NHL Results - Fri, Jan 09, 2015

NY Islanders @ New Jersey 3-2 OT - Tavares scored his second goal of the game with 1:55 remaining in overtime to give New York a 3-2 victory. Tavares was dominant when his team needed him most. He scored his 19th of the season and League-leading third overtime goal by stripping the puck from Devils defenseman Adam Larsson behind the net and skating into the slot before beating rookie goaltender Keith Kinkaid. Tavares pulled the Islanders into a 2-2 tie with 6:13 left in regulation when he banked a shot into the net off the left leg of Kinkaid from along the goal line near the left post. The Devils took their second lead of the game, 2-1, when Gomez put the puck into an empty net at 7:23 of the third after a turnover by Halak. The goaltender attempted to control the puck behind his net after a dump-in by Michael Ryder but seemed surprised when a hustling Adam Henrique charged the zone and simply took the puck away from him in the trapezoid before feeding Gomez alone in the slot. The Islanders trailed 1-0 after 40 minutes but tied the game 1:02 into the third period when Bailey redirected a shot past Kinkaid from the slot. Tavares won an offensive-zone draw against Zajac and defenseman Calvin de Haan took a slap shot from the left point that Bailey deflected into the net for his seventh of the season. Zajac gave the Devils a 1-0 lead in the second at 11:57 of the second period. Following a give-and-go with Patrick Elias from the right circle, Zajac got a return feed at the right hash and ripped home his seventh of the season. In an effort to spark his offense, Capuano moved Mikhail Grabovski onto the top line alongside Tavares and Okposo to open the game. But Bailey took his place after Grabovski left the game midway through the second period with a lower-body injury and didn't return.
Columbus @ Toronto 2-5 - Toronto took a 4-1 first-period lead. Ryan Johansen scored his 14th goal of the season 3:15 into the game, but Maple Leafs forward Tyler Bozak made it 1-1 with his 14th 5:15 later. Bozak tried to pass across the crease to Phil Kessel, but the puck went off the skate of Blue Jackets defenseman Cody Goloubef and through the legs of goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Daniel Winnik's third goal of the season with 5:26 left made it 2-1, and then Kessel and van Riemsdyk scored power-play goals 52 seconds apart. Kessel's 19th of the season came on a 5-on-3 power play after Blue Jackets defenseman David Savard took an interference penalty that was followed by a bench minor for too many men on the ice 21 seconds later. Kessel took a cross-crease pass from van Riemsdyk and deflected the puck past Bobrovsky with 3:29 left in the period. Kessel set up van Riemsdyk with 2:37 to go when he passed across the zone for a wrist shot that beat Bobrovsky from the faceoff circle to his left. Van Riemsdyk's second goal came into an empty-net with 1:13 left in the third period; it gave him 19 goals this season. Johansen's second goal came on a power play 3:43 into the second period. Winnik took a tripping penalty at 2:31, and Johansen's wrist shot from the faceoff circle beat Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier up high. Bobrovsky made 27 saves after signing a four-year contract extension worth $29.7 million on Friday afternoon.
Buffalo @ Tampa Bay 1-2 - Steven Stamkos scored with 5:18 remaining in the third period to give the Lightning a 2-1 win. Stamkos' 22nd goal came on a 2-on-1 with Jonathan Drouin providing the assist on the wing. Stamkos sent a wrist shot over Buffalo goalie Michal Neuvirth. The Sabres tied the game 1-1 with a shorthanded goal 50 seconds into the second period. Forward Cody McCormick capitalized on a Lightning turnover in the neutral zone and pushed a shot past goalie Ben Bishop on a breakaway. The goal siren accidentally went off when Lightning forward Brett Connolly rushed the net with a backhand shot that Neuvirth saved with his glove. Tampa Bay defenseman Anton Stralman knocked a slap shot off the post, and Neuvirth saved a one-timer from Stamkos in the slot in the final minute of the period. Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead 3:51 into the first period when Valtteri Filppula scored his eighth goal. Ryan Callahan rushed the net and got a shot on Neuvirth, who failed to cover the loose puck that Filppula put in the open net.
Florida @ Calgary 6-5 - Fleischmann scored the game-winner off a crease scramble, lifting a backhand over defenseman Kris Russell, who leads the NHL with 128 blocked shots, and goaltender Jonas Hiller. With Boyes in the penalty box for slashing and Calgary's net empty, the Flames came close to tying the game. Joe Colborne nearly banked a backhand off the back of Panthers goalie Al Montoya but the puck lay in the crease untouched before play stopped.

Campbell put Florida ahead 5-4 at 9:29 of the third period. After keeping a clearing attempt from Deryk Engelland onside, Campbell took a wrist shot that floated through a crowd before hitting Hiller high and trickling over the goal line. The goal was reviewed but allowed to stand after video was inconclusive in determining whether the puck deflected off Bergenheim's possible high stick.

Stajan tied it 5-5 with 3:54 left, chipping in off a scramble in front of Montoya.
Stajan scored on Calgary's first shot 2:42 into the first period. With Lance Bouma pressuring, Panthers 18-year-old rookie defenseman Aaron Ekblad sent a blind pass into the slot that Stajan fired by a surprised Montoya. Less than two minutes later, another turnover led to a tie game. Hiller, out of his crease to play the puck to Mason Raymond behind the net, whiffed on the pass. Boyes centered a feed to Huberdeau, who scored his seventh of the season at 4:28.
Huberdeau returned the favor at 13:12, sending a pass off the boards that Boyes redirected behind Hiller to put the Panthers up 2-1. With Panthers forward Dylan Olsen serving a delay of game penalty, Brodie sent a seeing-eye wrist shot from the point that found its way under the right pad of Montoya to tie the game 2-2 with 3:24 remaining in the first. Brodie's goal, his first in 17 games, came on Calgary's third shot. Backlund, with his second goal in as many games after missing 29 with an abdominal injury, and Bergenheim exchanged goals 19 seconds apart less than three minutes into the second period. Brodie then scored with a point shot that squeaked between Montoya's legs to put Calgary up 4-3 at 8:13. Florida tied it again on Hayes' wrist shot from the high slot that beat Hiller to his glove side with 2:55 left in the period

Chicago @ Edmonton 2-5 - Saad put the Blackhawks up 1-0 at 7:34 of the first period, breaking out with Marian Hossa on a 2-on-1 rush after Nikita Nikitin lost possession of the puck at the Chicago blue line. Scrivens stopped Hossa's shot but the rebound fell to Saad, who put it into the open net. The Oilers tied it at 8:52 on a power-play goal by Pouliot, capitalizing on a turnover behind the Blackhawks net. Roy put Edmonton up 2-1 at 13:35 on the power play, finishing off a passing play started by Anton Lander in the Blackhawks' zone. Lander fired a cross-ice pass to Teddy Purcell, who found a streaking Roy in front. Roy tipped Purcell's pass in over Raanta for his third goal of the season and second with the Oilers since being acquired in a trade from the Nashville Predators on Dec. 29.
Saad tied the game 5:47 into the second period on a goal similar to his first. He and Hossa broke out on a 2-on-1 against defenseman Mark Fayne. Hossa's shot was stopped, but Saad got the rebound and beat Scrivens. Petry put Edmonton ahead to stay 46 seconds later, getting to a rebound in front following a shot from Yakupov and lifting the puck over Raanta for his fourth of the season.
Edmonton put the game away with two goals in a 43-second span late in the third period. Yakupov scored on a 2-on-0 breakaway at 16:51 taking the puck himself and lifting a backhand over Raanta. The goal was Yakupov's first in 15 games. Hall scored into an empty net at 17:34 to secure the win.
