NHL Results - Sat, Jan 10, 2015

Boston @ Philadelphia 3-1 - The Flyers lost starting goaltender Steve Mason 7:07 into the game with a lower-body injury, when he went down to make a save on a long, bouncing shot by Craig Cunningham but couldn't get up. Mason was able to skate off under his own power but went immediately to the locker room. Pastrnak skated on a line with center David Krejci for the second straight game. Playing with Pastrnak is a change for Krejci, who for most of his time with the Bruins has played with large power forwards. Pastrnak had 10 goals and 27 points in 24 games with Providence of the AHL. They looked like they found some chemistry on Pastrnak's second goal at 4:58 of the third period that gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Pastrnak took a pass in transition from Adam McQuaid at the Philadelphia blue line and blindly dropped the puck for Krejci. As the Flyers turned their attention to Krejci, he passed across the zone to Pastrnak for an easy tap-in. If the second goal was skill, the first showed some grit. Pastrnak jumped into the slot to poke in the rebound of a Torey Krug shot at 11:23 of the first period for a power-play goal. Trailing 2-0, the Flyers had three straight power plays midway through the third period. But they allowed Kelly's shorthanded goal off a 2-on-1 rush with Loui Eriksson to go down 3-0 and had a total two shots, one of them Giroux's goal from the left side through a Wayne Simmonds screen to end Rask's shutout.
Nashville @ Minnesota 3-1 - Calle Jarnkrok broke a 1-1 tie with his goal 3:48 into the third period. He gathered in a rebound of an Olli Jokinen shot near the right circle and shot into an open net for his fifth of the season. Nashville took the lead 4:01 into the game after a defensive miscue left Mike Fisher alone in front. Wilson won a puck battle along the end wall and centered it to Fisher, who roofed a backhand past Backstrom for his seventh goal of the season. Minnesota controlled play for much of the first period and tied the game at 14:14. After Wild forward Nino Niederreiter beat out an icing, defenseman Christian Folin pinched into the corner to retrieve a loose puck. He threw it toward the net, where it landed on the tape of Charlie Coyle on top of the blue paint. He had an open net for his fourth goal of the season at 14:14. Nashville scored with 11:13 remaining in the third period when Wilson was gifted a turnover by Wild defenseman Justin Falk. The puck came right to Wilson, who was alone in front and flipped a backhand through Backstrom's five-hole. Wild forward Zach Parise played 23:08 in returning to the lineup after missing two games to be with his father, J.P. Parise, who died Wednesday.
Detroit @ Washington 1-3 - With the Capitals on a power play in the opening minute, Howard left his crease to settle a puck behind the net. Miscommunication by the Red Wings allowed Brouwer to steal the puck and tuck it in at 1:53 for his 12th goal. Howard awkwardly lunged toward the goal in an attempt to make the save and then was unable to get up, requiring assistance to leave the ice. He was named Detroit’s lone representative in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game earlier Saturday. Carlson's goal at 1:35 of the second period capped an impressive rush by the Capitals. Forward Nicklas Backstrom carried the puck into the offensive zone before passing to Andre Burakovsky, who pivoted and spotted Carlson trailing the play for a one-timer. Ward extended Washington’s lead to 3-0 at 11:39, settling a bouncing puck and firing it past Mrazek. Detroit scored with 12 seconds remaining when Washington defenseman Matt Niskanen's giveaway set up Ericsson's first goal of the season.
Trotz praised the Capitals’ response to the late goal.

NY Islanders @ Columbus 5-2 - Nikolay Kulemin scored 31 seconds into the game, and Matt Martin, Anders Lee and Strait gave the Islanders a 4-1 lead after two periods. Kyle Okposo scored for the Islanders in the third. New York's speed created havoc throughout, but the Islanders couldn't break a 1-1 tie until getting three goals in a 7:27 span of the second. New York took a 2-1 lead with 9:56 left in the second off the rush with Hickey sending a pass cross-ice to Strome on the right wing. Martin redirected Strome's pass just outside the crease, leaving Bobrovsky no chance to react, for his sixth goal. Lee converted a turnover with 6:23 left for a 3-1 lead. The puck skipped Columbus defenseman James Wisniewski at center ice, and Kevin Connauton whiffed on a clearance at the blue line. That's all the space Lee needed to skate in alone on Bobrovsky and beat him with a backhand shot for his 10th goal. Strait scored four minutes later when he controlled a loose puck and his shot went in off Johansen's stick. Before the puck came to Strait, it had been deflected high into the air.
Ottawa @ Phoenix 5-1 - Mikkel Boedker gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead 4:31 into the game. Boedker took a Sam Gagner pass in the circle, curled toward the slot and patiently picked out the top corner over Anderson for his 12th goal of the season. The second assist went to rookie Lucas Lessio, his first NHL point in his eighth game. Martin Erat took a holding penalty and the Senators scored as the power play was ending. Erik Karlsson hit the post with a slap shot and the rebound set off a scramble in front of the crease. Zibanejad pushed the puck to Michalek at the side of the net, and he scored his fourth goal at 7:08 to tie it 1-1. The Senators took a 2-1 lead at 13:09 on a nice play by Kyle Turris. He sped around the net and tried a wraparound that was stopped by Smith. The loose puck slid between the skates of Chris Summers to MacArthur, who scored his 12th of the season. Ottawa extended the lead in the second period, seconds after a shot by Brandon Gormley hit the crossbar behind Anderson, went along the goal line but didn't cross. Hoffman stole a Keith Yandle pass in the Phoenix zone, took a return pass from Zibanejad and beat Smith at 9:31 to give the Senators a 3-1 lead. Ceci made it 4-1 on a power play 1:26 into the third period on a setup from Karlsson. Legwand scored with 6.5 seconds left.
Calgary @ Vancouver 1-0 - Ortio was called up on Wednesday after backup Karri Ramo sustained an upper-body injury against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday, but the 23-year-old didn't make it to Calgary until Friday afternoon after a snowstorm in Chicago resulted in his connecting flight being cancelled. Instead, he flew to Toronto and stayed there overnight before flying to Winnipeg and, finally, Calgary in time to dress as Jonas Hiller's backup in a 6-5 loss to the Florida Panthers on Friday. The Flames were outshot 15-6 in the first period but converted a 2-on-1 chance 5:38 into the game. Flames rookie Johnny Gaudreau led the rush into the Canucks end before passing to Vancouver native David Jones to create an odd-man situation down low. Backlund drove the net and chipped Jones' cross-ice pass in off Lack. The Flames almost made it 2-0 when center Sean Monahan hit the short side post from the left faceoff circle with 3:33 left in the first period, but got a break when Canucks counterpart hit the cross bar from similar range one minute later. Daniel Sedin hit the post on a shorthanded 2-on-1 slap shot early in the second period, and Jannik Hansen hit the crossbar on a one-timer from between the hash marks a couple of minutes later. Vancouver almost tied the game with 4:29 left in the second period, but the goal was waved off because Henrik Sedin knocked it in with a high stick. Ortio made two blocker saves on Daniel Sedin from point blank range 30 seconds part, but the rebound on the second shot bounced high over his head. Henrik Sedin was behind the net, and he tipped it in past Ortio's but before it came down below the crossbar. Derek Dorsett got wide around defenseman Dennis Wideman with 6:45 left in the third period, but couldn't beat Ortio in tight.
Winnipeg @ Los Angeles 5-4 SO - Winnipeg blew a three-goal first-period lead and watched Los Angeles take the lead early in the third. But the Jets rallied to tie the game with less than six minutes left in regulation, then won it on Little's shootout goal, his first in four tries this season. Mike Richards missed the net in the bottom of the tiebreaker's fourth round when his attempt went high and wide. Hutchinson denied Drew Doughty, Trevor Lewis and Jeff Carter before the Richards miss. The loss was further dampened by news Los Angeles could be without two-thirds of "That '70s Line" for a significant amount of time. Tanner Pearson left the game midway through the second period after sustaining a broken bone in his left leg/ankle, and the Kings announced before the game that Tyler Toffoli is out indefinitely with mononucleosis. The Jets took a 3-0 lead on goals by Mathieu Perreault, Little and Blake Wheeler in the game's first seven minutes. Wheeler's pass went in off Lewis's skate on the power play at 6:39 to give Winnipeg three goals on its first four shots. Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams scored power-play goals to cut the Kings' deficit to 3-2 in a momentum-swinging first period. Kopitar put in Doughty's rebound on a two-man advantage at 14:31, and Williams tapped in a loose puck at 15:58. Carter nearly tied it when he hit the crossbar on a shorthanded breakaway midway through the second. Marian Gaborik completed the Kings' comeback from down 3-0 when he put in a loose puck that got caught in Enstrom's skates 1:29 into the third period. It was his 13th goal, tops on the Kings. The Kings went up 4-3 when Kyle Clifford's shot went in off Stuart's skate at 12:25 of the third. The Jets tied it 4-4 on Zach Bogosian's wrist shot with 5:56 left in regulation to stun the crowd.
