NHL - Sharks - Round Up November 25-30, 2016

NY Islanders @ Sharks 2-3 - Friday, November 25, 2016

Patrick Marleau redirected a point shot from Brent Burns past goaltender Thomas Greiss with 22.5 seconds remaining in the third period to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 victory against the New York Islanders at SAP Center. The Islanders pulled Greiss for an extra attacker and tied the game 2-2 with 57.2 seconds remaining when defenseman Nick Leddy scored from the left circle, but the Sharks responded quickly. Joe Pavelski and Burns scored in the second period for the Sharks (12-8-1), and backup goaltender Aaron Dell made 26 saves. The Sharks have won the first three games of their five-game homestand. Anders Lee scored in the first period for the Islanders (6-10-4), who are 1-6-1 on the road. Dell defeated the Islanders for the second time this season in his third NHL start. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 18 against New York at Barclays Center and made 21 saves in a 3-2 win. Greiss, who played for the Sharks for parts of four seasons from 2007-13, made 25 saves in his second start against San Jose. Last season, he made 34 saves in a 4-2 win against the Sharks at SAP Center. Lee scored the only goal in the first period on a power play at 3:59. The Sharks then scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Pavelski scored his seventh goal of the season at 5:09, beating Greiss from the right circle on a rush. Burns scored from the neutral zone on an 85-foot wrist shot 34 seconds later. The puck deflected off of Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan's stick above the right circle, changed directions and got past Greiss. The Sharks played most of the game with 11 forwards after fourth-line center Tommy Wingels left early in the first period with an undisclosed injury. Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said he would have an update on Wingels on Saturday.

* Sharks forward Joe Thornton won a battle for the puck along the boards and got it to Burns near the blue line when Marleau established position in the slot for his 94th NHL game-winner. "Got my stick open," Marleau said. "[Burns] made a great shot-pass."
"You get to know their tendencies a little bit. You get to know their top guys, and I think it helped a little bit to have some experience against them." Dell said.
"It was just get right back out there and go after it. You don't like to see another team tying it up that late in the game, but I think we had the right mindset going right back out there and trying to get the win right away." Marleau said.
"It's big to get a win after Thanksgiving. You always worry if the legs are going to show up, or if the turkey's going to show up. It's nice to see the boys were skating and working." Brent Burns

Anaheim Sucks @ Sharks 3-2 - Saturday, November 26, 2016

Ryan Garbutt, Rickard Rakell and Ryan Getzlaf each scored, and the Anaheim Ducks ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center. Backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier made 21 saves for the Ducks (10-8-4), and Corey Perry had two assists. Getzlaf ended a 15-game goal drought when he scored the game-winner on the power play to make it 3-2 at 12:59 of the second period. Logan Couture and defenseman Dylan DeMelo scored for the Sharks (12-9-1), who lost for the first time in four games. Martin Jones made 23 saves. Each team was playing the second game of a back-to-back. On Friday, the Sharks defeated the New York Islanders 3-2, and the Ducks lost to the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2. Couture gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead when he scored a power-play goal at 8:40 of the first period. He put a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle into the right corner of the net for his seventh goal. Garbutt scored 1:04 later to tie it 1-1. Sharks defenseman Paul Martin turned over the puck in the Ducks zone, and Garbutt skated it down the right side with defenseman Brent Burns in pursuit. Garbutt scored when he collided with Jones. Video review initiated by the Situation Room confirmed that the puck crossed the goal line before the net became displaced. Sharks coach Peter DeBoer challenged the goal, claiming Garbutt interfered with Jones before scoring, but it was determined Burns caused Garbutt to contact Jones. Anaheim took a 2-1 lead on Rakell's goal from close range at 13:21 of the first. It was his eighth goal of the season, fourth in five games. DeMelo scored his first goal of the season at 9:43 of the second period, beating Bernier with a 60-foot slap shot to tie it 2-2. The Sharks had five shots on goal in the third period. Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic did not play in the third period. He had 14:29 of ice time on 19 shifts through the second period. Coach Peter DeBoer said he would have an update on Vlasic's condition Sunday.
* Getzlaf, Perry and Rakell each had a hand in Anaheim's first goal. Getzlaf sent a pass from the left faceoff circle to Perry in the slot. Perry redirected the puck ahead to Rakell, who beat Jones with a backhand over Jones' right shoulder.
* Couture scored the first goal, but it wouldn't have happened if not for Sharks captain Joe Pavelski's work in the faceoff circle in the Ducks zone. He won a faceoff against Anaheim center Antoine Vermette, who entered the game ranked No. 1 in the NHL with a faceoff winning percentage of 67.4. Pavelski sent the puck to Patrick Marleau, who passed it to Couture in the right circle, where he scored.
"There was some good stuff that happened. But you have to give them credit; they found a way. I thought that was a winnable game for us, and we just didn't get it done." Peter DeBoer
"We had some chances. They shut it down pretty good." Couture said.

Phoenix Coyotes @ Sharks 1-2 OT - Tuesday, November 29, 2016

Brent Burns scored a power-play goal 19 seconds into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win against the Coyotes at SAP Center. The Sharks went on a power play with 0.3 seconds left in regulation when forward Martin Hanzal went to the penalty box for high sticking Melker Karlsson. San Jose opened overtime with a 4-on-3 advantage, and Burns quickly ended the game when he took a pass from Joe Pavelski in the left circle and beat Coyotes goalie Mike Smith with a slap shot. Chris Tierney scored in the second period and Martin Jones made 18 saves for the Sharks (13-9-1), who moved into first place in the Pacific Division.
Smith made 40 saves for the Coyotes (8-10-3), who had a second-period goal from forward Max Domi. The Sharks outshot Phoenix 14-5 in a scoreless first period, but Domi gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead at 17:19 of the second with a wrist shot from the left circle. Tierney tied it at 15:29 of the second period with his second goal of the season, jamming the puck between Smith's pads from close range. Mikkel Boedker, a former Coyote, had the primary assist, his first point in 13 games. Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson sustained an upper-body injury in the second period. Dave Tippett did not have an update on Ekman-Larsson's injury after the game.
* Boedker sent Tierney a pass along the right boards below the goal line. Tierney took the puck hard to the net and beat Smith between the pads with a wrist shot. It was his second goal in five games.
"We were talking about taking it to the net a couple shifts right before that, so right when I saw the opening I thought I would just take it right there and see what happens," Tierney said. "Just tried to shove it in, and it ended up in."
* The Coyotes showed off their speed and skill on Domi's goal. Defenseman Luke Schenn sent a pass back from the right circle to a trailing Radim Vrbata, who sent a cross-ice pass to Domi in the left circle. Domi put a wrist shot into the upper left corner of the net.
* Sharks forward Patrick Marleau appeared to score 60 seconds into the game, but Tippett challenged the call and after a video review it was overturned because Dillion was offside. ... Karlsson returned to the lineup after missing seven games because of a left ankle injury. He had four shots in 11:37 of ice time.

"A great shot. In that play, you've got Burns on one side and (Logan) Couture on the other loaded up for shots. You can go either way with it. It's nice when you have weapons like that that can execute." Pete DeBoer said.

"Maybe in the two games we've played against them in Arizona we maybe got a little bit frustrated, got away from our game towards the end and they were able to capitalize. They're an opportunistic team. They kind of take advantage of your miscues and it was a credit to us for just kind of sticking with it for even past 60 minutes to get the two points." Brenden Dillon

Sharks  @ Los Angeles Kings 4-1 - Wednesday, November 30, 2016

Kevin Labanc, Logan Couture and Ryan Carpenter scored in the first period, and the San Jose Sharks defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 at Staples Center, ending the Kings winning streak at five. Sharks goalie Martin Jones made 26 saves to win his second game in as many nights. He had 18 saves in a 2-1 overtime victory against the Coyotes on Tuesday. San Jose (14-9-1) has won five of its past six games and leads the Pacific Division with 29 points.
Couture got his ninth goal when he scored into an empty net at 18:43 of the third period. He also had an assist. Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said it was "huge" to get goals from rookies Labanc and Carpenter. Dustin Brown scored in the second period for the Kings (12-10-1), who had won six straight at Staples Center. Peter Budaj made 20 saves. Labanc gave San Jose a 1-0 lead 3:32 into the game when he scored his second NHL goal on an odd-man rush. The Sharks scored two goals in 30 seconds late in the first period to extend their lead to 3-0. Couture knocked in a rebound from close range at 19:05, and Carpenter scored his first NHL goal on an odd-man rush with 25 seconds left. The Kings cut the Sharks lead to 3-1 on Brown's power-play goal at 3:01 of the second period. He lifted a loose puck over Jones from close range into the top of the net just inside the crossbar for his fourth goal. Play continued after Brown's goal before a stoppage was initiated at 3:24 after video review determined the puck crossed the goal line. Jones made 19 saves in the second and third period, including seven over the final 4:06. The Sharks, who eliminated the Kings in five games in the 2016 Western Conference First Round, have won the first two games against them this season.

* Labanc, whose 127 points led the Ontario Hockey League last season, flashed his offensive skill on his first-period goal on a 2-on-1 rush with Couture. Labanc received a cross-ice pass from Couture, and he elevated a wrist shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle inside the left post.
* Los Angeles had cut the San Jose lead to 3-1 early in the second period on Brown's goal and had a chance to pull closer, but forward Trevor Lewis' shot hit the goal post at 3:42. The puck was loose in front of a wide-open net, but before the Kings could tap it in, Sharks defenseman Brent Burns dove and poked it with his stick before clearing it away with his glove while he slid through the crease.
"We needed some contributions tonight. It's a tough situation. Back-to-back, playing last night at home, L.A.'s rested. We look at their home record, we knew this was going to be a really tough game. We challenged the group to have contributions from everybody." DeBoer said.
"He's a legitimate starter, and for me, he's one of the top goalies in the League. He's just getting better. You're just seeing the tip of what he's capable of." Martin Jones
