NHL - Jets - Round Up November 04-08, 2016

Jets @ Detroit Red Wings 5-3 - Friday, November 04, 2016

Brandon Tanev will never forget his first two NHL goals. He scored twice in the third period to give the Winnipeg Jets a 5-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. Tanev tied the game 3-3 with 7:36 left in the third period, and then made it 4-3 on a breakaway with 1:16 to go. Tanev, 24, was an undrafted free agent the Jets signed out of Providence College on March 30. He had one assist in 14 NHL games. The Jets trailed 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 against the Red Wings, a day after coming back from trailing 3-0 and earning one point in a 4-3 overtime loss at the Washington Capitals. Winnipeg was trailing entering the third period for the 10th time in 12 games and won for the third time. The Jets did it Friday missing seven regulars from the lineup because of injuries. Patrik Laine, Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers scored for the Jets (5-6-1), who won for the first time in four games. Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves. Luke Glendening, Henrik Zetterberg and Justin Abdelkader scored for the Red Wings (6-5-1), who are 0-3-1 in their past four games. Glendening gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead 3:04 into the first period. Laine tied it 1-1 at 15:30. Zetterberg gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead 9:40 into the second period when he hit a puck out of midair with his stick blade. The call on the ice was no goal, but after the officials huddled, it was changed to a goal. Video review supported the call that Zetterberg's stick made contact with the puck at or below the level of the crossbar. The Jets tied it 2-2 after a video review 2:01 into the third period. Scheifele shot the puck off the left post and then jammed at the rebound. Mrazek fell backward and covered the puck, and video showed the puck peeking out under Mrazek's back completely across the goal line. Abdelkader gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead 10:48 into the third.
* Tanev took a pass from Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien in the neutral zone, broke away behind Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson and scored the game-winner.
"He's more excited than I am. I don't know how it's possible." Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who grew up in the Detroit area and won in his first game at Joe Louis Arena, on teammate Brandon Tanev

"I think if we get in that situation we know it's not over until it's over. We've got the character and the heart in this room that we can pull a comeback." Scheifele said.

"The atmosphere here in the building, first time playing in Joe Louis and obviously scoring my first goal, was something incredible, something I'll remember for a long time," Tanev said.

"To get two and to have them be the difference in such an important game, it's a good payoff for him. I hope he takes all the confidence in the world from it that he can make those plays, and that'll be the key for Brandon. If he can play that game and have a bit of finish to his game, I mean, that was a great signing for us."
"Just watching the way those guys played with each other, that's as much fun as I've had behind the bench in a long time. It was a great win, a great, great win." Paul Maurice said.

Jets @ NY Rangers 2-5 - Sunday, November 06, 2016

The New York Rangers won their fifth straight game when five different players scored and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves in a 5-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Madison Square Garden. Kevin Hayes, Mats Zuccarello, J.T. Miller, Jesper Fast and Pavel Buchnevich scored, and Brandon Pirri and defenseman Kevin Klein each had two assists for the Rangers (10-3-0). The Jets outshot the Rangers 26-19. Patrik Laine and Mark Scheifele scored for the Jets (5-7-1). Connor Hellebuyck allowed four goals on 16 shots before being pulled late in the second period for Michael Hutchinson, who allowed one goal on two shots. New York scored four goals in the second to open a 5-2 lead, marking the fifth straight game the Rangers have scored at least five goals. The Rangers, who have outscored opponents 25-7 in the second, lead the NHL with 55 goals and a plus-26 goal differential in 13 games. Zuccarello gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead 10:02 into the second off a 3-on-1 break. Scheifele scored his seventh of the season off a scramble in the crease to tie it 2-2 at 12:02. The Rangers then got goals from Miller, Fast and Buchnevich in a span of 4:04 to go up 5-2.
Buchnevich scored his second goal of the season when he controlled the puck in the right circle and worked his way to the front of the net before lifting a shot over Hutchinson at 17:05. Laine scored his team-leading eighth of the season 10:45 into the first to tie it 1-1. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead when Hayes scored off a slap shot from the right point on a delayed penalty at 2:12.

"He does a lot more and he'll continue to do a lot more than just shoot the puck [hard]," Jets coach Paul Maurice said.
* Lundqvist made certain the Jets didn't generate any momentum late in the second when he stopped Nikolaj Ehlers on a breakaway with 1:45 left, one of his eight saves in the period.
"It wasn't the result that we came for. I think we played a strong first period but knew they were going to come hard in the second. They are maybe the best team in the League. We just didn't play our game in the second and I think we lost because of that." Laine said.
"Our goaltending is like our defense and forwards; we'll have some real good performances and every once in a while we'll have a rough one. The [goaltenders] have to wake up and come back to work [Monday]." Paul Maurice

Stars @ Jets 2-8 - Tuesday, November 08, 2016

Patrik Laine scored his second NHL hat trick to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the Dallas Stars 8-2 at MTS Centre. Laine, the No. 2 pick of the 2016 NHL Draft, leads the NHL with 11 goals in 14 games played. Laine gave the Jets a 2-0 lead at 8:46 of the first period, redirecting Ben Chiarot's point shot past Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen. His second goal gave the Jets a 3-1 lead at 6:51 of the second period. His initial tip was saved by Lehtonen, who couldn't save Laine's second attempt on the power play. Laine's hat trick came at 10:07 of the second period. Nikolaj Ehlers sprung Mark Scheifele on a 2-on-1, and Scheifele made a cross-ice pass to Laine, who finished to make it 4-1. Scheifele scored twice, making it 1-0 at 3:06 of the first period and then scoring on the power play at 19:20 of the second period for a 6-1 lead. He assisted on two goals and took over the NHL scoring lead with 18 points (nine goals, nine assists).

Stars Quotes
"Pretty much embarrassing from start to finish. We came in here and played a terrible game and that's what you get. It's pretty much rock bottom, I think. I don't think you can get any worse than that. We've all got to look in the mirror and figure out what we have to do to get better." Jamie Benn said.
"You can't spend any time on this. This was teamwide. I think our young guys who have been pretty well carrying the team, some of them struggled tonight. Our top couple of guys got caught in couple tough defensive situations, but it was teamwide. You've got to trash this and move on." Lindy Ruff
