NHL Results - Sun, Mar 01, 2015

Los Angeles @ Winnipeg 2-5 - The Jets scored three goals in a 9:27 span in the second period, including two from captain Andrew Ladd, to defeat the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 at MTS Centre on Sunday. Midway through the third period, Cheveldayoff acquired forward Lee Stempniak in a trade with the New York Rangers for forward Carl Klingberg. Stempniak joins left wing Jiri Tlusty, who the Jets added from the Carolina Hurricanes on Feb. 25, as recent additions to the Winnipeg lineup. Drew Stafford scored his 11th goal for Winnipeg. Carter’s 19th goal in the second period tied the game 1-1. But Winnipeg goals from Tyler Myers and Ladd 42 seconds apart gave the Jets a 3-1 lead. Ladd’s second of the game made it 4-1. Carter’s second goal with 5:11 left in the game made it 4-2 before Jets forward Blake Wheeler scored an empty-net goal with 55.3 seconds remaining finished the scoring. Winnipeg’s second line opened the scoring 6:34 into the game. Tlusty stole the puck on a reverse play from Los Angeles defenseman Robyn Regehr behind Quick’s net and worked the puck into the slot, where Stafford jammed it into the net. Jake Muzzin’s outlet pass helped set up the Kings’ tying goal in the second period. Muzzin reached Tyler Toffoli in the neutral zone that set up a 3-on-2 rush before Carter snapped a left-side shot past Hutchinson at 7:18. Myers broke loose from Los Angeles captain Dustin Brown deep in the Los Angeles defensive zone before stepping into the right circle and beating Quick’s left glove with a low shot through Adam Lowry’s screen at 10:43 for his sixth goal. With the teams playing 4-on-4, Winnipeg’s Bryan Little drove to the net. Little’s shot hit the post and bounced into the crease, and Ladd scored his 21st goal on a rebound past Quick at 11:25. Ladd broke open the game with 43.5 seconds left in the second period with a snap shot that bounced off Quick’s left glove. Ladd has four goals and three assists in his past seven games. Ladd won the Stanley Cup in 2010 with the Chicago Blackhawks, and he has thrived while the Jets attempt to reach the Playoffs for the first time since 2007 when the franchise was known as the Atlanta Thrashers.
Tampa Bay @ Florida 3-4 - Jagr had his first multipoint game since Jan. 3. His goal was the 717th of his career and tied him with Phil Esposito for fifth on the NHL's all-time list. Florida led 4-1 before Tampa Bay mounted a late comeback with goals by Stamkos at 8:31 and by Johnson at 17:16. Jagr, acquired Thursday in a trade for two draft picks, opened the scoring at 10:24 of the first period after Stralman deflected Huberdeau’s pass on a 2-on-1 and the puck slid to the slot. Trailing the play, Jagr fired a quick shot that beat Bishop high to the glove side. Stralman tied the score at 12:08 with a high sharp-angled shot from the top of the left circle. Barkov scored to make it 2-1 Panthers when he poked home a rebound while being knocked to the ice after Bishop stopped Jagr's close-range shot. Boyes ended a 17-game drought with his goal at 17:00 of the second, and he was the benefit of a lucky break. Boyes was behind the net when his pass bounced in off the inside of Bishop's blocker. Ekblad made it 4-1 with a power-play goal at 4:18 of the third with his one-timer from the top of the left circle deflected off the knee of Tampa Bay defenseman Jason Garrison.
Toronto @ Washington 0-4 - After the Capitals regrouped in the neutral zone, Ovechkin cut toward the net, beating Reimer from the slot with a wrist shot 33 seconds into the first period. It was Washington’s fastest goal to start a game this season. With the goal, Ovechkin clinched the seventh 40-goal season of his 10-year NHL career, breaking a tie with Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr for the most among active players. He became the 17th player in NHL history to accomplish the feat. Ovechkin is now tied with linemate Nicklas Backstrom, New York Islanders forward John Tavares and Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek for the League lead with 65 points. In the second period, Reimer stopped Brooks Orpik’s slap shot, but kicked the puck toward Ovechkin, who backhanded the rebound past him at 5:30. One minute later, the Capitals received a power play when Roman Polak tripped Ward. In search of a natural hat trick, Ovechkin fired two shots and missed another. Perhaps Toronto’s best opportunity to score came at 6:42 of the third period when Richard Panik collected Dion Phaneuf’s rebound and hit the goal post with a wide-open net. As play continued, a frustrated Panik slammed his stick on the glass. Johansson scored on the power play at 9:14, stuffing in a cross-crease pass from Troy Brouwer for his career-high 15th goal. Ward scored an empty-net goal from the neutral zone at 15:07. Sunday, the Capitals acquired forward Curtis Glencross from the Calgary Flames for a second- and third-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. With the NHL Trade Deadline approaching at 3 p.m. ET on Monday, the Capitals are encouraged by the additions to the roster.
