Avtomobilist v Lada 3-4

In a clash with an automotive theme, Lada’s Nikita Filatov found the right gear to drive his team to success – adding to the pressure on Avtomobilist head coach Andrei Razin. The home team had lost its previous five games, dropping out of the playoff places in the process. The winner in Wednesday’s game would move up to eighth place; the loser would be three points adrift of the qualifying line. Initially it seemed that Avtomobilist was getting over its recent problems. Talismanic forward Anatoly Golyshev marked his return from injury with a goal and an assist as the host opened up a 3-1 lead. But his contribution was outdone by Filatov, who had two goals as well as a helper on Andrei Ivanov’s early opener for Lada. That brought the scores level before Ivanov got his second of the night to win it with three minutes left to play.



Barys Astana v Ak Bars 0-4
Anton Glinkin led the scoring as Ak Bars made it four wins on the bounce with a dominant display at Barys. Glinkin finished the game with 2+1, involved in every goal except the opener. That came in the 14th minute and saw Vasily Tokranov collect the puck in a central position and fire through a crowd of players to beat Henrik Karlsson from distance. The former Traktor forward made his first contribution in the second stanza, claiming an assist as Damir Musin made it 2-0. Then in the third, Glinkin scored two of his own as Ak Bars eased to a comfortable win. Barys may feel that things could have been different after getting the puck into Emil Garipov’s net in the 10th minute only for the video ref to rule it out. Garipov went on to make 25 saves in the game.
Ugra v Neftekhimik 0-2
Neftekhimik’s new head coach, Nikolai Solovyov, got off to a winning start at Ugra. Andrei Stas and Geoffrey Kinrade got the goals while Ville Kolppanen made 31 saves in a 2-0 victory. Solovyov began the season behind the bench at Metallurg Novokuznetsk but became the first casuality of the campaign when he was replaced on August 28.
Jokerit v Dynamo Moscow 1-2
Two goals in six seconds midway through the second period gave Dynamo a decisive edge as Jokerit stumbled to a fifth defeat in six games. Chances were hard to come by at either end for much of the game, but the visiting offense exploded into life in the 31st minute. Martins Karsums converted a power play chance on 30:21, squeezing the puck home from a tight angle after Andrei Mironov’s attempted shot drifted wide of the target. Then on 30:27, Artyom Fyodorov got his second of the season. After stealing the puck from the face-off he was off to the races, slaloming through two defensemen before putting a wrist shot upstairs from the deep slot. Marko Antilla got one back for the host in the 47th minute and the game finally opened up in the final stanza. Sakari Salminen squandered two big chances for the home team, while Dynamo twice rattled the piping through Dmitry Morkovin and Denis Barantsev. But that six-second salvo was enough for the points to go back to Moscow.

But with Peter Regin already hurt (a skate hit is head the previous night against Vityaz), Jokerit coach Jukka Jalonen hinted that another player would be out for some length of time. It was rumoured that player was Arturs Kulda. All in all a very disappointing night for the Helskini-based side who were paying tribute to their former player Ossi Vaananen's.
