NHL - Latest News

Carolina - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with Elias Lindholm on a two-year contract extension. The deal will pay Lindholm $2.5 million in 2016-17 and $2.9 million in 2017-18.
"Elias played well last season, nearly doubling his offensive numbers from his rookie year. We expect he will be a very important part of the Hurricanes as he continues to develop as a professional."
Los Angeles - Former Kings center Mike Richards, 30, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance while entering Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Thursday. Richards, who is from Kenora, Ontario, is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Sept. 10. The RCMP provided no other updates. The Kings terminated Richards' contract June 29, for a "material breach of the requirements of his contract." The NHL Players' Association filed a grievance over the termination of the contract on behalf of Richards on Aug. 10.
No date for that grievance, which would be contested before an independent arbitrator, has been set.
AHL - The American Hockey League will open its 80th season with five games on Oct. 9 as the league unveiled its schedule for the 2015-16 season Thursday.
* Teams will play 76 games, with the exception of five teams that joined the league in January. The Bakersfield Condors (Edmonton Oilers), Ontario Reign (Los Angeles Kings), San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks), San Jose Barracuda (San Jose Sharks) and Stockton Fire (Calgary Flames) will play 68 games. Because of the unbalanced schedule, teams will qualify for the Calder Cup Playoffs based on points percentage.
* The five new teams will be part of the Pacific Division, along with the San Antonio Rampage (Colorado Avalanche) and Texas Stars (Dallas Stars).
* Also returning to the league is the Manitoba Moose, who will be the AHL affiliate for the Winnipeg Jets. The St. John's Ice Caps, who had been affiliated with the Jets, now are the top affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens.
