NHL Results - Wed, Jan 07, 2015

Washington @ Toronto 6-2 - A coaching change by the Maple Leafs did not achieve the immediate desired results. The Maple Leafs fired Randy Carlyle on Tuesday and named Peter Horachek coach on Wednesday. Horachek spent 10 years as an assistant with the Predators under Capitals coach Barry Trotz and was coach of the Florida Panthers for 66 games last season. The Maple Leafs got the first three shots on goal, but it was the Capitals who scored with their first shot. Marcus Johansson broke hard to the Toronto net and his high shot hit the bar at the back of the net and quickly deflected out at 5:10. The Maple Leafs tied it 1-1 at 4:49 of the second period when left wing Daniel Winnik tipped a low shot from the point by defenseman Cody Franson past Washington goalie Braden Holtby for his second goal of the season, first since the 10th game (Oct. 31). The Capitals took a 2-1 lead with a shorthanded goal at 6:20. Jay Beagle beat Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner to a loose puck in the Toronto zone and then hit the trailer on the play, Eric Fehr, who scored his 12th goal of the season. Washington made it 3-1, 1:38 later when Brooks Laich scored his fifth of the season after Fehr won a faceoff in the Toronto zone. Maple Leafs defenseman Roman Polak displayed some nifty stick-handling to keep the puck in the Capitals zone and passed to Leo Komarov, who relayed the puck to Trevor Smith at the side of the net. Smith tapped in his first of the season at 16:08. The Capitals went back up by two 42 seconds later when Johansson scored his second of the game, 12th of the season, two shy of his career high. Fehr scored his second of the game at 11:20 of the third period two seconds after a penalty to Komarov expired. Fehr's sharp-angle slap shot went off the post past goalie Jonathan Bernier. Washington's Alex Ovechkin scored an empty-net goal at 19:34 to extend his streak to four games. It was his 20th goal of the season.

Detroit @ Calgary 3-2 - Starting goalie Karri Ramo left the game at 10:11 of the second period because of an apparent injury after colliding with Flames defenseman Raphael Diaz when he left his crease to play the puck. He stopped 12 of 13 shots. Detroit beat Hiller on its second shot against him when Abdelkader's cross-slot pass skipped over Calgary defenseman Dennis Wideman's stick and right to Zetterberg, who lifted his 10th goal over a sprawled Hiller to put the Red Wings up 2-1 with 2:32 remaining in the period.
With Calgary forward Josh Jooris called for hooking, Abdelkader hit the post on his initial attempt, but he had time for another swipe and knocked in his 11th goal 2:03 into the period to extend the Detroit lead to two. The Flames pulled back within one with a shorthanded goal 3:10 later. With Joe Colborne serving two minutes for hooking, Backlund took a pass from Paul Byron and slid a backhand under Detroit goaltender Petr Mrazek for his second of the season. It was Backlund's first game since Oct. 28; he had surgery to correct an abdominal strain in November. Calgary almost tied the game at 9:08 when Matt Stajan tipped TJ Brodie's wrist shot from the point, but the puck hit the post, bounced off Mrazek's back and trickled along the goal line before going wide of the net.
With Hiller pulled for an extra attacker, the Flames thought they had tied it with 1:20 remaining, but the goal was waved off immediately with Curtis Glencross in the crease and Mrazek without his mask. Calgary beat Mrazek before he had a chance to settle into the first period. Streaking down the wing, Raymond fired a shot that hit Mrazek up high. Raymond corralled the rebound, darted behind the net and tucked in a wraparound for his sixth goal at 2:27. David Jones earned an assist on Raymond's goal. Jones was expected to be a healthy scratch, but was inserted into the lineup when Jiri Hudler's wife, Hannah, went into labor with the couple's first child. Backlund also had an assist on the goal.
Three opportunities on an early power play following Raymond's goal gave the Flames an 8-1 edge in shots 6:30 into the game. Detroit scored on their next one. Breaking into Calgary's zone, Sheahan darted around Flames defenseman Deryk Engelland before lifting a shot over Ramo's glove to tie the game 1-1 at 7:58.

NY Rangers @ Anaheim 4-1 - Brassard opened the scoring when he beat Bryzgalov with a slap shot from the left circle at 9:10 of the second period during a delayed penalty. It extended his goal-scoring streak to three games. Nash, made it 2-0 when he tipped in a shot by defenseman Kevin Klein at 2:32 of the third, after Klein intercepted a clearing attempt by Sami Vatanen in the high slot. The puck hit the shoulder of Sucks goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and fluttered into the net. Anaheim pulled to 2-1 on Beauchemin's power-play goal at 10:09 of the third with Derek Stepan serving a delay-of-game penalty for shooting the puck over the glass. His long slap shot might have been deflected by New York forward Carl Hagelin; it was one of the few miscues by a tight Rangers defense that kept Anaheim in check for most of the night. Zuccarello made it 3-1 with a goal off defenseman Francois Beauchemin's giveaway with 5:32 left. Moore hit the empty net with 2:14 remaining. The Rangers got their first win in Anaheim since Dec. 16, 2008. They have won road games against Anaheim, the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks in the same season for the first time in franchise history.
