Amur v Kunlun 3-1
Amur got swift revenge for its defeat in Beijing with a 3-1 home win over Kunlun Red Star. The Chinese team opened the scoring in the 18th minute thanks to Eetu Poysti’s first goal of the season, but Amur hit back in the middle stanza with goals from Tomas Zahorna and Alexei Byvaltsev. Artyom Zub completed the scoring in the 51st minute.
Traktor v Metallurg Magnitogorsk 5-3
Not even a record-breaker can win every time. Sergei Mozyakin scored twice for Metallurg but still ended on the losing side in this South Ural derby clash.
Russia’s all-time top scorer put Magnitka ahead in the 13th minute and then made it 3-2 midway through the game – but after that Traktor hit back to take the win. Two goals in the space of 30 seconds from Nikolai Belov and Alexander Chernikov put the home side ahead for the first time as the second stanze came to an end. Then a power play goal from Yury Petrov early in the third gave Traktor a 5-3 advantage that it held to the end. And while Mozyakin was adding to his impressive career tally, 22-year-old prospect Artyom Sevankayev also scored twice to open his KHL tally after breaking through from Traktor’s MHL feeder team, Chelmet. Ak Bars v Avangard 1-0
A single goal from Justin Azevedo early in the third period was enough to separate two of the big hitters in the Eastern Conference. Avangard came into the game in more convincing form, leading the section despite playing two games fewer than the host. But Ak Bars finished the day on top of the table thanks to Azevedo’s goal and 33 saves from Emil Garipov. The visitor’s frustrations were compounded by the manner of the winning goal. Azevedo had only just emerged from the sin bin when he exchanged passes with Artyom Lukoyanov, glided behind the net and emerged to fire into the empty half of the net as Dominik Furch struggled to get back into position.
Vityaz v Spartak 5-2
Two goals from Miro Aaltonen helped Vityaz to a 5-2 win at home to Spartak. Maxim Afinogenov put the host in front after just 20 seconds but Viktor Bobrov tied the game in the eighth minute. Aaltonen’s double came in the middle stanza as Vityaz opened up a 4-2 lead; Nikita Vyglazov completed the scoring in the third.
Dinamo Minsk v Dinamo Riga 2-1 OT
Dinamo Minsk’s first home game of the season ended in victory thanks to Matt Ellison’s overtime goal. Ellison struck 41 seconds into the extras to snap a 1-1 tie with Dinamo Riga. Earlier Evgeny Kovyrshin put the Belarusians in front late in the second period before Lauris Darzins tied it up early in the third.
Dynamo Moscow v Sochi 1-2
These two teams look set to repeat last season’s performance, where they finished next to each other in the Western Conference. That time around, Sochi had the edge in the regular season, only to suffer a sweep in the first round of playoff action. But tonight the Black Sea men got a small measure of revenge for that setback as they moved level on points with the Blue-and-Whites.
Initially it seemed that Dynamo was on course for victory after Martins Karsums’ goal gave the home team the lead at the second intermission. But a third-period fightback saw Andrei Kostitsyn tie the scores during a 5-on-3 power play before Eric O’Dell got the game-winner with five minutes to play. That was the Canadian forward’s fourth goal of the season and it secured Sochi’s fourth win in a row.
