Two goals in the last five minutes gave Severstal a 4-2 victory at Sibir. The teams went into the third period tied at 2-2 after Daniil Vovchenko cancelled out Konstantin Okulov’s second-period goal for the host. But Maxim Trunyov broke the deadlock with three minutes left and Pavel Chernov fired into the empty net for his second of the evening to give the visitor the verdict.
Metallurg Nk v CSKA 2-4
CSKA’s young guns fired a three-goal blitz either side of the midway point to turn this game around. Struggling Metallurg had stunned the Western Conference high-flyer by opening a 2-0 lead. Ignat Zemchenko opened the scoring in the 13th minute after he reacted first to a rebound, then Andrei Pervyshin made it 2-0 early in the second on a power play. But Valery Nichushkin started the CSKA fightback. In the 29th minute he got on the end of Jan Mursak’s pass from behind the net to halve the deficit. Then Nikita Kvartalnov tied the game when he forced the puck home after Sergei Andronov’s shot sparked a scramble on the slot. Metallurg called a time-out and looked to re-group, but after less than 90 seconds Alexander Kutuzov made it 3-2 to the Army Men. Another youngster, Andrei Svetlakov, completed the scoring in the 52nd minute.
Avangard v SKA 2-3 SO
Pavel Datsyuk’s mastery of the penalty shot earned SKA victory in Omsk, but only after the league leader gave up a 2-0 lead at Avangard. As Dominik Furch stayed back on his crease, Datsyuk advanced and delivered the puck-handling chops to beat the Czech international and win the shoot-out for his team.
But many from Petersburg might feel that this was the second team SKA had the beating of Avangard this evening. Evgeny Ketov’s ninth-minute goal gave the Army Men an early advantage and Ilya Kovalchuk doubled the lead on a power play deep into the second stanza. Avangard was not about to give up, though. Valentin Pyanov, enjoying by far the best season of his career to date, got a power play goal early in the third and when Nikolai Prokhorkin was sin-binned for throwing his stick, Nikita Nikitin took advantage to tie things up with 10 minutes left. The host dominated the extras, firing in eight shots on Mikko Koskinen’s net without finding a winning. And Koskinen held firm in the shoot-out to steer his team over the line.
Avtomobilst v Vityaz 2-1Avtomobilist celebrated its second victory in three days after edging Vityaz 2-1. Nikolai Timashov got the all-important goal in the 52nd minute to ease the pressure on Andrei Razin’s men. Earlier Artyom Gareyev gave Avto a third-minute lead before Alexei Makeyev tied it up in the 45th.
Barys v Lokomotiv 1-8
Barys looked to be turning the corner in a difficult season after two shut-out victories in its previous two games, but Lokomotiv shunted aside that potential revival with a crushing performance. Things started well enough for the host, with Martin St. Pierre giving the Kazakhs a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, but that was as good as it got. Daniil Apalkov tied it up soon after and Brandon Kozun’s power play goal 30 seconds before the hooter gave the visitor the lead at the intermission. Kozun added his second and Stanislav Chistov made it 4-1, prompting Barys to swap goalies and bring Vitaly Kolesnik off the bench to face his former club. But there was to be no old pals’ act in a ruthless third period display that saw Loko fire in four unanswered goals. Max Talbot got the first, adding to two earlier assists, and Alexander Polunin made it 6-1 in the 47th minute. The last two minutes saw two more goals for Lokomotiv as Pavel Kraskovsky and Denis Mosalyov wrapped up a convincing win.
Ugra v Dynamo 0-1
Dynamo Moscow edged a 1-0 win at Ugra thanks to a first-period goal from Maxim Karpov. Alexander Yeryomenko made 21 saves as the Blue-and-Whites ended a three-game losing streak.
Ak Bars v Neftekhimik 3-1
Ak Bars defeated Neftekhimik in the Tatarstan derby, avenging a shoot-out defeat back in August. Vladimir Tkachyov scored twice and Andrei Popov got the other in a 3-1 victory that snapped a two-game losing streak. Dan Sexton got Neftekhimik’s reply.
