NHL Results - Fri, Oct 24, 2014

Tampa Bay @ Winnipeg 4-2 - Lightning captain Steven Stamkos scored his team-leading sixth goal in the first period, and Vladislav Namestnikov and Ondrej Palat joined Drouin in scoring a second-period goal. Nikita Kucherov had three assists and Tyler Johnson two for Tampa Bay. Victor Hedman, Ryan Callahan and Alex Killorn were all out injured. J.T. Brown (upper body) and Brett Connolly (lower body) exited with injuries Friday, leaving the Lightning with 10 forwards to finish the game. Lightning coach Jon Cooper said he does not expect Brown or Connolly to play Saturday in Minnesota. Bryan Little's second-period goal snapped the Jets' season-opening 0-for-22 slump on the power play. Blake Wheeler scored a third-period goal, and Toby Enstrom had two assists. The Jets end their five-game homestand Sunday against the Colorado Avalanche before beginning a stretch of nine of 11 games on the road. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 14 of 18 shots that he faced in two periods. Michael Hutchinson made nine saves for the Jets in the third period. The Lightning’s top line of Stamkos, Drouin and Valtteri Filppula combined for a 1-0 lead 4:41 into the game. Stamkos finished off a 2-on-1 rush when he slammed home a backhand pass from Drouin.
Drouin made it 2-0 when he took Kucherov's behind-the-net pass and drilled a one-timer past Pavelec at 4:45 of the second period. Enstrom set up Little's fourth goal 48 seconds later, pulling the Jets to within a goal. Tampa Bay's sixth-ranked power play, which had gone two games without a goal, moved the Lightning lead back to two goals when Namestnikov tipped Palat's right-circle shot past Pavelec at 12:52 of the second period. Winnipeg was 26-for-28 on the penalty kill this season before Namestnikov's goal, his second. Palat finished off a 2-on-1 rush, taking Johnson's lead pass and beating Pavelec with 1:58 left in the second period for his third goal. Wheeler's goal with 9:41 left in the third made it 4-2. At 5.05 of the Second period Radko Gudas high-sticked Dustin Byfuglien which provoked a fight.
Vancouver @ Colorado 3-7 - Matt Duchene had a goal and two assists, Jarome Iginla scored his first two goals for Colorado, and Tyson Barrie had three assists. The Avalanche took leads in their four previous games but couldn't build on them, which is why it was so important when Daniel Briere and Duchene scored 3:50 apart early in the third period to build a 5-2 advantage. Colorado scored four times in the third period to support goalie Semyon Varlamov, who had 26 saves for his first win in four decisions. He was returning after missing three games with a groin injury. Iginla scored his first goal of the game and 561st of his NHL career at 14:28 of the first period to move past Guy Lafleur into a tie with Mike Modano for 23rd place on the all-time list. He passed Modano with 43.3 seconds remaining in the game with a deflection of a shot by Alex Tanguay. Daniel Sedin drew the Canucks within 5-3 at 10:09 of the third period, but the Avalanche responded at 12:56 when Gabriel Landeskog beat Lack to the short side with a shot from the left point. Jamie McGinn and Erik Johnson scored for Colorado in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. McGinn tied the game 2-2 at 6:06 by driving to the net to convert a pass from Duchene, who carried the puck along the right-wing boards, moved to the left of Lack and slipped the puck by defenseman Christopher Tanev. Johnson scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 8:48 with Vancouver's Nick Bonino (high sticking) and Shawn Matthias (hooking) in the penalty box. Barrie passed to Johnson, who shot the puck from the high slot past Lack, who was screened on the play. The Canucks, who defeated the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, took a 2-1 lead in the first period on goals by Henrik Sedin, who scored 10 seconds into the game, and Alexandre Burrows, who broke a 1-1 tie at 17:23. The Avalanche have been plagued by turnovers on a nightly basis, a trend that continued when Johnson tried to send the puck around the boards. Daniel Sedin intercepted and fed Henrik Sedin in the slot for a quick shot past Varlamov. Burrows scored at the edge of the crease after taking a pass from Bonino. The puck went under Varlamov and into the net off his right skate. The goal was waved off but was ruled to be a good goal after a video review. Cody McLeod became the first player in Avalanche history and the sixth in Quebec/Colorado history to reach 1,000 career penalty minutes (he has 1,004 in 475 games) when he fought Derek Dorsett at 9:25 of the first period. They fought again at 6:35 of the third period after Dorsett boarded Daniel Briere.
Carolina @ Edmonton 3-6 - Leon Draisaitl skated the length of the ice and jumped into the arms of Oilers defenseman Andrew Ference after scoring, slamming the captain onto the ice. Draisaitl, who turns 19 on Monday, scored at 12:55 of the third period after the Hurricanes had battled back from a one-goal deficit on three occasions. Eberle scored his first goal to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 9:44 of the second period. He knocked down Harrison's clearing pass, gave the puck to Taylor Hall and headed to the net. Hall was able to lift a pass over to Eberle, who snapped it past Khudobin. Nash tied the game at 15:08, redirecting a point shot from Justin Faulk past Scrivens. Joensuu restored the Oilers lead at 16:46, knocking a rebound past Khudobin after the Hurricanes goaltender had stopped a shot from defenseman Nikita Nikitin. Skinner scored his first goal of the season at 17:58 to tie the game 2-2. He gained the blue line, cut to the middle of the ice and took a shot that beat Scrivens, who appeared to be screened by Oilers defenseman Mark Fayne. Eberle scored his second goal at 4:26 to put Edmonton ahead by a goal for a third time. He knocked the puck off Hurricanes defenseman Brett Bellemore, picked it up at the right faceoff circle and snapped a shot past Khudobin. Harrison tied the game 3-3 at 7:50 on a long shot from the point following a scramble in front of Scrivens. Draisaitl put the Oilers up for good a little more than five minutes later. He took a cross-ice pass from Perron then lifted a backhand over Khudobin after the Carolina goalie had stopped his initial shot. Nugent-Hopkins scored to make it 5-3 at 15:50 of the third off a scramble in front. It was Nugent-Hopkins' third goal in three games. Hendricks scored an empty-net goal at 18:33 after Hurricanes coach Bill Peters had pulled Khudobin in favor of an extra attacker.
Columbus @ Anaheim 1-4 - Columbus did not have a good start or ending because right wing Cam Atkinson left in the third period when Ryan Kesler's skate accidentally struck him in the face. Perry scored 88 seconds into the game after David Savard took a tripping penalty on Jakob Silfverberg. Sami Vatanen executed a slick shot-pass to a cutting Perry, who backhanded it around Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Perry became the fastest player in Anaheim history to nine goals. He leads the NHL with four power-play goals and is tied with linemate Ryan Getzlaf, who had a goal and an assist, for the lead with 12 points. Vatanen and Perry made it 2-0 with another power-play goal, a slap shot from Vatanen with Perry screening Bobrovsky at 8:37 of the first period. Anaheim, ranked 22nd on the power play last season, is 8-for-31.
Devante Smith-Pelly gave Anaheim a 3-1 lead with a deft redirect of Perry's pass that trickled five-hole on Bobrovsky at 13:06 of the second period. The Blue Jackets never mounted a push; center Ryan Johansen had one shot on goal. Columbus pulled to 2-1 at 14:00 of the first period when Hartnell's shot bounced off Ducks defenseman Hampus Lindholm into the net. It was the first power-play goal the Ducks have allowed at home this season. At 18:17 of the third period Jared Boll and Clayton Stoner were assessed fighting majors.
