Metallurg Magnitogorsk v Ugra 2-3 OT
Anton Kuryanov handed the defending champion a shock home defeat with the overtime win in Magnitogorsk. The veteran 33-year-old, for many years a stalwart at Avangard, grabbed his third goal of the season in the third minute of the extras. He flicked in a wrist shot from the slot after Evgeny Lapenkov’s pass from behind the red line found him with just enough space to get a look at Vasily Koshechkin’s net. Earlier Jan Kovar twice put Magnitka in front, but Konstantin Mayorov tied it up both times. His second equalizer came just 50 seconds from the end of the game.
Salavat Yulaev v Barys Astana 5-2
Enver Lisin took his tally to four goals in two games after scoring another brace for Salavat Yulaev. The forward found the net twice in Thursday’s 5-1 win over Avtomobilist and repeated that achievement against another struggling team, Barys. Lisin struck in the 26th minute to cancel out Nigel Dawes’ first-period opener, then chipped in with the fourth in the 56th minute. In between, Kirill Kaprizov got on the scoresheet for the second game running and Sami Lepisto added Salavat’s third. Dawes got his and Barys’ second late on, but there was still time for Anton Lazarev to add a fifth.
Traktor v Avtomobilist 3-2
Two goals for Alexander Chernikov gave Traktor a 3-2 win and continued Avtomobilist’s travails. Rok Ticar was recalled to the Avto roster and gave his team an 11th-minute lead but Kirill Koltsov tied it up almost immediately. Chernikov’s strikes took the host to 3-1 before Alexei Simakov pulled a goal back late on for the visitor.
Lada v Admiral 2-3
Admiral picked up a valuable away win at Lada, helped by a 10th goal of the season from Robert Sabolic. The Slovenian international got the clutch goal to tie it at 2-2 early in the third period before Viktor Alexandrov got the winner 90 seconds later.
Severstal v Dinamo Minsk 3-4 SO
Dinamo Minsk bounced back from two defeats with a shoot-out win at Severstal. Alexander Materukhin was the only player on target post-game after a 3-3 tie in regulation. Severstal will be frustrated to take just one point from a game where it led 2-0 on goals from Daniil Vovchenko and Vojtech Polak in the first 10 minutes, and then 3-2 thanks to Dmitry Kagarlitsky. But Alexander Kulakov forced overtime, and Materukhin and goalie Ben Scrivens did the rest for Dinamo.
Ak Bars v Kunlun 2-0
It’s now eight wins from eight games for Ak Bars – but goalie Stanislav Galimov was the star of a hard-fought game against Kunlun. He made 27 saves to complete his second successive shut-out and freeze out a feisty performance from the visitor. There was not much to choose between the teams after two goalless periods but Alexander Svitov finally broke the deadlock in the 44th minute. That prompted a surge of offense from Kunlun as the Chinese team desperately sought a way back into the game, but Galimov and his defensemen stood firm. Victory was confirmed late on when Vladimir Tkachyov got an empty-net goal.
Spartak v Sibir 2-1 SO
It was a tale of three goalies as Spartak edged Sibir in a shoot-out. For the home team’s Nikita Bespalov, today was a big day. The youngster faced his former club for the first time since leaving Novosibirsk in the summer, and came up with 27 saves before denying Sergei Shumakov and Maxim Shalunov to claim the victory. But for his former team-mate Alexander Salak, the evening ended abruptly when he left the game injured following a clash with Ryan Stoa. The Spartak forward took a minor penalty for slashing after the incident in the 39th minute, while Salak was replaced by Alexei Krasikov. Sibir led 1-0 on Shalunov’s power play goal at that time, and Krasikov had a busy time of it in the third period before he was finally beaten by Vyascheslav Leshchenko with less than two minutes left. In the shoot-out Stoa and Alexander Vasiliyev both scored for Spartak; Konstantin Okulov got Sibir’s sole reply.
Torpedo v Metallurg Nk 6-1
Torpedo was the day’s biggest winner, hitting Metallurg Novokuznetsk for six. Kuznya took a 13th-minute lead through Ilya Musin, but once Dmitry Shulenin and Sam Lofquist scored in quick succession the game was heading the home team’s way. Maxim Osipov and Stanislav Yegorshev added two in a minute midway through the second session and Kaspars Daugavins and Carter Ashton completed the 6-1 scoreline before the 40-minute mark.
Sochi v Avangard 2-1
HC Sochi made it three wins in a row with a hard-fought victory at home to Avangard. There was nothing between the teams until Igor Levitsky opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and the game remained in the balance until Andrei Kostitsyn made it 2-0 on 53:50. There was still time for Avangard’s Nikolai Lemtyugov to reduce the deficit in the last minute, but Sochi held on for the win.
CSKA Moscow v Dinamo Riga 3-2
Jan Mursak got a late winner for CSKA after a resilient Dinamo Riga tested the Army Men in Moscow. The Latvians were not expect to offer much in this game, as they remain rooted to the foot of the Western Conference table. But Dinamo twice pegged CSKA back before Mursak settled the outcome in the 57th minute. The Slovenian international had a straightforward finish thanks to a flash of brilliance from Bogdan Kiselevich, whose backhand pass deceived Dinamo’s defense and presented Mursak with an almost unguarded net. Earlier CSKA took the lead in the 11th minute through Jonas Enlund, but Lauris Darzins levelled in the first period. Then Vyacheslav Osnovin got on the scoresheet for the second game running only for Mikelis Redlihs to tie it up at 2-2.
