps symptoms, but Desjardins said that isn't the case with Sbisa. Hertl gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 3:31 of the second period, but Sedin tied it 1-1 at 12:02. After Marleau made it 2-1 with 56 seconds left in the second period, Boedker scored his first goal in 20 games on a 2-on-1 at 11:31 of the third, and Couture scored on a power play at 14:20 to make it 4-1. Stecher was the only of the five players with a confirmed case of the mumps.

* Tierney made a pass from the blue line to defenseman David Schlemko cutting to the backdoor on Miller's right, and he passed it back through the crease to Marleau below the goal line on the other side. Marleau jammed it into an empty net before Miller could get back across.
* Sharks forward Joel Ward was hobbled when he blocked a shot on the Canucks' first power play, but he blocked another before it was over, and two more before the game ended, matching Schlemko for most in the game.
* A giveaway and a bad line change gave Ward a breakaway from the blue line. His deke trickled through Miller's legs and wide of the net, but Tierney centered back to Hertl in the crease for a tap-in into an open net.
* Sharks forward Joe Thornton remains two assists shy of becoming the 13th player in NHL history with 1,000. … Canucks defenseman Even McEneny, an undrafted free agent signed in 2012, made his NHL debut.
"For a short lineup, they played hard, they played fast, they gave us some issues, so hats off to them for the effort [on the Canucks, who were missing five players because of the mumps]."
"We knew it would be a little messy, and it was, and Jones thankfully was our best player and gave us a chance to get our legs under us, and as the game wore on, we got better and better. By the third, we were playing the way we can." Peter DeBoer said.
"It's something about the Vancouver air and the Canadian air. I always feel good when I play here."
"We are hungry to get points when we come here." said Chris Tierney.
"They said it's totally different symptoms." Desjardins said.
"Our line got better as the game went on, and the whole team got getter as the game went on. It's always nice to put it in when you have a big chance like that." Boedker said.

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Sharks 1-3 - Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Tomas Hertl scored the game-winning goal with 1:24 remaining, and the San Jose Sharks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 at SAP Center. Patrick Marleau dropped a pass to Hertl, who beat goaltender Frederik Andersen to the short side from the left faceoff circle to put San Jose ahead 2-1. Joe Pavelski scored into an empty net with 23 seconds left to make it 3-1. Joe Thornton got his 999th NHL assist on the goal. Brenden Dillon scored, and Martin Jones made 20 saves for the Sharks (37-18-7, 81 points), who lead the Edmonton Oilers by five points for first place in the Pacific Division. Auston Matthews scored, and Andersen made 34 saves for the Maple Leafs (28-21-13), who have lost three straight (0-1-2). Matthews gave Toronto a 1-0 lead at 6:41 of the second period when he scored on the power play. His 31 goals are tied for second in the NHL with fellow rookie Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets and Max Pacioretty of the Montreal Canadiens, three behind Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Dillon scored his second goal of the season at 12:17 of the second to tie the game 1-1. He took a cross-ice pass from Kevin Labanc and beat Andersen with a slap shot from above the right circle. Veteran center Brian Boyle made his Maple Leafs debut one day after being acquired in a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning. He played on the fourth line with Matt Martin and Josh Leivo, as well as on the penalty kill. He had one shot on goal, one hit and one blocked shot in 12:33 of ice time.

* Leivo sent a pass from the right circle to Matthews in the slot, and the rookie beat Jones with a shot to the right corner of the net. "It was a really nice play all around," Matthews said. "We kind of caught them on a change, and [William Nylander] just maneuvered around, and [Leivo] made an unbelievable pass to me. I just tried to get it off my stick as quick as possible."
* Marleau drew three Maple Leafs to him before sending the puck to Hertl in the left circle for the game-winner.
* During the game, the Sharks acquired forward Jannik Hansen in a trade from the Vancouver Canucks for forward Nikolay Goldobin and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. ... Maple Leafs forward Mitchell Marner returned to the lineup after missing five games with an upper-body injury. ... Toronto center Tyler Bozak returned to the lineup after missing one game because of an infected cut on his finger. ... Maple Leafs forward Matt Martin played his 500th NHL game.
"I wasn't sure if it was in, but Patty made a great play to hold the puck and free guys in the [offensive] zone." Hertl said.
"We had a good shift there. We were kind of buzzing down low. We were having the cycle game. I think we got them a little tired, and [Labanc] made a great play through the middle. I kind of got my head up, had a little bit of time, so I thought I'd try the slapper instead of the wrist shot, and I was fortunate to find a hole." Dillon said.
"We just stuck with it. I loved our first period. We were unfortunate to be out of that period without being up. We should have been up. Second period, I thought they pushed back a little, and I thought the third we put our foot back on the gas again and finally got rewarded." Peter DeBoer

Rec Hockey - Dave Webster Memorial Tournament, Dumfries - March 11-12, 2017

The Annual Dave Webster Memorial Tournament took place this weekend in Dumfries, with Rec hockey teams from Scotland and Northern England taking part.
The competition sees ten sides divided up into two separate groups with all the teams in Group A facing all the teams in Group B. Each team played three games on the Saturday and twice on Sunday, with the top two sides from each group advancing through to the semi-final stage.
Whitley Bay-based Newcastle Predators were in Group B, but had a disappointing opening day, losing to Altrincham Black Bears [2-0], Kingston Cobras [5-1] and newcomers Ayr Jets [1-0].
The Predators are used to competing in the Tournament, having been invited to take part over the last few years and defenseman Mark Bone, was full of praise for the quality of the opposition.
"This is the third time the Predators have attended the Dumfries Tournament  and the standard keeps on improving each year. Some of the top rec teams in the country are invited so it's always a tough weekend playing the likes of Kingston Cobras, Black Bears or Paisley Blackhawks." he said.
The Blue liner admitted it was tough at times against some of the teams but also hinted that his side didn't exactly get the rub of the green.
"Our first game was against Black Bears which we lost 2-0 to what was a well drilled team. We put every effort in and played some good positional hockey which continued into the second game, but we couldn't get the results to show for the it. We suffered a heavy defeat to Kingston Cobras losing 5-1. he said.
"The last game of the day was much closer against Ayr Jets who just pipped us for the win. Unfortunately forwards Stu Darby, Curt Elgie and Ian Russell had shots on goal but were unable to get the puck past the goalies." he added.
If the results were disappointing on Saturday, there was no disgrace in losing to two of the tournaments best sides. Kingston, were always going to provide tough opposition for the Predators and are one of the Whitley Bay Islanders main rivals for this year’s Summer Cup. The Humberside outfit were winners of the tournament last year and advanced to the final again on Sunday, where they lost to eventual winners Paisley.
The Predators first opponents Altrincham, were impressive during the group stages, winning four of their games and topping the standings. Their only loss coming against the hosts [2-1] After qualification was already assured. However, the Black Bears came unstuck in the semi-finals against the Paisley Blackhawks.
Day two didn’t get much easier for the Predators either, after losing to another of the Islanders Summer Cup opponents, the Grimsby Lightning [4-2].
Bone, conceded that the defense and both his team's goalies were put under a lot of pressure over the five games but had an even harder time dealing with the strict officials.
"The predators defence had a tough job to do holding off the teams for the two days. Both Netminders, Max Hadfield and Brent Hope, were forced into pulling off some good saves too." he said.
"But it was the referees  that got the better of us though, as they were calling any minor collision in what is a non checking tournament. They resorted to giving 10 minute misconduct penalties to anyone who questioned their calls, which is a bit unfair in a game that lasts only 25 minutes with a running clock." he added.
"This obviously had an impact on the man power on the ice which ultimately left us short. The last game on Sunday saw three Predators players ejected, with 5+game for nothing more than what would normally consist of a minor penalty or a quiet word to let the game flow."
The Tynesiders finished their fixtures with a 3-0 loss to the Edinburgh Knights, and despite losing all five games played, the weekend will prove to be vital for the experience gained and the fitness levels improved ahead of their Northern Rec Cup campaign next month, as they faced some very strong sides over the two days.
Bone agreed and felt it was great from a team bonding point of view.
"It was probably one of the best weekends the Predators have had as a team and we certainly came top of the table in having a good time. It was great for team bonding, although how we ended up back in Newcastle with less players than we started is anyones guess." he concluded.

The Edinburgh Lions were one of the sides in the same group as the Predators and they had a good weekend, winning three of their games.
The Lions lost their opening game to city rivals, Edinburgh Knights [2-1] who were Masters of Dumfries Tournament winners in 2013, but recovered to beat the Grimsby Lightning [1-0] and then split nine goals with the Ayr Jets in a 5-4 win.
Top Line forward Kelly Bertram felt the opening day went quite well for her side.
"First game was against our Edinburgh rivals the knights. We started off the game slowly and although we eventually picked up the pace, by then it was all too late and ended up on the losing end of a 2-1 scoreline." she said.
"Second game of the day was against Grimsby, it was a fairly even matched contest for the majority of the 25 minutes, until we managed a break in play to get the only goal and take the win 1-0." she added.
"Our last and final game of the day saw us face Ayr Jets. With them running a short bench there were a lot of tired legs out there and it meant we had an end to end game going back and forth. The scores went up equally until the last minute when a nice play from us meant we got a fifth goal to take the win. We headed to the hotel on a high, winning two out of three games played and it was looking good going into the next day." Bertram said.
On Sunday, the Lions got off to another slow starts and lost to eventual Group A winners Altrincham Black Bears [2-0] but they did end their schedule with another success in a nine goal thriller against the highly rated Kingston Cobras.
In the end the Lions finished third in Group B, meaning they just missed out on a semi-final place to eventual winners Paisley Blackhawks by a single point. While, they will be undoubtedly disappointed at missing out on progressing to the knock-out stages of the competition, the Lions will take a lot of positives from the weekend.

And Kelly, pictured above, agreed.
"Sunday morning saw us take on the Black Bears, who were a very organised team." she said.
"The game started even until Leith took a 5 plus game penalty, which meant that we were a player down for the remainder of the game, plus the start of the next one. We battled on hard but in the end, wasn't good enough to prevent a 2-0 loss." she added.
"Last game in the group stage was against the Kingston Cobras, winners of the tournament for the last few years. This was a must win game for the us, if we had any chance of making the semi finals." Kelly said
"It was a very evenly matched game for the majority of it, until 2 minutes to go when we fired home the fifth and final goal of the game to take the win. We can be proud too, finishing the group games as the only team to beat the Cobras." she said.
"In the end we missed out on a semi final spot by only one point, so theres lots of positives to take away from this weekend of hockey and we will be back again in Dumfries for the plate in April. As for my personal performance, being the only girl in the Lions team is sometimes tough but I just go out there and give it as good as I get it." Kelly Said.
"I felt I skated and gave it 110% the whole weekend. I had a couple of shots on goal, didn't manage any goals but I was on the forward line with Robertson and Leith who scored the only two goals in the first and second game on the Saturday morning." she said.
"All in all we had a great weekend, with both positives and negatives to take away from the tournament. Got to say thanks again to be demons for the invite and hopefully we will be back again next year." Kelly said.
Ayr Jets arrived as the only new side from last year’s edition, replacing the Durham Dragons, who opted to compete in the Barrel competition in Prague instead. After losing heavily to the host team, Dumfries, the Jets recovered to snatch a one-goal victory over the Predators and then just lost out in a nine goal thriller with the Edinburgh Lions. On Day two the Jets took a point from local rivals Irvine Flyers before ending their schedule with a 4-1 reverse to what was now an impressive looking Paisley Blackhawks.
The knockout stages saw Altrincham take on Paisley, while Kingston played the hosts. The Blackhawks who included, former Warriors player Stuart Lonsdale, beat Altrincham in a shoot-out, after their semi-final ended in a 2-2 draw. The Blackhawks path to the final was a slow one but they were a side that grew as the tournament moved along.
"We started pretty slow with a 1-1 draw against Kingston Cobras and got pumped off The Blackbears 3-0 so it didn't look good in the beginning." Lonsdale said.
With the top team from the round robin stage [Altrincham] now out of the tournament and the hosts Dumfries, eliminated by the Cobras, it meant Paisley had to face 2016 winners Kingston in the final.
The Glasgow-based side proved up to the task and skated off with a 2-1 win to claim the trophy.
"We got our game together and ended up into the semis where we got revenge on the Blackbears, beating them on penalty shots after a 2-2 draw then beat Kingston Cobras in the final 2-1." said Lonsdale.
"Not a bad turn around in the end. But today [Monday] my whole body is in pieces as a result, but worth it for the win." he added.
Since leaving the Whitley Warriors in 2002 to attend University in Edinburgh, Stuart 'Blonda' Lonsdale has kept his hand in with the gold old game. His first year North of the Border saw him turn out for the Edinburgh Capitals but he then decided to take a break from the sport for five years before resuming his career with Reccy side Edinburgh Stingers. In 2012 'Blonda' moved West to Glasgow and signed for the Paisley Blackhawks where he has been ever since and was delighted with the win last weekend.
"It's just nice to make it right through to the end [the Final]. It's still just playing for fun but obviously, winning is more fun than losing of course." he said.

With the Islanders having the weekend off, what will they have learned from this tournament?
Well having recently got the better of the Predators in a friendly game they would have seen how they took on both Grimsby Lightning and Kingston Cobras who they are set to face over the Summer months.
The Predators lost those games by nowhere near the kind of margin that they did to the Islanders. However, with all teams still trying to find form before the Summer Cup commences, it’s still early days as far as that is concerned.

Finnish Hockey - Weekly Round Up - March 08-12, 2017

SM liiga
Weekly Finnish Hockey round-up by Aatami Mäkinen.
Pelicans - Goals from Miska Siikonen and Roni Rukajarvi proved to be enough for Pelicans to see off high-flying TPS. The Turku-based side did pull a goal back towards the end of the second period through Eric Perrin, but it wasn’t enough.
Jani Lajunen gave Tappara the lead at 18:37, but goals from Morten Poulsen and Joonas Alanne looked to have turned the game in Pelicans favour. As so often has happened this season, the Tampere-based side produced another dramatic comeback. Henrik Haapala levelled at 49:32 and then Valtteri Kemilainen scored the winner 22 seconds into overtime.
Pelicans lost a seven goal thriller to the Oulu-based side Karpat on Saturday. That was despite taking the lead on two sepearte occasions during the encounter. John Albert had given the visitors the lead at 15:11 but Juha Leimu had made sure both sides went into the break on level terms. Morten Poulsen then gave the Lahti-based side their first lead of the game at 26:44 only for Shaun Heshka to tie the game. Marko Poyhonen gave the Pelicans the lead early into the final session, but Brock Trotter netted at 54:12 to send the game into overtime. With ten seconds left on the clock during the extra session, and both teams seemingly set for a shoot-out, Albert who had opened the scoring at the start of the game, ended the contest when he netted the winner.
Lukko - Lennart Petrell gave the capital city club the lead at 5:41, but four unanswered goals by Jesse Virtanen, Sami Lahteenmaki and a double from Aleksi Saarela turned the game in Lukko’s favour. Joe Finley pulled one back for HIFK but it wasn’t enough.
Jukurit arrived in Rauma two days later and quickly had the game under their control. First period goals from Antti Jaatinen, Henrik Koivisto and Jesper Piitulainen gave the visitors an unassailable lead. Janne Niskala pulled on back for Lukko, 39 seconds into the second period but Nestori Lahde responded for Jukurit. Aleksi Saarela pulled another one back for Lukko with just over three minutes left in the period to make it a two-goal game once again. Jesse Virtanen netted 1:16 into the final period to give the home side every chance of getting something from the game, but Jukurit did just enough to hold on.
Jerry D’Amigo gave the Tampere-based side the lead midway through the opening period, and it was an advantage they would hold for the next period and a half. Ville Vahalahti levelled 16 seconds into the final session but goals from Tapio Laakso and Juho Liuksiala, three minutes apart secured the win for Ilves. Aleksi Saarela did reduce the deficit with just a single second left on the clock, meaning it was too late to salvage the game.
SaiPa – Visiting KooKoo, raced into a seven goal lead against SaiPa in Lappeenranta. Ossi-Petteri Gronholm, Mikko Virtanen, Toni Hyvarinen [twice], Oscar Eklund,, Jarkko Immonen and Sami Tamminen getting the Kouvola-based side’s goals. Henry Karjalainen got the solo marker for SaiPa with under ten minutes remaining.
SaiPa’s woes continued against TPS on Saturday, but they at least made the team from Turku work for their win. Sebastian Sjoholm gave the home side the lead, and despite both Jasper Lindsten and Elmeri Eronen scoring for TPS to give them the lead, Lauri Piironen levelled for SaiPa. Their hard work looked to be paying off until the final 3 minutes or so, when Erik Thorell netted twice in under a minute to win the game for TPS.
JYP - JYP recovered from being a goal down after just 69 seconds to beat Jukurit in Mikkeli. Teemu Tallberg gave the hosts the lead but goals from Juha Uotila, Robert Rooba and Ossi Louhivaara turned the game around.
They then recovered from going two goals behind to KooKoo on Saturday to win a thrilling game. Ossi Louhivaara had given them the early lead, but goals from Robin Jacobsson, Jan-Mikael Juutilainen and Mikko Virtanen gave them a 3-1 lead by the 36th minute. Those last two goals came just 19 seconds apart as the team from Kouvola looked well in control. However, a final period fightback saw the home side win after Anssi Lofman and Antti Suomela scored 90 seconds apart to tie the game. Then Michel Miklik and Juha-Pekka Hytonen scored the goals which gave them the lead and the win.
Tappara – Had to battle against HPK in Hameenlinna on Saturday, for their latest victory. Martin Raymark gave them a first period lead only for Joonas Lehtivuori to level three minutes later. Teemu Nurmi and Otso Rantakari restored the league leaders advanatage but Shane O’Brien did pull one back for HPK with 14 seconds left in the middle period. They couldn’t force another goal to tie the game though so Tappara secured yet another win.
Elsewhere there were wins for Karpat, Ilves and KalPa on Tuesday, whilst the latter came unstuck the following night in Pori when they lost to Assat. TPS beat Karpat 3-2 in Oulu  on Thursday.
HIFK smashed six goals past Assat on Saturday with Roope Hintz bagging a hat trick and Mikael Johansson grabbing a brace. Lennart Petrell scored the other goal. KalPa secured a 4-2 win over Sport in the other game.
