NHL - Results - October 08-09, 2015

Thursday, October 08
* Ottawa @ Buffalo 3-1 - Kyle Turris gave the Senators a 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the game when he beat Robin Lehner with a wrist shot over his glove hand. Mike Hoffman carried the puck into the Sabres zone and got behind Cody Franson when he connected with Turris, who was alone in the slot as he skated to the net. Ryan O'Reilly tried to get back to cover Turris but didn't catch him before Turris' shot got past Lehner. Turris gave the Senators a 2-0 lead with 9:11 left in the second period. Mark Stone intercepted a puck behind the net from Rasmus Ristolainen and passed out front to Hoffman. Hoffman's shot was blocked by David Legwand and the loose puck went to Turris, who shot it past Sabres goalie Chad Johnson. Jack Eichel scored in his NHL debut, on a power play 9:11 into the third period. With Patrick Wiercioch in the penalty box for hooking, Marcus Foligno passed to Eichel in the faceoff circle, where he took a wrist shot that beat Craig Anderson over his shoulder to make it 2-1. Evander Kane nearly tied the game 1:23 later when he jammed the puck past Anderson on the near post, but Cameron challenged the call saying the Sabres were offside. Curtis Lazar scored an empty-net goal with 1:04 left.
* Philadelphia @ Tampa Bay 2-3 OT - Jason Garrison scored 2:17 into the NHL's first 3-on-3 overtime. Each team had several scoring chances in the fast-paced overtime. Ben Bishop stopped Scott Laughton on a penalty shot at 1:27 before Garrison ended it with his second goal of the game on a backhand shot on a breakaway against Steve Mason. The Lightning took a 1-0 lead at 1:25 of the second period when Garrison scored with a wrist shot from just inside the blue line. Callahan and Jonathan Drouin got the assists on the goal, which was helped by a Steven Stamkos screen on Mason. Philadelphia tied the game 1-1 with 9:46 left in the second when Read went five-hole on Bishop to finish a give-and-go with Laughton. Less than two minutes after Read's goal, the Flyers took a 2-1 lead when Schenn scored on the power play. Evgeny Medvedev took a shot from the point that deflected off of Bishop, and Jakub Voracek cleared the loose puck to Schenn, who scored on the stick side. Tampa Bay evened the score 2-2 on a power-play goal from Callahan after he gathered the loose puck off a shot from defenseman Victor Hedman.

* NY Rangers @ Columbus 4-2 - Brandon Saad scored in his debut with less than four minutes left. But the Rangers answered with three goals in 1:17 and defeated the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Oscar Lindberg tied it with 2:36 remaining, and Kevin Hayes slipped one past goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky from the right wall 17 seconds later for a 3-2 New York lead. Mats Zuccarello, who scored the Rangers' first goal, got his second with 1:19 left. Columbus fed off the energy of the crowd and played a physical game from the start. But Zuccarello gave New York a 1-0 lead with 44 seconds remaining in the first period when he stole the puck from Columbus center Gregory Campbell and beat Bobrovsky with a backhand after being hit in the corner prior to making the play. Cam Atkinson tied the game 10:59 into the second. New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist stopped the first 16 shots but was beaten on a backhand-forehand move by Atkinson. The assist went to former New York forward Brandon Dubinsky, who swiped the puck from falling former Columbus forward Derick Brassard and stretched a pass across two lines to spring Atkinson. Saad put the Blue Jackets ahead 2-1 with 3:50 left in the third period after Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh was called for delay of game. Saad, who was acquired June 30 in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks, took a pass from defenseman Ryan Murray and made a great first impression. The Blue Jackets, who led the NHL last season with 508 man-games lost to injury, lost center Alexander Wennberg in the first period when he sustained a concussion after being checked by Rangers left wing Chris Kreider.* Toronto @ Detroit 0-4 - Justin Abdelkader gave Detroit a 2-0 first-period lead. He scored a power-play goal 1:15 into the game, 11 seconds after Toronto left wing Joffrey Lupul went off for hooking. Abdelkader put in the rebound of a shot by Johan Franzen. Abdelkader's second goal came at 8:20. He beat Bernier with a turnaround forehand from the slot after taking a pass from Larkin. Playing 4-on-4, Larkin made it 3-0 scoring off the rush on a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle. Abdelkader completed his hat trick 3:54 into the period. He beat Reimer with a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle off the rush. Howard made two outstanding saves in the first period, stopping Nazem Kadri, who broke in alone after a toe-drag move on defenseman Jonathan Ericsson, less than two minutes into the game, and center Shawn Matthias, who was left alone in front, with a little more than five minutes to go. Detroit defenseman Kyle Quincey knocked a rolling puck off the goal line and out of the crease late in the first period. Larkin, from the Detroit suburb of Waterford, Mich., is the first teenager to play for the Red Wings since Jiri Hudler (19) in 2003-04. The last teenager to see significant playing time for Detroit was Jiri Fischer, who played 52 games in 1999-00 as a 19-year-old. Blashill was born in the Detroit suburb of Southfield, Mich., and grew up in Sault Ste. Marie. Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier made six saves before being replaced by James Reimer after allowing Larkin's goal 20 seconds into the second period. Reimer made 12 saves.
There was a video tribute to Babcock on the scoreboard about halfway through the first period.
"It was nice of them to do. I wish they wouldn't have to do that. I don't coach their team anymore. I'm glad this is all over with." Babcock said.
