The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 at American Airlines Center for their fifth straight win. Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks (8-3-1), and Corey Crawford made 31 saves. Richard Panik and Ryan Hartman also scored for Chicago. Brett Ritchie and Curtis McKenzie scored for the Stars (4-5-2), who play the Blackhawks at United Center on Sunday to complete the home-and-home. Panik scored on a rebound 11 seconds into the game to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. Kane and Jonathan Toews got the assists when Panik shoved a rebound past goalie Antti Niemi after a sharp-angled shot by Kane. Dallas tied it 1-1 at 7:21 of the first period when Ritchie scored with a wrist shot that went between Crawford's glove and body with Radek Faksa screening the Chicago goalie. McKenzie gave the Stars a 2-1 lead when he scored at 9:49 of the first period. Stephen Johns took a point shot that was stopped by Crawford, but McKenzie scored on the rebound. Gemel Smith got an assist for his first NHL point.
Hartman tied the game 2-2 at 2:59 of the second period on a slap shot during a delayed penalty. Kane one-timed a pass from Artem Anisimov into a half-empty net on the power play to make it 3-2 at 7:40 of the second period. The assist extended Anisimov's point streak to 10 games. Niemi made 29 saves. Dallas center Jason Spezza left the game in the second period with a lower-body injury. Coach Lindy Ruff said Spezza will miss a "little bit of time" and the Stars will have to recall a forward from the American Hockey League.
"It was nice," Toews said. "We want to start games strong. It gets you going a little bit more confident."
* Crawford stopped Tyler Seguin's backhand with 5:25 remaining in the first period to keep Chicago within a goal. Jamie Benn set up the chance with a spinning backhand pass. Seguin made a couple moves but couldn't get it past Crawford's blocker.
* Chicago went 1-for-6 on the power play but converted for the game-winning goal in the second period. Anisimov wasn't able to get off a shot from the front of the net, but he got it across the slot to Kane, who easily scored past Niemi.
* Dallas had an opportunity to tie the game late when Marcus Kruger was called for high sticking with 1:49 remaining. The Stars pulled Niemi and had a 6-on-4 advantage for the rest of the game, but they couldn't beat Crawford.
"You don't want to be in that situation at the end, but our guys played it really well," Crawford said. "They stayed patient, especially with the extra man on for them. Our PK has been really confident of late. That was another solid win for us."
* Stars forward Jiri Hudler (illness) missed the game and isn't expected to play Sunday. … Blackhawks forward Andrew Desjardins (foot) was taken off injured reserve Saturday and could make his season debut Sunday.
Stars Quotes
"We've got to finish a few of those plays. Hopefully have the same type of energy. I thought the first and third period we had real good energy." Stars coach Lindy Ruff on what they need to do in the second half of the home-and-home
Hawks Quotes
"It was a great play by [Anisimov] at the net, finally came out on the weak side there. We've had some timely goals and been playing well at 5-on-5, and that's been carrying over into our special teams."
"I don't think anyone realizes we're on a little streak like that. We're just focusing on trying to improve every single day. Know that every day, whether we win or not, we always look to the things we want to improve on." Jonathan Toews said.
"It makes all the difference in the world. When you have a guy in front, screening the goalie, I think it's a way different game as a goalie when you have someone there. … He has a lot of skill around the net, and that was a good play there." Corey Crawford on Artem Anisimov's net-front work
Stars @ Blackhawks 3-4 OT - Sunday, November 06, 2016
Marian Hossa made up for an uncharacteristic error for the Chicago Blackhawks, who won their sixth straight game at United Center. Hossa's giveaway in overtime nearly cost the Blackhawks, but he made amends by scoring with 28.7 seconds left for a 4-3 victory against the Dallas Stars. Hossa beat goalie Kari Lehtonen with a slap shot from the high slot to win it. It was his 1,100th NHL point and was scored 1:41 after Chicago killed a 4-on-3 power play for Dallas (4-5-3). Chicago goalie Scott Darling, in his first start since Oct. 22, made four saves in overtime among his 32. Three came during Dallas' final power play, including a lunging right-skate save at 1:37 to rob Patrick Eaves.
Stars rookie center Gemel Smith scored the first two goals of his NHL career. He tied it 3-3 with 1:20 left in the third period after the Stars had pulled Lehtonen for an extra attacker. Tyler Seguin also scored for the Stars, and Lehtonen made 29 saves. Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith had two assists, Toews had a goal and two assists, and Patrick Kane scored a goal to extend his point streak to four games.
* Hossa let out some frustration with his overtime goal. He slapped the puck past Lehtonen after Darling's save on Dallas defenseman Dan Hamhuis 11 seconds earlier negated his turnover at the other end of the ice.
"He made a great save on me. That was the look we wanted, and it just didn't go in. You always want those to go in, especially because it would have given us the extra point, but he made a [heck] of a save, and we've got to live with that." Eaves said.
"I had two or three giveaways [that shift]. That doesn't happen in a whole game. We killed the penalty in overtime, and [I was] getting a little cold sitting on the bench for a little bit longer. I jumped in there and had three giveaways, so definitely I was a little frustrated. But that was nice to end it that way." Hossa said.
The Blackhawks (9-3-1), who swept the Stars in a home-and-home set, trailed 2-1 to start the third period. They moved in front with two 4-on-4 goals 56 seconds apart. Jonathan Toews tied it 2-2 at 3:39 with a tip-in goal, and then he assisted on Artem Anisimov's goal at 4:35 to give Chicago its first lead at 3-2. The goal extended Anisimov's point streak to an NHL career-high 11 games. He also had an assist on Hossa's overtime goal. Anisimov has eight goals and nine assists during the streak, which is the longest in the NHL this season. His 17 points lead the League, and his eight goals are tied for the lead.
* Hossa let out some frustration with his overtime goal. He slapped the puck past Lehtonen after Darling's save on Dallas defenseman Dan Hamhuis 11 seconds earlier negated his turnover at the other end of the ice.
* The stakes weren't nearly as high, but Darling's save against Eaves in overtime was reminiscent of his post-to-post save against Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis in the third period of Game 1 in a 2015 Western Conference First Round. Darling's 6-foot-6 frame played a key role in each save. "It took every inch of me to get that one," Darling said. "Whoever passed it, I think it was [Jamie Benn], he had a good fake. I thought he was going to shoot it. He passed it across, and I just tried to get something over there. Luckily it hit me."
* Smith's first NHL goal was scored with a combination of speed and skill, but an unsung play by Hamhuis started it. Hamhuis cleared the puck to the neutral zone during a Blackhawks power play, and Smith chased it down for a breakaway goal.
* Toews' goal in the third period was a tip-in off a feed from Hossa, who got the puck off Keith's stretch pass. Hossa sent his pass between defenseman John Klingberg's legs right to Toews' stick near the net.
* The Stars recalled center Justin Dowling from Texas of the American Hockey League on Saturday and placed forward Jiri Hudler (illness) on injured reserve. Dowling was a healthy scratch. … Dallas played with seven defensemen. Patrik Nemeth, who had been scratched the previous three games, entered the lineup at left wing on the fourth line. … Chicago rookie forward Tyler Motte sustained a lower-body injury crashing into the boards in the second period and didn't return.
Stars Quotes
"I was thinking, 'Stay calm, stay calm, read the goalie, read the goalie.' I kind of lost the puck there and tried to pull it back, and luckily it went in." Stars rookie forward Gemel Smith on scoring his first NHL goal on a breakaway"He made a great save on me. That was the look we wanted, and it just didn't go in. You always want those to go in, especially because it would have given us the extra point, but he made a [heck] of a save, and we've got to live with that." Eaves said.
Hawks Quotes
"[Eaves] probably thought he had a goal no matter what and put it along the ice. Scotty's foot comes out of nowhere. That was a huge one." Jonathan Toews"I had two or three giveaways [that shift]. That doesn't happen in a whole game. We killed the penalty in overtime, and [I was] getting a little cold sitting on the bench for a little bit longer. I jumped in there and had three giveaways, so definitely I was a little frustrated. But that was nice to end it that way." Hossa said.
