NHL Results - Tue, Oct 14, 2014

NY Islanders @ NY Rangers 6-3 - The Islanders scored five unanswered goals, including two in a span of 30 seconds early in the third period, in a 6-3 win against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Islanders, who trailed 2-1 3:50 into the second when Derick Brassard scored his second goal of the season, rallied behind a ferocious forecheck, smart play in the neutral zone and goaltending. Okposo took advantage of a turnover in the Rangers end and scored his first of the season and the 100th of his career, unassisted, to give the Islanders their first lead 48 seconds into the third. Nelson scored his fourth of the season at 4:50 to make it 4-2 before Grabovski's harmless looking wrist shot deflected off Rangers defenseman Kevin Klein and past Lundqvist at 5:20. Leddy scored on a slap shot that beat Lundqvist at 10:59. The Rangers outshot the Islanders 21-8 in the second but had Brassard's even-strength goal to show for it. Halak was the star of the second, making numerous stops to keep the Islanders within striking distance until Tavares scored from the slot to tie the game at 15:03. Josh Bailey set up the goal when he bumped Rangers defenseman Michael Kostka off the puck behind the net before Nikolay Kulemin collected it and fed Tavares in the slot for his second of the season. It marks the fourth time in their history that the Islanders have started a season with three straight victories; they won their first four games in 1976-77 and 2001-02 and their first three in 1987-88. Nash established a team record when he scored an unassisted goal 6:21 into the first. Nash is the first players in Rangers history to score at least one goal in each of the first four games of the season. The Islanders pulled even with a power-play goal at 10:31 when Boychuk fired a slap shot from the right point that beat Lundqvist to the long side with Nelson setting a screen in front.

Anaheim @ Philadelphia 4-3 SO - In his third NHL game, William Karlsson scored the deciding goal in the fourth round of the shootout to give the Sucks a 4-3 win. Karlsson started down the right side of the ice, cut toward the middle and snapped a wrist shot from the hash marks that beat Flyers goalie Steve Mason past his glove. Jakob Silfverberg also scored for the Sucks in the shootout, and goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped three of four Flyers shooters, in addition to making 39 saves in regulation and overtime in his third straight start. Claude Giroux scored the Flyers' only goal in the shootout. The Flyers forced overtime on Voracek's first goal of the season with 5:20 left in the third, at the end of a strong shift by the line of Giroux, Voracek and Michael Raffl. They had the Sucks pinned deep in their zone, and when the Sucks' Andrew Cogliano tried to clear the puck, Flyers defenseman Michael Del Zotto held it in at the point. He spun it deep for Voracek, who walked out from behind the Anaheim net to Andersen's right and beat him to the far side, over his glove.
The Ducks led 2-0 after one period, but the Flyers answered with two power-play goals late in the second. Anaheim stole back the momentum on Beleskey's goal with 16.7 seconds remaining in the period. Elevated to the top line after Patrick Maroon was injured in the second period, Beleskey has scored in three straight games. Beleskey carried the puck into the Philadelphia zone along the right side and dropped a pass for Ryan Getzlaf. The Anaheim captain lost the puck but regained it along the wall. He spun away from Flyers forward Matt Read and spotted Beleskey cutting to the net behind the Flyers' Nick Schultz and Sean Couturier, who collided, leaving a lane for Getzlaf to thread a pass. Beleskey made one deke and lifted the puck over lunging Mason. The Flyers had worked hard to tie the game in the second. They took advantage of three Anaheim penalties, including a 5-on-3 power play that led to Streit's goal at 12:43 of the second. Anaheim opened the scoring on Jackman's goal at 12:20 of the first, then doubled their lead on Smith-Pelly's power-play goal at 16:53. The Flyers are winless in their first four games for the fourth time in franchise history. The longest the Flyers have gone into a season without a win is six games, and that's happened twice, in 1999-2000, when they started 0-5-1 before recovering to advance to the Eastern Conference Final, and in 2008-09, when they started 0-3-3.

Buffalo @ Carolina 4-3 SO - The Sabres squandered a two-goal lead in the third period, but Zemgus Girgensons scored in the eighth round of the shootout to lift Buffalo to a 4-3 win. Sabres goaltender Jhonas Enroth won a duel with Carolina goaltender Cam Ward in the shootout. Chris Terry's second-round shot eluded Enroth, who was sharp all night, tracking pucks well through traffic. The Sabres scored first when Foligno finished a 2-on-1 at 12:07 of the first period. Chris Stewart took a pass from Tyson Strachan through the neutral zone, then waited patiently to set up Foligno in the left circle. Four Hurricanes were caught up ice, allowing Stewart to feed Foligno. Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera was injured on the play, going hard into the end boards in pursuit of Foligno. The Hurricanes struck for the tying goal 30 seconds into the second period. Enroth stopped Jay Harrison's bad-angle shot, but Riley Nash pounced on the rebound in the slot. Buffalo regained the lead less than two minutes later on a Torrey Mitchell slap shot. After Hurricanes forward Patrick Brown turned the puck over at the blue line, Brian Gionta quickly moved the puck to Mitchell, who beat Ward with a shot to the far post. The Sabres extended the lead to 3-1 at 2:54 of the third period on Foligno's second of the game. After a Carolina turnover in the neutral zone, Foligno picked up a pass from Cody Hodgson, cut to the slot and fired a shot inside the left post. The Hurricanes pushed hard in the latter half of the third period. Zach Boychuk set up Terry for his second of the season at 12:11 to make it 3-2. Terry then returned the favor at 18:12, feeding Boychuk, who had been recalled a day earlier from the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL.

Colorado @ Toronto 2-3 OT - Phil Kessel's goal 34 seconds into overtime lifted the Leafs to a 3-2 win. With the game on the line, Kessel wanted the puck, and Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak made sure to get it to him early in overtime. Bozak spotted Kessel breaking into the Colorado zone on his off wing, and the right-shooting Kessel accepted the pass and broke to the net. The puck rolled off Kessel's stick, but he retrieved it, worked his way into the slot around Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie and swept a shot along the ice past goalie Semyon Varlamov. Toronto's top line of Kessel, Bozak and James van Riemsdyk got things rolling with a goal at 9:54 of the first period. Kessel fed van Riemsdyk in tight, and the big left wing snapped a high shot past Varlamov for his second goal. With Toronto muffing on a handful of clearing opportunities, Colorado eventually took advantage to tie the score. Ryan O'Reilly set up behind the Maple Leafs net and spotted Iginla in front. Iginla's shot was stopped, but O'Reilly stepped to the side of the net, corralled the rebound and beat Reimer for his first goal of the season at 13:14 of the first period. The Maple Leafs outshot the Avalanche 16-7 in the second period, but it was Colorado taking the 2-1 lead when Iginla set up Matt Duchene in the high slot. Duchene drilled a shot that hit the crossbar and went in for his first goal of the season. Duchene missed a chance to put the Avalanche up by two goals early in the third period when he intercepted a pass by Maple Leafs defenseman Stephane Robidas and broke in alone from center ice. Robidas recovered to get a stick on Duchene, but the Colorado center got a shot off that Reimer stopped. Colorado defenseman Brad Stuart's clearing attempt midway through the period was intercepted by Toronto's Joffrey Lupul, who drilled a shot between Varlamov's legs to tie the game at 10:36. On the next shift, Lupul was set up in front, but Varlamov stopped his hard shot. A minute later, Kessel broke in alone, but Varlamov again made the save. The Colorado goalie stopped 37 shots.

New Jersey @ Tampa Bay 2-1 - Mike Cammalleri scored his fourth goal of the season, with 8:41 remaining in the game. Lightning goalie Evgeni Nabokov stopped a Patrik Elias shot in front of the net but failed to cover the loose puck, allowing Cammalleri to score off the rebound. The Lightning tied the game 1-1, 8:59 into the third period when Alex Killorn scored his first goal of the season off an opportunity generated when Tyler Johnson split Bryce Salvador and Dainius Zubrus to provide the open look for Killorn. At 3:29, Nikita Kucherov thought he scored and raised his arms in celebration when his wraparound appeared to go past Schneider's pad. A video replay ruled the puck did not completely cross the line. From there the Devils appeared to get back on track defensively and slowed down the game. The Lightning's best chance to score may have come on a power play to start the second period, but shots by Steven Stamkos and Ondrej Palat hit the post. The Devils took a 1-0 lead 7:38 into in the second period when Travis Zajac scored on a second-chance shot after his first bounced off Nabokov's glove.

Calgary @ Nashville 3-2 SO - Filip Forsberg continued his strong start to the season by getting the scoring started for the Predators. Derek Roy made a play to create space and then fired a pass Forsberg was able to one-time past Calgary goalie Karri Ramo at 8:46 of the first period.
Calgary tied the game when TJ Brodie sent a pass that hit Predators defenseman Anton Volchenkov's skate and redirected into the net past goaltender Pekka Rinne at 10:01. Giordano scored on the power play, his first goal of the season, with 14:41 remaining in the second period to put the Flames up 2-1. Nashville forward Colin Wilson took an offensive-zone interference penalty that gave Calgary the power play. Later in the period, Mike Ribeiro scored his first goal with the Predators to tie the game 2-2 at 15:10. A shot by Craig Smith made its way through traffic to Ribeiro, who was able to put it in a wide-open net. Ramo made two big saves in the third period to keep the game tied, including an acrobatic stop on a 2-on-1 rush by Forsberg and Smith. Calgary put pressure on Nashville's forwards throughout the game and was able to prevent the Predators from getting a lot of high quality scoring chances. The Flames did a good job of getting pucks behind Nashville's defense to set up offense. Joe Colborne scored on Calgary's first attempt in the shootout. Ramo, who made 19 saves through regulation and overtime, made three more stops in the shootout to earn his second win of the season and improve Calgary's record to 2-2-0.

Edmonton @ Los Angeles 1-6 - Nicknamed "That 70s Line" last season because of their jersey numbers, Toffoli, Carter and Pearson have scored nine of the Kings' 12 goals this season, and all three netted again against the hapless Oilers. Dustin Brown and Justin Williams also scored as the Kings overwhelmed their opponents. Edmonton lost forwards Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle before the game with injuries and Viktor Fasth followed late in the first period. The disparity between these teams led to three goals in the first period and a lot of offensive zone time by the Kings, who could be without Gaborik a little longer after he aggravated a muscle injury from preseason. Toffoli had a highlight-reel shorthanded goal at 9:49 of the first when he dangled past defenseman Brad Hunt moving right to left before he fired a wrist shot over Fasth's right shoulder. Pearson was in the penalty box and couldn't see the goal he managed to see a replay. Williams snapped a wrist shot past Fasth at 4:21 to finish a quick breakout, and Carter one-timed Toffoli's pass at 3:06 after Pearson got the puck from Nail Yakupov. Edmonton spoiled the shutout on Hendricks' goal with 21 seconds left. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick was trying to tie Rogie Vachon for the team record of 32 career shutouts. Before the game, the Kings placed right wing Trevor Lewis on injured reserve, retroactive to Oct.8. Kings center Andy Andreoff made his NHL debut and smiled when he went to the penalty box after he fought Hendricks on his first shift. Darryl Sutter became the fastest Kings coach to reach 100 wins and Dean Lombardi became the first Kings general manager to 300 wins. Sutter reached the milestone in his 183rd game; former Kings coach Terry Murray got his 100th win in his 197th game.
