NHL Results - Fri, Oct 17, 2014

Florida @ Buffalo 1-0 - Luongo made 26 saves, and Sean Bergenheim scored his first goal of the season to help the Panthers to a 1-0 victory, their first of the season. The shutout was the 67th of Luongo's NHL career, passing Patrick Roy to tie Roy Worters for 13th place on the all-time list. After a scoreless first period, when the Panthers outshot the Sabres 16-3, Bergenheim scored 3:01 into the second. He picked up a loose puck from Brad Boyes and snapped a wrist shot between the legs of Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth, who was screened by Sabres defenseman Mike Weber. The Panthers withstood a power-play threat from the Sabres when Gudbranson was called for hooking at 6:46 of the third period and forward Dave Bolland was called for high-sticking at 7:48. With 48 seconds of a 5-on-3, the Panthers killed the penalties. It was the first game between the top two picks of the 2014 NHL Draft: Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad (No. 1) and Sabres forward Sam Reinhart. It's the earliest in the season the top two picks have played since Oct. 11, 1997, when Joe Thornton of the Boston Bruins faced Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks. Bolland left with less than five minutes remaining in the third period with a lower-body injury. Gallant did not have an update following the game.

Calgary @ Columbus 2-3 - Bobrovsky lost his shutout three seconds after Calvert's charging penalty expired and before he could get back into the play, Curtis Glencross controlled a rebound and fed Raymond though the paint on the left side; he tapped it in for his fourth goal of the season. The Flames kept coming and Jooris, promoted Thursday from the Adirondack Flames of the AHL, took a pass in the neutral zone from Mark Giordano and got behind the defense. He shirked Columbus defenseman James Wisniewski before beating Bobrovsky to the glove side. The Blue Jackets made sure they didn't waste their strong start. Skille scored his second of the season at 2:59 of the first, and Johansen made it 2-0 at 5:21 with a power-play goal. For Skille, it was justification for his move to the third line from the fourth when rookie forward Mark Dano was forced to miss the game because of an undisclosed injury. Skille's new linemate, Mark Letestu, set him up with a backhanded shovel pass to the low slot that he quickly converted with a slap shot. Johansen got his third goal, while Giordano was serving a delay of game penalty for shooting the puck over the glass. Nick Foligno guarded the puck below the goal line before blindly throwing it out to Johansen low in the right circle for a shot past Ramo. Calvert made it 3-0 after Wisniewski fired from the right point. Ramo made the initial stop, but the puck sat in the crease. Letestu went for it, but at the last second Calvert was checked from behind and knocked the puck into the net as he fell.

Detroit @ Toronto 4-1 - The line of Zetterberg, Gustav Nyquist and Johan Franzen line produced three goals and eight points and continually kept the Maple Leafs at bay with their speed and precise passing. The Red Wings took advantage of a Maple Leafs miscue midway through the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Toronto defenseman Roman Polak was stripped of the puck behind his net by Zetterberg, who fired a crisp pass to Franzen situated at the other side of the goal. Franzen tipped it past goalie James Reimer at 10:00 for his first of the season. Zetterberg and Franzen teamed up again at 5:42 of the second period to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead. Zetterberg drove hard to the net with Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner in pursuit. Zetterberg went past the net but made a nifty back pass to Franzen, who snapped a shot past a diving Reimer. Zetterberg had a hand in Detroit's third goal at 18:16 of the second when he drove to the net, turned and spied Nyquist in the slot. Zetterberg made a perfect pass to Nyquist, who scored his fourth goal in four games on a low shot. Mike Santorelli gave Toronto hope when he split the Detroit defense, took a pass from linemate Leo Komarov, and drilled a backhand past goalie Jimmy Howard 21 seconds into the third period. It was Santorelli's first goal for the Maple Leafs after playing last season for the Vancouver Canucks. Justin Abdelkader restored Detroit's three-goal lead when he tipped a pass from Nyquist past Reimer at 5:51. Zetterberg drew the other assist. The Maple Leafs lost rookie right wing Brandon Kozun at 6:31 of the second period when he was hit awkwardly into the end boards and had to be helped off the ice. Kozun will undergo an MRI for his lower-body injury and will not accompany the team to Detroit. Left wing Daniel Winnik left the game in the third period with an upper-body injury.

Nashville @ Winnipeg 2-0 - Goaltender Pekka Rinne made 31 saves. It was his first shutout of the season and his third since he returned to action near the end of last season after missing 51 games because of a hip injury. Ribeiro, an offseason cast-off from the Coyotes, scored his second goal of the season when he deflected a long left-point shot by Seth Jones through Pavelec's pads at 16:20 of the first period. Ribeiro has a goal in back-to-back games. Rinne stopped Jim Slater's second-period shorthanded breakaway and denied several quality chances from Mark Scheifele, including a third-period save in-close. Neal, another offseason acquisition, scored his first goal with Nashville at 7:31 of the third period. Neil, who the Predators acquired in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins, took a pass at the bottom of the left circle and used a tip by Winnipeg defenseman Adam Pardy to lift a shot over Pavelec's right shoulder.

Vancouver @ Edmonton 2-0 - Radim Vrbata is proving to be the perfect fit for Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin on the Canucks' top line. Vrbata scored his third goal in as many games, and Ryan Miller made 28 saves. Vrbata, who signed with Vancouver as a free agent this offseason after playing the previous five seasons with the Coyotes, has five points in three games playing with the Sedin brothers. While his old time have struggled without him. Vrbata's second-period goal was his second game-winner of the season. He assisted on Daniel Sedin's empty-net goal with 15 seconds left in the game. The Canucks have won three straight to open the season, the first time Vancouver has done that since 1999. Vrbata put the Canucks up 1-0 at 15:49 of the second, taking a cross-crease pass from Daniel Sedin and firing a shot up over Scrivens. Henrik Sedin had taken the puck behind the net and dropped it to his brother, who swung out front and spotted Vrbata unattended at the far side of the net. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins came close to tying the game with a little more than seven minutes remaining in the third period, getting the puck in the slot on a 3-on-2 rush, but he fired his shot just wide.

Minnesota @ Anaheim 1-2 - Corey Perry tapped in the game-winner, his fifth goal, with 8:25 left in the third after Jason Zucker's pass bounced off Matt Dumba's skate as the Wild attempted to break out of their zone. Kuemper stopped Perry's initial shot, but Nate Thompson nudged the puck to the left side for Perry, who extended his season-opening point streak to five games. Andrew  Cogliano got the sellout crowd of 17,306 on its feet with his ninth career shorthanded goal. Defenseman Cam Fowler pushed the puck up the boards, and Cogliano, who grabbed it near the Minnesota bench, broke in on Kuemper and slipped a backhand past him at 4:02 of the third. Before Anaheim's third-period flurry, each team had prime chances in the second. Wild forward Thomas Vanek had the puck on his stick in the slot but was stopped by Andersen. On the ensuing trip down the ice, a rebound hopped over Cogliano's stick. Wild forward Jason Pominville then fanned on an open net from the right side. Andersen anchored Anaheim early, but he was beaten by Zucker's wrist shot at 2:08 of the second period. Zucker, who was born in nearby Newport Beach, streaked down the left side to put defenseman Clayton Stoner on his heels and zipped the puck glove side on Andersen for his first career goal against the Ducks.
