NHL - Jets - Round Up January 09-14, 2017

Calgary Flames @ Jets 0-2 - Monday, January 09, 2017

Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves to help the Winnipeg Jets to a 2-0 win against the Calgary Flames at MTS Centre. It was Hellebuyck's third shutout this season, first since Nov. 27. He bounced back after allowing three goals in the third period of a 4-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler scored for the Jets (20-20-3), who played their first game without forward Patrik Laine, the NHL rookie scoring leader, since he sustained a concussion on a hit from Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe. Right wing Drew Stafford, who replaced Laine on the Jets' top line, got an assist on Byfuglien's game-winning goal. Chad Johnson made 25 saves for the Flames (22-19-2).
Byfuglien scored his sixth of the season to make it 1-0 at 10:21 of the first period. He took the puck at the Flames blue line, rushed around defenseman Mark Giordano, toe-dragged the puck to his forehand, and shot over Johnson's glove hand. Wheeler made it 2-0 at 3:16 of the second after causing defenseman TJ Brodie to turn over the puck at the Flames blue line. Wheeler beat Brodie to the loose puck and shot to the short side over Johnson's glove for his 12th of the season. Jets left wing Nikolaj Ehlers and Flames left wing Johnny Gaudreau each had a breakaway in the second period. Johnson was able to get his stick down to cover the five-hole to stop Ehlers at 9:37, and Hellebuyck's poke-check got enough of Gaudreau's stick, sending the puck into the corner and out of harm's way with 45 seconds remaining.
* Wheeler's aggressive forecheck against Brodie resulted in a turnover and set up his unassisted goal.

"The message yesterday was trying to focus on the real positive things we did on the road trip. A good majority of that road trip we took some nice strides, it just got away from us at the wrong time in Buffalo. We had our focus in the right place, and we came out determined tonight to get back on track." Blake Wheeler said.
"The guys were blocking a lot of shots, but shots are fun and that game was fun. The way the guys were playing in front of me made it even more fun because they were controlling the shots and making it easy on me. Any shutout is nice. I don't care how they come." Hellebuyck said.
"That's where I'm naturally comfortable, that's where I play. I know that I can produce and contribute in that role, so that's pretty much how it is for me." Stafford said.

Montreal Canadiens @ Jets 7-4 - Wednesday, January 11, 2017

Phillip Danault and Artturi Lehkonen each scored twice to help the Montreal Canadiens defeat the Winnipeg Jets 7-4 at MTS Centre. Sven Andrighetto and Brian Flynn each had a goal and an assist, and Tomas Plekanec scored for the Canadiens (26-10-6). Al Montoya made 23 saves. Mark Scheifele scored twice, and Mathieu Perreault and Bryan Little scored for the Jets (20-21-3). Goalie Connor Hellebuyck was replaced by Michael Hutchinson after allowing three goals on seven shots in his sixth straight start. Hutchinson made 19 saves.
Montreal took a 1-0 lead 57 seconds into the first period when Danault backhanded a shot past Hellebuyck. Flynn made it 2-0 at 4:19, giving Montreal two goals on three shots. Scheifele made it 2-1 at 6:07, and Perreault tied it 2-2 at 12:58, taking a pass from Blake Wheeler in the slot and putting his wrist shot high on Montoya's glove side. Plekanec, who missed the morning skate because of the flu, scored his second goal in as many games, fifth of the season, to make it 3-2 at 14:01. Andrighetto made it 4-2, tapping in a deflected shot attempt from Flynn 53 seconds into the second period. Danault made it 5-2 at 4:31. Scheifele's 19th of the season made it 5-3 35 seconds later. Lehkonen made it 6-3 at 4:10 and 7-3 at 9:05 of the third period, and Little scored at 10:04 to make it 7-4.

* Danault took the puck the length of the ice, deking Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien along the way before putting a wrist shot past Hutchinson.
* Hutchinson stopped Max Pacioretty's initial shot on a breakaway and kicked out his right pad to make a second save on the rebound.

"They had a couple of quick ones, and we were fighting our way back the whole game and we couldn't quite get there. We'd score one and they'd score two. We just didn't have an answer. We weren't good enough." Little said.
"Every time we came back, it just seemed like it was going in the net. We just didn't do a good enough job picking up our guys and gave up a little too much." Blake Wheeler said.
"You deal with it. We aren't sweeping this one under the rug. We're going to take a good look at all of it and make sure we appreciate the value of playing in the National Hockey League and playing a game at home, the cost every NHL game demands, the willingness to pay that price." Paul Maurice

Jets @ Phoenix 3-4 - Friday, January 13, 2017
Brendan Perlini scored twice, and Oliver-Ekman Larsson and Radim Vrbata each had three assists in a 4-3 Coyotes win against the Winnipeg Jets at Gila River Arena. Peter Holland and Jamie McGinn scored, who had four first-period goals for the first time since getting six in a 7-4 win against the Nashville Predators on March 28, 2013. It was the first time the Coyotes scored four goals in any period since the second period of a 5-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 1, 2014. Mike Smith made 34 saves for his first win since Dec. 15 against the Toronto Maple Leafs (3-2 in a shootout). Phoenix has won two in a row after a nine-game losing streak and came off its five-day break with some firepower.
Shawn Matthias, Mark Stuart and Blake Wheeler scored for the Jets (20-22-3), who lost 7-4 to the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday and held a postgame meeting after opening this three-game road trip with their third loss in four games. Connor Hellebuyck allowed three goals on six shots and was pulled 10:41 into the game. Michael Hutchinson made 22 saves in relief. The Jets got off to a good start when Toby Enstrom's shot-pass deflected off the shin pad of Coyotes defenseman Luke Schenn right to Matthias, who beat Smith at 3:43.
The Coyotes then scored three of their four goals on odd-man rushes. Perlini, who scored in a 2-1 shootout win against the New York Islanders on Saturday and had a hat trick for the Tucson of the American Hockey League on Tuesday, beat Hellebuyck at 4:49 on Phoenix's first shot. After Holland scored his first goal of the season at 8:26 for a 2-1 lead, McGinn chased Hellebuyck with a redirect at 10:41, and Perlini made it 4-1 at 14:45 by chipping his power-play rebound past Hutchinson. Stuart scored his first goal in 71 games 2:46 into the third period, and Wheeler made it 4-3 on a deflection with 1:30 remaining.

* Perlini had the classic goal-scorer's goal, racing past a Jets defender on the rush and picking the top corner, short side, on Hellebuyck for his first.
* Back after missing a game with a muscle pull, Coyotes center Martin Hanzal played 20:20, won 17 of 25 faceoffs, and was part of a penalty kill that was 2-for-2.
* Wheeler's deflection of Nikolaj Ehler's shot from the high point with 1:30 left gave the Jets a chance.
* Stuart last scored Oct. 13, 2015 against the New York Rangers.
"Can we get better performances individually out of people? Yeah. But they didn't quit. They kept competing and fighting to the very end and that means a lot right now." Paul Maurice said.
"What do you think? Do you think we were just silent in here with the door shut? Obviously, there was a conversation had between us. Obviously, I'm not going to give you anything that was said in this room." Blake Wheeler

Jets @ Los Angeles Kings 2-3 OT - Saturday, January 14, 2017
Jeff Carter scored 1:36 into overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Staples Center. Jake Muzzin fed Carter in front of the net, where he used a toe-drag to score his Kings-leading 23rd goal. Los Angeles is 9-1 in overtime. No team has won more in overtime (21) since the 3-on-3 format was instituted last season. Marian Gaborik and Dustin Brown scored for Los Angeles (22-17-4), Anze Kopitar had three assists, and Peter Budaj made 26 saves for his 20th win. Brown tied it 2-2 with 5:08 left in the third period. Drew Stafford and Dustin Byfuglien each scored a power-play goal, and Michael Hutchinson made 35 saves for the Jets (20-22-4). Mathieu Perreault had two assists. Maurice was particularly impressed with Hutchinson and his play one night after he made 22 saves in 47:03 in relief of Connor Hellebuyck in a 4-3 loss to the Coyotes. Byfuglien gave Winnipeg a 2-1 lead 7:38 into the third with a point shot through traffic. Gaborik scored 3:19 into the first period to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead, taking a feed from Kopitar and banking it off the crossbar behind Hutchinson. It was Gaborik's third goal in 21 games. Stafford tied it 1-1 at 15:06 of the second period. Perrault feed Stafford at the right faceoff dot, where he scored with a wrist shot.

* Kopitar won a puck battle and kicked the puck to Muzzin, who found a charging Carter at the edge of the left circle. Carter went top-shelf to give the Kings the win.

"[Kopitar] is the guy that really makes the play," Brown said. "He plays it with his foot, and it's plays like that that kind of separate him from pretty much the rest of us in here."
* With 7:23 left in the third period and the Jets pressuring, Blake Wheeler got a partial breakaway and shot from point-blank range, but Budaj made the save to keep it 2-1.
* Sutter won his 617th NHL game, tying Jacques Lemaire for 12th on the all-time list. Sutter is 617-449-79 with 101 ties with the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames and Kings. … The Kings have never lost a home game to the Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers in regulation (8-0-4). … Budaj won 20 games for the first time since 2008-09 (20-29-5 for the Colorado Avalanche). … Jets forward Shawn Matthias played his 500th NHL game. … Jets forward Adam Lowry played his 200th.

"I really liked a lot of what we did and looked to build and got stronger and stronger. We needed the third one to go to put a team like that out."
"A solid game. Really, really good and battled around the net. A good confidence booster for him and our team in front of him." Paul Maurice said.
"Tonight was all about effort. We gave up an early goal but we didn't let that get to us and we kept battling. We were able to get a couple of goals. It's unfortunate that they tied it up late in the game, but at the same time the way we rebounded after an early goal was really a huge positive for us." Michael Hutchinson
