Tuesday, October 13
* Florida @ Carolina 4-1 - After an early goal from Nick Bjugstad, the Panthers seized control of the game, and then used two goals 50 seconds apart in the third period, including rookie Connor Brickley's first NHL goal. The Panthers got on the board at 2:01 of the first period following a Hurricanes turnover. Eddie Lack, making his debut in the Carolina goal, tried a clearing pass, but it was knocked down in the right circle by Brandon Pirri. Moments later, Brian Campbell set up Bjugstad in the slot for a wrist shot over Lack's glove. Bjugstad had the only goal through two periods despite a total of seven minor penalties. Neither team's power-play units were clicking; Carolina had six shots on four power plays, and Florida had two on three opportunities. Elias Lindholm scored at 12:06 of the second period to tie it 1-1. While the Panthers waited to find their scoring touch, the defense made Montoya's night manageable; he faced 15 shots through two periods. The big break came at 12:18 of the third in the form of Brickley's first career goal. Brickley drove the net to score on the rebound of Dmitry Kulikov's backhand centering pass from the right-side boards. Brickley, playing his third game in the League, appeared to have his first goal in the second period, but an inadvertent whistle denied the goal. Aleksander Barkov scored 50 seconds later to make it 3-1 after Jaromir Jagr's shot trickled through the pads of Lack, who made 26 saves. Jussi Jokinen scored an empty-net goal for the final margin. Most of the Hurricanes' shots came from the perimeter, and they didn't get to the net for second chances.

* Tampa Bay @ Detroit 1-3 - It was the first game between the Lightning and Red Wings since Tampa Bay won their 2015 Eastern Conference First Round series in seven games. Nyquist opened the scoring with a power-play goal with 2:08 left in the second period, beating Bishop with a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot. It was Nyquist's first goal of the season. Zetterberg scored from the high slot to make it 2-0 at 8:25 of the third period. It was his second goal. Abdelkader also screened Bishop on that goal. Zetterberg has seven points (two goals and five assists) in three games. Callahan pulled the Lightning within a goal with 8:57 left. He beat Howard with a one-time slap shot from the top of the right circle. It was Callahan's second goal and the first Howard allowed this season. Quincey scored an empty-net goal with less than two minutes left.
Red Wings defenseman Mike Green made an outstanding defensive play by diving and knocking the puck away from J.T. Brown at the center red line to prevent a breakaway with a little less than three minutes remaining in the second. Johan Franzen was a late scratch. He missed the second half of the 2014-15 season after sustaining a concussion. Franzen, 35, played in the first two games this season. Franzen was replaced in the lineup by forward Landon Ferraro.

Ottawa @ Columbus 7-3
The Blue Jackets are off to the worst start in their 15-year history following a 7-3 loss to the Senators at Nationwide Arena. This comes after a 15-1-1 record to end the 2014-15 season. Seven players scored for Ottawa and defenseman Erik Karlsson had a career-high four assists. The Senators rallied three times to take 4-3 lead after two periods when Mika Zibanejad took a feed from Bobby Ryan and wrapped the puck around goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky with 2:39 left in the second. Jean-Gabriel Pageau extended the lead 75 seconds into the third. Mike Hoffman scored nine minutes later and Ryan had an empty-net goal with 4:05 remaining. Ryan and Mika Zibanejad each and had a goal and two assists. Kyle Turris had a goal and an assist and Mark Stone two assists. Craig Anderson made 37 saves. In the first 30 minutes, Columbus got goals by Brandon Saad, Boone Jenner and Brandon Dubinsky, but each time the Senators responded with goals from Marc Methot, Milan Michalek and Turris. Holding a lead has been a problem for the Blue Jackets; they led for a total of 74 seconds in the first three games. Against the Senators, Saad gave Columbus a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game, but Methot tied it 3:39 later. The Blue Jackets' other leads lasted 2:46 and 4:58.

Saad has three goals, all on the power play. He tied his career high for power-play goals set with the Chicago Blackhawks in 78 games in 2013-14. He had two power-play goals in 82 games last season with Chicago. Saad also was critical to Ottawa's first goal when he redirected Methot's shot from the left point past Bobrovsky, who had 21 saves and gave up five goals on the first 16 shots he faced. Bobrovsky has not played well, but the support in front of him has been missing. Even though the Senators controlled the third period, coach Dave Cameron didn't feel the lead was safe until Hoffman's shot from the high slot made it 6-3 with 10:48 to play. The Blue Jackets have been outscored 20-9 in their four games. They know they let a chance to win slip way over the final half of the game. Senators forward Clarke MacArthur sustained an upper-body injury in the second period and did not return.
