NHL Results - Fri, Jan 16, 2015

Vancouver @ Carolina 3-0 - Riley Nash missed an open net from a tight angle, but it was Miller's only misstep. He was particularly strong in the first period, stopping Alexander Semin at close range and later getting just enough of Patrick Dwyer's wrist shot that leaked wide of the post. The Canucks countered the hard-charging Hurricanes in the second with quick passes out of the defensive zone. Vancouver scored at 6:18 on a Carolina miscue. Justin Faulk fumbled a Vancouver pass in the neutral zone, allowing Derek Dorsett to get a step on him and beat goalie Cam Ward over his glove. Vancouver pushed the lead to 2-0 on Shawn Matthias's eighth of the season at 12:57. Jannik Hansen chipped the puck into the neutral zone, where Matthias gathered it and skated in alone on Ward before making a deke and finishing on the forehand. Alexandre Burrows took a stretch pass from Ryan Stanton, got behind the Carolina defense, and scored on a snap shot for a 3-0 lead at 16:49.
NY Rangers @ Columbus 2-1 - Staal and Kreider scored less than five minutes apart for a 2-0 Rangers lead before Scott Hartnell drew the Blue Jackets to within a goal at 3:16 of third. Hartnell scored his ninth goal after taking a stretch pass from Ryan Johansen, who has a point in 12 straight games for the longest active streak in the NHL. Sergei Bobrovsky was also given an assist, the fourth of his career, after he robbed former Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash and the puck went to Johansen on the transition. An apparent New York goal with 1:26 left in the third was waved off on the ice, and video review was inconclusive in determining whether Kevin Klein contacted the puck with his stick above the crossbar. Klein's shot hit Bobrovsky, then the rebound went into the net off Hartnell. New York took a 1-0 lead when Staal scored his second of the season after Columbus left wing Matt Calvert lost his stick and Klein kept possession in the zone. Klein passed the puck to Stepan, who found Staal in the left circle for a shot that went through traffic. On the next goal, Stepan moved the puck ahead to Kreider on the fly at the Columbus blue line for a breakaway. Kreider beat Bobrovsky with a backhand past the goalie's outstretched left pad at 10:10 for his ninth goal.
Washington @ Nashville 3-4 - Barry Trotz was in Nashville as the opposing coach for the first time since being fired by the Predators after last season. He won 557 games with them in 15 seasons. A tribute video to Trotz was played during the first timeout in the first period. The crowd responded with a standing ovation, and Trotz responded with a wave, whilst fighting back tears. Jones gave the Predators a 1-0 lead at 16:16 of the first period. He created a shooting lane from the point and snapped a puck that went off Holtby into the net. Neal gave Nashville a 2-0 lead 1:50 into the second period on a tap-in goal. Victor Bartley's shot deflected off Mike Fisher onto Neal's stick. Alex Ovechkin got the Capitals within 2-1 on a one-timer from the left faceoff circle. Karl Alzner made the pass that Ovechkin blasted from a tough angle to beat Nashville goaltender Carter Hutton. Ovechkin scored again, on a power play at 6:18 of the second period, to tie the game 2-2. Mike Green passed the puck to Ovechkin in the faceoff circle, and he slapped it past Hutton for his 24th goal of the season. Marcus Johansson gave the Capitals a 3-2 lead 2:38 into the third period on a power-play goal. The forward had multiple chances in the crease and was finally able to jam the puck past Hutton's pad. Mattias Ekholm tied the game 3-3 with 4:29 remaining in the third period with a one-timer on a power play. Seth Jones delivered a pass to Ekholm in the right faceoff circle that he was able to shoot past Holtby. James Neal scored with 1:40 left in the third period to give the Predators a 4-3 win. Neal forced a turnover on the forecheck by Matt Niskanen and beat goaltender Braden Holtby for his second goal of the game.
Winnipeg @ Chicago 4-2 - The Blackhawks made it 1-0 on a goal by Brandon Saad 53 seconds into the game, but couldn't build off the early momentum. Andrew Ladd assisted on Winnipeg's first goal, scored by defenseman Zach Bogosian at 10:46 of the first to tie it 1-1, and scored into an empty net to seal it in the third. Little and Bogosian had assists for two-point games. Forward Blake Wheeler and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien, who played for the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup-winning team in 2010, each had two assists for the Jets, who lost forward Mathieu Perreault to an upper-body injury late in the second period. Blackhawks rookie forward Teuvo Teravainen scored the first goal of his NHL career at 12:43 of the third to make it 3-2. One that Hutchinson didn't save was Saad's less than a minute into the game. Scored with a backhand from the right circle, the goal could've signaled a bad night for the Jets. Instead, Bogosian tied it 1-1 almost 10 minutes later with his third goal.
Physical play highlighted the opening period. The Jets and Blackhawks spent a combined 36 minutes in the penalty box in the first and racked up 48 penalty minutes in the game. Neither team scored in the second, but more rough play at the end of the period knocked Perreault from the game. After he and Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith exchanged slashes, Keith gave Perreault a shove near the boards. Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo then cross-checked Perreault in his left arm. Perreault, who didn't see the crosscheck coming, didn't return. Carcillo and Winnipeg center Mark Scheifele got matching cross-checking minors, which carried over to the third. The stalemate continued until a holding penalty on Blackhawks center Andrew Shaw at 8:56 of the third led to Little's goal. After heading to the back side of the crease, Little tapped in a feed from Bogosian at 9:31 for the go-ahead goal. Thorburn tipped a shot by Adam Lowry past Crawford at even strength 28 seconds later to make it 3-1. The goal turned out to be the game-winner because of Teravainen's goal with 7:17 left in regulation.

New Jersey @ Anaheim 1-5 - The Sucks got goals from Lindholm and Silfverberg in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Silfverberg tapped in Andrew Cogliano's wraparound at 5:08 of the second to put the Sucks up two goals, ending his 12-game scoring drought. Lindholm scored on a wrist shot at 3:16. He took a drop pass from Beleskey after Rickard Rakell hit Beleskey in stride with a cross-ice pass from the boards. New Jersey managed a 1-1 tie at first intermission even though it was outshot 15-5 in the opening period. Martin Havlat scored on a sharp-angled shot that went through Bryzgalov's skates on the power play at 15:12. Corey Perry scored his 19th goal, his fourth in four periods, at 4:09 of the first period when his pass to Maroon glanced off Schneider's pads and into the net. Maroon ended a 17-game scoring drought at 16:27 of the third to put Anaheim up 4-1.
