Vancouver @ Buffalo 3-6 - The Sabres overcame the loss of their top-two scorers and ended a five-game home losing streak. They played without Zemgus Girgensons and Tyler Ennis because of injuries. Torrey Mitchell’s second goal, his fifth of the season, came with 7:17 left in the third period and gave the Sabres a 4-3 lead. Mitchell scored off a rebound from a Matt Moulson shot that bounced off the skate of Canucks defenseman Alex Biega. The puck went right to Mitchell, who put it past Canucks goalie Eddie Lack, who was out of position.
Mitchell opened the scoring in the first period after a give-and-go with Moulson on a 2-on-1 against Yannick Weber. Mitchell received a pass from Sabres captain Brian Gionta behind Dan Hamhuis that started the 2-on-1. Mitchell passed to Moulson, who gave it back to Mitchell for his first goal since Nov. 22, a span of 28 games. Brian Flynn’s fifth goal with 1:32 left gave Buffalo a 5-3 lead. Flynn took a pass from Chris Stewart after Stewart beat Lack to the puck on a play in the Canucks zone. With Lack out of position, Stewart passed to Flynn, who scored into an empty net. Gionta scored an empty-net goal with 1.6 seconds left that made it 6-3. Andrej Meszaros gave the Sabres a 3-2 lead 4:46 into the third period. Meszaros took a slap shot from the faceoff circle to the right of Lack and went over his shoulder. Daniel Sedin made it 3-3 with his 14th goal 7:27 into the third. He received a pass from Henrik Sedin and took a wrist shot that went over Neuvirth’s glove hand. The goal and assist extended the point streaks of Daniel and Henrik to eight games. The Sabres and Canucks matched goals in the first and second periods. Mitchell and Canucks forward Shawn Matthias scored 1:02 apart in the first, and Stewart and Canucks forward Jannik Hansen each scored in the second. Stewart’s goal came on a breakaway 8:59 into the second period. His shot was initially stopped by Lack, but crossed the line when Canucks defenseman Adam Clendening attempted to get back to help. After video review, it was determined the puck went fully across the goal line.
Phoenix @ NY Rangers 3-4 - The Rangers were down 3-1 after the first period after giving up two power-play goals, including one on a 5-on-3, to Sam Gagner. Mark Arcobello scored 41 seconds into the game on an uncontested shot. Stempniak scored 5:33 into the second period and Kreider scored a power-play goal to tie the game 3-3 with 11.3 seconds remaining in the second. Stempniak gave New York a 4-3 lead with 2:14 remaining in the third period, and the Rangers killed a 6-on-4 power play for the Coyotes in the final 1:21 of the game. The sequence of events that led to Kreider's game-tying power-play goal all fell in the Rangers' favor and left goalie Mike Smith and coach Dave Tippett confused and angry. It started with 21 seconds remaining, when Derick Brassard wasn't called for what could have been a double-minor for high sticking Andrew Campbell. Brassard's stick got up into Campbell's face and drew blood. As Campbell sat hunched over on his knees holding his face, Rick Nash played the puck with a high stick in the slot, resulting in a faceoff in New York's zone with 18.8 seconds remaining. At this point Campbell went to the bench for repairs and Tippett let the officials know how he felt about the non-call. Antoine Vermette won the faceoff back to Connor Murphy, but he couldn't hold the puck in at the right point, allowing a breakaway for Kreider. Smith made the initial save, but Kreider kept with the play, found the puck back on his stick immediately, and used his backhand to score. Smith reacted by smashing his stick across the left post, breaking it in half. He received a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, putting the Rangers on the power play, with 1:49 of that time running into the third period. They didn't score on the power play, but they held the puck in the zone and generated five shot attempts over the final 1:37 of the power play. Smith said his anger wasn't directed at the officials for not calling the high stick, but instead at his team for not making the proper plays. Arcobello essentially passed the puck to Kevin Hayes in his defensive zone. Hayes found Stempniak in the slot, Smith made the save on his first attempt, but Stempniak scored on the rebound. The Coyotes had a power play with 1:21 remaining, when Martin St. Louis was called for hooking. They made it a 6-on-4 by pulling Smith, but Talbot made three saves in the final seconds to preserve the win.
Montreal @ Columbus 5-2 - Subban and Markov scored to sandwich the Dubinsky goal during a 2:36 span early in the first to give the Canadiens a lead they would not relinquish. Montreal jumped ahead on Subban's 12th goal of the season, his first in 16 games, 1:49 after the opening faceoff. It was the Canadiens' third shot of the game. Dubinsky tied the score 54 seconds after Subban's goal with a rush down the right wing and a wrist shot under the crossbar for his eighth goal. Markov was then set up by David Desharnais at 4:25 for his eighth goal. Markov has three goals and eight assists in the past 11 games. Pacioretty scored at 14:36 of the first period to put the Canadiens ahead 3-1. He scored five goals in three games against the Blue Jackets this season. De La Rose scored his first goal in his 12th game with a redirect of a Brandon Prust shot at 5:33 of the third period for a 4-1 Canadiens lead. Columbus got the goal back when rookie right wing Marko Dano pounced on a rebound 2:20 later for his third goal to cut the Montreal lead to 4-2. De La Rose scored into an empty net with 17 seconds left in the game to seal Columbus' fourth straight loss. Columbus made two trades Thursday, including a deal that sent injured right wing Nathan Horton to the Toronto Maple Leafs for right wing David Clarkson. Minor-league forward Adam Cracknell was traded to the St. Louis Blues for future considerations.
Philadelphia @ Toronto 2-3 - The Flyers outshot the Maple Leafs 16-7 in the first period, but Toronto held a 1-0 lead on Phil Kessel's 23rd goal of the season with 2:25 remaining. Kessel outraced Nicklas Grossmann for a loose puck and then beat goaltender Rob Zepp with a 20-foot snap shot. Tyler Bozak made it 2-0 at 5:33 of the second period when he broke in alone and his shot went past Zepp, off the crossbar and in. James van Riemsdyk made a blue line to blue line pass to Bozak, who managed to sneak quietly behind the Flyers defense. The goal came on Toronto's eighth shot, one of two the Maple Leafs took in the second period. The Flyers responded by replacing Zepp with Steve Mason. Phaneuf returned to the lineup after missing 12 games with a hand injury and scored a power-play goal 1:22 into the third period. The shot from the right point was his third goal of the season. Philadelphia captain Claude Giroux made it 3-1 at 11:10 of the third with a one-timer past Bernier. The goal, on a power play, was his 18th of the season. Brayden Schenn scored his 12th of the season 3:17 later on a power play on a rebound to make it 3-2.
Chicago @ Florida 3-0 - Teravainen, considered one of Chicago's best prospects, opened the scoring 3:08 into the game after a turnover deep in the Florida zone. Teravainen took a backhand pass from Andrew Shaw near the right faceoff dot and skated toward the middle before quickly firing a wrist shot that beat Luongo to the short side. The Blackhawks had a great chance to pad their lead late in the first period when they had a 5-on-3 for 1:22, but they could muster little in the way of chances after Hossa hit the crossbar with a slap shot early in the two-man advantage. Saad made it 2-0 at 3:07 of the second despite not getting a clean shot off on his one-timer off a feed from Duncan Keith. His off-speed shot fluttered past Luongo. Campbell hit the post with a slap shot midway through the third period. Jonathan Huberdeau missed an open net from a sharp angle with about two minutes left after Luongo was pulled for an extra attacker. Jonathan Toews scored an empty-netter with 46.8 seconds remaining, and Marian Hossa had two assists. Chicago played its first game without Kane, who is expected to miss 12 weeks after he sustained a broken clavicle Tuesday. Kane was injured when he slammed into the boards after being pushed in the lower back by Alex Petrovic. The Panthers defenseman was booed by the many Blackhawks fans at BB&T Center every time he touched the puck Thursday.
Minnesota @ Nashville 4-2 - Nino Niederreiter gave the Wild a 3-2 lead at 9:48 of the second period. He took a pass from center Charlie Coyle and beat Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne on the stick side with a point-blank shot. Niederreiter scored an empty-net goal with 1:39 remaining in the third period. It was his 21st goal. Erik Haula gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead with 2:25 left in first period on a one-timer from the point that beat Rinne on the stick side. Justin Fontaine and Kyle Brodziak had assists on Haula's sixth goal. Mike Fisher scored 16 seconds into the second period to tie the game 1-1. His one-timer from the slot off a pass from Matt Cullen went off the post, off Dubnyk and into the net. Brodziak gave Minnesota a 2-1 lead at 7:12 of the second period on a one-timer off of a faceoff win from Haula. Brodziak beat Rinne from the left faceoff circle before the Nashville goalie was able to react. Craig Smith tied the game 2-2 at 8:31 of the second period on a breakaway goal. He took a pass from Fisher and made a backhand-to-forehand move to beat Dubnyk for his 20th goal of the season, sixth in the past seven games. Sean Bergenheim made his debut for the Wild after being traded from the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. He played on the top line alongside Mikko Koivu and Thomas Vanek. Nashville defenseman Ryan Ellis returned to the lineup after missing 21 games because of a lower-body injury. Ellis was paired with Seth Jones.
Ottawa @ Los Angeles 1-0 - Ottawa ended Quick's shutout streak at 142:44 when Mike Hoffman scored his 21st goal 1:40 into the third period. Zibanejad slipped behind the Kings defense on the right side and made cross-ice pass to Hoffman, who lifted the puck past an outstretched Quick. The goal was Hoffman's 21st, tying him with Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators for the most among rookies. The Kings went scoreless on four power plays but couldn't get a puck past Hammond. The Dwight King-Jeff Carter-Toffoli line combined for 13 shots. Ottawa had Curtis Lazar and Jean-Gabriel Pageau hit the post in the second, and the Kings had a goal waved off early in the period. The Kings killed their 17th, 18th and 19th consecutive penalties. Newly acquired defenseman Andrej Sekera did not play. He is expected to make his Kings debut against the Ducks in Anaheim on Friday.
