NHL - Hawks - Round Up - January 10-17, 2017

Detroit Red Wings @ Hawks 3-4 OT - Tuesday, January 10, 2017
Duncan Keith scored on a power play 38 seconds into overtime to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings at United Center. Brian Campbell, Richard Panik and Tanner Kero also scored for the Blackhawks (27-12-5), who have won four in a row, all on home ice. Rookie forward Ryan Hartman had two assists and has five points (three goals) in the past two games. Corey Crawford made 33 saves for the Blackhawks, who are 17-4-4 at home. Andreas Athanasiou, Tomas Tatar and Luke Glendening scored for Detroit (17-18-6), which has lost back-to-back games and four of its past five (1-3-1). Petr Mrazek made 39 saves. Keith's goal followed a boarding minor called on Justin Abdelkader at 19:44 of the third period. It was the Blackhawks' second power-play goal of the game; they were 2-for-6. Abdelkader, who returned from a knee injury that kept him out 16 games, boarded Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson. The Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead in the first period, when they outshot Detroit 16-7. Campbell and Panik scored 26 seconds apart, after Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson was called for hooking Artem Anisimov at 8:11 on a breakaway. The Red Wings responded with three goals in the second, when they outshot Chicago 20-11. Detroit got goals from Athanasiou, Tatar and Glendening, whose goal with 19 seconds left tied it 3-3 after Kero put Chicago up 3-2 at 18:18.
Hawks Quotes"If I gave away my secrets, then everybody would be using them. I don't know if those secrets work. I've only got two goals."
"We've been finding ways to win, it seems. We did what we had to there as a team, and they came back and scored every time we got the lead, it seemed. Give [the Red Wings] credit, but we've been able to find ways to win. That's a big thing too." Duncan Keith

Hawks @ Washington Capitals 0-6 - Friday, January 13, 2017
Braden Holtby made 24 saves in his NHL-leading sixth shutout of the season, and the Washington Capitals won their eighth consecutive game, 6-0 against the Chicago Blackhawks at Verizon Center. Jay Beagle scored two goals, and Nicklas Backstrom, Brett Connolly, Tom Wilson and T.J. Oshie scored for the Capitals (28-9-5). Holtby has five shutouts in his past 14 games and has allowed three goals in winning his past five games. He has not allowed an even-strength goal since Jan. 3, when he was pulled after allowing three goals on eight shots against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Corey Crawford made 25 saves for the Blackhawks (27-13-5), who had won four in a row. Scott Darling made three saves in third-period relief. Beagle scored at 6:04 of the first period to give Washington a 1-0 lead. Backstrom finished a feed from Oshie 13 seconds later to make it 2-0, and Connolly scored at 17:49 for a 3-0 lead. Wilson's goal with 2:59 remaining in the second period increased the lead to 4-0. The goal was his first since Dec. 11, third of the season. He had two assists for his first three-point game in the NHL. Oshie gave Washington a 5-0 lead at 8:11 of the third. His pass deflected off the hand of Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson into the net. Beagle scored with 1:32 remaining to make it 6-0, his eighth of the season. He has four goals in his past two games against Chicago.

* Oshie played the setup man for Backstrom with a slick centering pass.
* Daniel Winnik took advantage of a turnover by Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival and found Beagle coming through on the rush.
"Certainly nothing good to talk about tonight. It was a big game to start with and we didn't meet the challenge. We had a better second period, but the first period, we didn't touch the puck much and gave up a bunch of quality [chances]. And in the second period we got ourselves back in the game a little bit and had a little bit of a sniff. But it ends up [4-0], now it's a gigantic hole against a good hockey team." Joel Quenneville said.
"We knew they've been playing really good hockey lately, Washington, and we just pretty much did everything we said we wouldn't do, or weren't supposed to do. That was one of those two or three games that you have a year that you're just being outplayed really bad, and that was probably as outplayed as I've been in a long time." Niklas Hjalmarsson
Wild @ Hawks 3-2 - Saturday, January 15, 2017
The Minnesota Wild rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 at United Center for their fourth straight win. Jason Pominville scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves for the Wild (28-9-5), who have defeated the Blackhawks (27-14-5) in eight consecutive regular-season games since 2014-15. With 61 points, Minnesota moved two ahead of Chicago for first place in the Western Conference. The Wild have four games in hand. Patrick Kane scored two goals to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead early in the second period, but Minnesota tied the game 2-2 before the period ended on goals by Nino Niederreiter and Chris Stewart. Pominville made it 3-2 at 5:08 of the third when he picked a rebound off the end boards and shot it past goaltender Corey Crawford. Dubnyk stopped all five Chicago shots on goal in the third, and Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook hit the left post with 36 seconds left. Crawford made 29 saves. Chicago also lost 6-0 at the Washington Capitals on Friday and has lost its past two games after winning four straight. Minnesota tied a franchise record with points in 12 consecutive road games (10-0-2) and is 17-1-1 in its past 19 games overall. The Wild won 5-4 at the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Chicago dominated the first period and took a 1-0 lead at 4:33 when Kane beat Dubnyk to cap a 2-on-1 with Artem Anisimov. Kane scored his second at 4:16 of the second period to make it 2-0. It was his 14th goal and first multiple-goal game of the season. Niederreiter responded by making it 2-1 with a power-play goal at 6:23, and Stewart tied it at 11:00 with a shot from the left circle that beat Crawford high to the short side.

* Pominville went to the net at the right time to score the game-winner. Defenseman Marco Scandella's shot from the left point caromed off the boards and bounced right to him near the right post.
"I was feeling good," Dubnyk said. "I've said it time and again with this group. They make it easy to settle and stay in it, because I know that it doesn't matter what the score is. I've got to keep making saves because we're never going to quit."
* Anisimov played a role in each of Kane's goals. He fed Kane a cross-ice pass on the first and tied up Charlie Coyle on a faceoff to set up the second.
* Chicago went 0-4-1 against Minnesota last season and was outscored 20-9. … The Blackhawks dressed seven defensemen and scratched veteran forwards Jordin Tootoo and Andrew Desjardins.
"It's nice to get one and help the team out in a good situation. I've obviously felt a little snake-bitten lately. I knew it was going to come. I was getting too many looks to not put one in. It came at a pretty good time." said Pominville.
Hawks @ Avalanche 6-4 - Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Rookie Vinnie Hinostroza scored two third-period goals 3:01 apart to help the Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Colorado Avalanche 6-4 at Pepsi Center.
Hinostroza's fellow rookies also contributed. Tanner Kero, who scored an empty-net goal with 10.6 seconds remaining, had two goals and an assist. Nick Schmaltz, who was recalled Saturday from Rockford of the American Hockey League, had a goal and an assist. Hinostroza scored on a breakaway to tie the game 4-4 at 5:10, and he went to the net to redirect Kero's pass behind goalie Semyon Varlamov at 8:11 for a 5-4 lead. The Blackhawks (28-14-5) had lost two consecutive games while outscored 9-2. Matt Duchene scored his 14th and 15th goals for the Avalanche (13-28-1), who completed a four-game homestand 1-3-0 and are 1-12-1 in the past 14 at home. They've lost two in a row after taking a lead into the third period. Duchene gave the Avalanche a 4-3 lead at 14:08 of the second period when he skated along the goal line and shot under goalie Corey Crawford's right arm. The Blackhawks took a 2-1 lead in the first period when Schmaltz and Brent Seabrook sandwiched goals around one by Duchene. Schmaltz scored from the slot at 2:38 for his second goal, but the Avalanche tied it 1-1 when Duchene deflected in Nathan MacKinnon's wrist shot on a power play at 7:39. The Avalanche were 3-for-53 on power plays in the previous 14 games. The Blackhawks regained the lead 2-1 at 12:50 when Seabrook's shot from the blue line went in off Avalanche forward Joe Colborne for his third goal. The Avalanche tied it 2-2 on Blake Comeau's shot from the left circle at 9:03 of the second period for his seventh goal, and Matt Nieto scored his first at 10:06 for a 3-2 lead. The Blackhawks came back to make it 3-3 at 10:25 when Kero chipped the puck by Varlamov's glove for his second goal.
Quenneville said he considered replacing Crawford, who gave up three goals on eight shots in the second period and ended with 19 saves.

* Hinostroza skated into the Avalanche end and slipped the puck by Varlamov's glove to tie the game in the third period.

"We're talking about secondary scoring, and tonight they produced all the goals. It was a fun night for them. It was certainly a great third period and comeback for us."
"I think he understands he can do better. I liked how he battled through it." Quenneville said.
"We came out in the third and everyone was flying. I got a bounce there on the breakaway and I was trying to use my speed and luckily it went in."
"It feels good, especially after the two losses we just had. To come in here and come from behind and win, and the younger guys to chip in, it's nice." Hinostroza said.
"I thought we had a pretty good start in the first period and then we got away from it a little bit in the second. We let them into it and then they took over. We got back to our game in the third and were harder on pucks and all over the ice."
"Whenever you can get that secondary scoring it's going to help the team. Both of our lines were going a little bit and it's nice to contribute offensively." Kero said.
