NHL - Jets - Round Up December 15-22, 2016

Florida Panthers @ Jets 3-4 SO - Thursday, December 15, 2016

Bryan Little and Mathieu Perreault scored in the shootout, and Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves to give the Winnipeg Jets a 4-3 win against the Florida Panthers at MTS Centre. Perreault went from his backhand to his forehand several times before beating goalie Roberto Luongo with a wrist shot in the sixth round for the deciding goal, ending the Jets' four-game losing streak.
The Jets trailed 3-2 entering the third period, but Little scored at 2:36 to tie it.
Dustin Byfuglien had a goal and an assist for the Jets (14-16-3), and Adam Lowry scored. Aleksander Barkov, Smith and Vincent Trocheck scored on the power play in the second period for the Panthers (13-13-5). Jets defenseman Toby Enstrom took all three minor penalties. Luongo allowed three goals on 32 shots. He is one win shy of tying Terry Sawchuk (447) for fifth in NHL history.
Jaromir Jagr got the second assist on Barkov's goal and is three points behind Mark Messier (1,887) for second place on the NHL all-time scoring list. Wayne Gretzky is first with 2,857. Byfuglien made it 1-0 with 11 seconds left in the first period. Patrik Laine found Byfuglien with a cross-ice pass, and he put a wrist shot past Luongo. Barkov scored to tie the game 1-1 at 4:51 of the second period. It was his fourth goal in his past six games. Smith scored to make it 2-1 at 8:36 with his first goal in 11 games. Lowry's second attempt on a rebound got past Luongo at 10:11 to make it 2-2, but Trocheck scored at 11:58 to make it 3-2, tapping in his second goal in three games after a 17-game drought.

* Perreault put a low shot past Luongo on his blocker side for the shootout winner.
* Ehlers had six shots on goal and created several other scoring chances.
"You want it to go in," he said. "When you're getting a lot of pretty big chances … it's like you think to yourself, 'What's going on?'"
* Panthers forward Jonathan Marchessault was injured in the pregame skate and did not play. … Bjugstad's assist on Barkov's goal was his first point in 12 games this season. … Perreault's assist on Byfuglien's goal was his 200th point in the NHL.

"We kind of came into this one anticipating it was going to be a little bit ugly. We didn't think we'd just come in after a couple days off and be right back on top of our game. It wasn't pretty by any means. But at the same time you're going to need wins like that in this league. It was a good sign there in the third period, to gut it out, get it into overtime and get the two (points)." Blake Wheeler
"A bunch [of players] were trying to go high glove and it just wasn't there. So as a lefty, a bunch of the other guys are righties … coming down as a lefty, sometimes low blocker is an option, and it was there for me, so I took it." Perreault said.
"I'm just happy the guys fought back and got a win here. It's tough. You never want to sit in the box. You never want to see when you're in there you get scored upon." Enstrom said.

Colorado Avalanche @ Jets 1-4 - Sunday, December 18, 2016

Patrik Laine had a goal and two assists, and Blake Wheeler and Nikolaj Ehlers scored 1:09 apart in the third period to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 at MTS Centre. Wheeler scored his ninth of the season at 2:54 when he jumped up in the play to create an odd-man rush to give the Jets a 2-0 lead. Ehlers scored his sixth and second in 19 games at 4:03 to make it 3-0 when his wrist shot beat Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard high glove side.
Mark Scheifele had two assists and Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves for the Jets (15-16-3). Laine leads all rookies with 29 points (18 goals, 11 assists).
Jarome Iginla scored for the Avalanche (11-8-1). Pickard allowed three goals on 30 shots and has lost three straight starts in place of Semyon Varlamov, who continues to recover from a groin injury. The Avalanche are 2-9-1 in their past 12 games. Laine scored his 18th goal at 7:06 of the second period to make it 1-0. The Avalanche had the Jets pinned in their own end before Paul Postma was able to clear the zone. Scheifele got in behind the defense with Laine streaking down the left side. He made the pass to Laine, whose one-timer beat Pickard on his blocker side. Iginla scored at 17:59 on the power play when his point shot beat Hellebuyck up high. Colorado pulled Pickard in favor of the extra attacker. Ehlers scored his second of the game into an empty net at 19:30 to make it 4-1.

* Scheifele picked up a loose puck at center ice and rushed into the Avalanche zone. Laine, streaking down the left side, stopped near the top of the left circle and Scheifele made the pass to Laine, who scored on his one-time shot.
"It was a good play from [Postma] at the blue line and we got a 2-on-1 with Scheifele," Laine said. "He's a really good passer. He got the pass to me and it was easy to score."

"I thought it looked pretty good. Sometimes when it doesn't feel like a whole lot is going on out there that's when you're playing your best. We didn't give them a whole lot and finally broke them down in the third period." Wheeler said.
"All you care about is how the team is doing and the personal [stats] come second. It's not that I've been feeling that I haven't played well. I've been feeling really good and playing with a lot of confidence." Nikolaj Ehlers

Jets @ Vancouver Canucks 1-4 - Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Vancouver Canucks forward Jannik Hansen is starting to feel good again after missing 16 games with fractured ribs, and the top line is benefiting from it.
Playing for the fifth time since his return, Hansen scored his second goal of the game 3:19 into the third period to break a tie and help the Canucks defeat the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 at Rogers Arena. Hansen tied the game at 1-1 9:18 into the second period, then put the Canucks ahead on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line that beat goalie Connor Hellebuyck high on the blocker side through traffic. Hansen, who scored a career-high 22 goals while playing with Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin last season, has three goals in the past two games.
Sven Baertschi scored on a breakaway at 6:41 to make it 3-1, and Bo Horvat scored into an empty net with 2:14 remaining. Jacob Markstrom made 31 saves for the Canucks (14-16-3), who are 2-0-1 on a four-game homestand. Blake Wheeler scored on a power play and Hellebuyck made 20 saves for the Jets (15-17-3), who are 5-11-2 on the road and play in Vancouver again on Thursday. The Jets outshot the Canucks 13-7 in the first period, controlling play for long stretches and generating several great scoring chances. Wheeler made it 1-0 at 14:08, getting around defenseman Alex Biega down the left wing and beating Markstrom just inside the left post for his 10th goal of the season. Vancouver regrouped during the first intermission.

* Baertschi blocked Dustin Byfuglien's shot at the blue line, went in on a breakaway and beat Hellebuyck over the glove with a backhand despite not being able to feel his left foot. "Totally numb, didn't feel a thing," he said. "But I will take the pain to get the breakaway."
* Jets forward Patrik Laine skated into the top of the left faceoff circle on a power play 2:26 into the first period and sent a rising wrist shot that knocked the mask off Markstrom. "You have to be quick to position [yourself] to square up and be ready when the pucks come," Markstrom said.
* Winnipeg forward Nic Petan returned after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury. … Wheeler's power-play goal was Winnipeg's sixth on the road this season. … Winnipeg had given up nine power-play goals on 17 chances the previous five games but Vancouver was 0-for-3 and only managed one shot with the man advantage.

"A lot of the stuff we'd like to handle better, just the simple passes off the tape that we had to stop and battle back on and just bang it out, instead of being able to create anything. That was probably how we got into trouble. We were looking to create things when we didn't need to." Paul Maurice
"We have a pretty good idea what they are trying to do. They are going to have a pretty good idea what we're trying to do. It's going to be a matter of wills next game. We had a good first period. It wasn't for a lack of preparation." Wheeler said.

Jets @ Vancouver Canucks 4-1 - Thursday, December 22, 2016

Nikolaj Ehlers decided to join linemate Patrik Laine's goal-scoring fun.
Ehlers scored two goals in the third period after setting up Laine's goal in the second to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 at Rogers Arena. Ehlers assisted Laine for the latter's NHL rookie-leading 19th goal of the season to tie it 1-1 with 42.5 seconds left in the second period, then put the Jets ahead at 1:23 of the third. Ehlers picked a pass out of the air in his own zone and led a 2-on-1 rush, faking a pass before beating Canucks goalie Ryan Miller cleanly under the glove to make it 2-1. He then scored a power-play goal at 12:24 of the third to give the Jets a 3-1 lead. Bryan Little scored with 4:17 left and Michael Hutchinson made 22 saves for the Jets (16-17-3), who bounced back from a 4-1 loss in Vancouver on Tuesday. Markus Granlund scored and Miller made 21 saves for the Canucks (14-17-3). Vancouver lost right wing Jannik Hansen, who scored twice on Tuesday, to a lower-body injury with seven minutes left in the second period. Hansen was hit by Jets forward Mathieu Perreault, who was given a kneeing penalty, earlier in the period and pulled up favoring his right leg 11 seconds into his next shift. Canucks coach Willie Desjardins didn't have an update after the game, but Hansen left Rogers Arena with a heavy limp and said he will have an MRI on Friday. Granlund scored at 3:54 of the first period, but Laine tied it late in the second after a rush pass from Ehlers, beating Miller glove side with a wrist shot from just above the right faceoff dot.

* Daniel Sedin had a backdoor tap-in chance to make it 2-0 on a power play 8:30 into the second period, but defenseman Toby Enstrom dove head-first and reached out with his stick to knock it away.
* Bo Horvat fought through two defenders to get in alone on Hutchinson shorthanded early in the second period, but the Jets goalie pushed across to stop him with his blocker.
* Henrik Sedin played his 1200th NHL game, becoming the fourth Swedish player to reach the milestone. … The Canucks recalled forward Anton Rodin from a conditioning stint in the American Hockey League on Thursday. Desjardins said he is ready to play against the Calgary Flames on Friday.
"The compete level changed for us in between the first and the second period." Paul Maurice said.
"He's an amazing kid. I haven't seen a guy who can skate like that, and he has really good hands and he can also score. It's nice to be on the same line as him." Laine, 18, said of Ehlers, 20.
