Metallurg Nk v Avangard 2-3 SO
Andrei Kareyev has big skates to fill as goalie at Metallurg Novokuznetsk. The Siberian club nurtured the talents of Sergei Bobrovsky, who went on to great things in the NHL and the international arena. More recently, Ilya Sorokin, currently starring for CSKA Moscow and team Russia, also emerged from Kuznya’s youth system. But Kareyev is showing signs of becoming a worthy successor to those two. Today, for the second time this season, he made 50 saves in a game. The first time, on Sep. 9, it was enough to beat Slovan. This time, though, it forced a 2-2 tie with Avangard. Kareyev added two more saves in overtime to set a new KHL record of 52 in a single game. A superb individual performance deserved to see Metallurg celebrate five consecutive wins for the first time since 2008, but it wasn’t to be. Instead Avangard spoiled the party with a shoot-out win thanks to Maxim Pestushko. But the leader of the Chernyshev Division did not have everything its own way, despite the huge number of shooting chances created. Metallurg led twice in the second period, Kirill Semyonov beating Dominik Furch with Kuznya’s first shot on target of the frame and Ignat Zemchenko scoring on the power play. Avangard hit back both times through Pestushko and Valentin Pyanov. Even in overtime, the home team might have nicked it but Furch denied Alexei Razumov a big chance.
Ugra v Barys 2-4

Two goals from Nigel Dawes paced Barys to a victory that moves it into a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Dawes opened the scoring in the fourth minute and wrapped it up with 23 seconds left as Barys won its second match in a row to move up to eighth place with 53 points from 38 games. The visitor didn’t get everything its own way, though. Evgeny Lapenkov tied the game in the second period and the start of the third saw Nursultan Belgibayev and Pavel Varfolomeyev trade goals within a minute of one another. But Alexander Lipin made it 3-2 in the 49th minute and Ugra had no further answers.
