NHL - Stars - Round Up December 10-13, 2016

Stars @ Philadelphia Flyers 2-4 - Saturday, December 10, 2016

The Philadelphia Flyers found something that worked on their power play against the Dallas Stars and used it to propel them their eighth straight victory.
Brayden Schenn scored three power-play goals, including the game-tying and game-winning goals, when the Flyers defeated the Stars 4-2 at Wells Fargo Center. Schenn completed his second NHL hat trick trick with 2:15 remaining in the third period. Jakub Voracek's shot from the right side hit players in front, and Schenn dove and scored on the rebound. Schenn also had three goals against the Calgary Flames on Feb. 29, 2016. The play in which Schenn scored his third goal was similar to the ones that led to his first two goals, both off plays from the right side by Voracek. At 17:18 of the first period, Schenn cut through the high slot and tipped Voracek's shot between Simmonds' legs and past Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen to make it 1-1. At 16:12 of the third period, it was almost the same play, with Schenn cutting through the slot to redirect Voracek's pass to tie the game at 2-2. Voracek had a goal and three assists for the second straight game. He's the first Flyers player with back-to-back four-point games since Eric Lindros on Dec. 31, 1997 and Jan. 3, 1998. Steve Mason made 21 saves for Philadelphia (17-10-3), which has won eight straight for the first time since Jan. 6-19, 2002. Devin Shore had his first two-goal game for Dallas (11-12-6). Lehtonen made 18 saves. Shore's second goal put the Stars ahead 2-1 at 10:32 of the third period, but two penalties later in the period proved costly. Defenseman Jamie Oleksiak was called for cross-checking at 15:06, and center Tyler Seguin for high-sticking at 17:03. Voracek closed the scoring with an empty-net goal. He has 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in his past eight games. Shore put the Stars ahead 1-0 at 7:30 of the first period, and gave them a 2-1 lead in the third when he pushed a puck under Mason and inside the right post.
* Schenn's first goal was his nicest. He cut through the high slot before making a redirection on a shot which went in the net.
* Schenn put himself in perfect position before scoring his third goal, completing his hat trick in the third period.
* Gostisbehere said his right hand was OK after getting hit by a Jordie Benn shot at 7:58 of the second period. He didn't play in the final 4:54 of the third period and said he had X-rays, which were precautionary. Gostisbehere had an assist on Schenn's first goal to extend his point streak to four games. … Stars defenseman Dan Hamhuis played in his 899th NHL game.
"I think we knew we had to stay out of the penalty box. We took that last penalty and it put us in a bad place. We talked about it before the game. If you are going to be careless, it will cost you." Lindy Ruff
"We played a good game 5-on-5 and lost it with untimely penalties. I had a bad penalty there. You could say they had a couple of good looks on the power play or we have to find a way to be better on the kill." Seguin said.

Stars @ Hawks 1-3 - Sunday, December 11, 2016

Scott Darling made 23 saves in his fifth straight start and the Chicago Blackhawks wrapped up a four-game homestand with a 3-1 win against the Dallas Stars at United Center. Marian Hossa, Artem Anisimov and Artemi Panarin scored for the Blackhawks (18-8-4), who played without goalie Corey Crawford, center Jonathan Toews and defenseman Brent Seabrook. Chicago begins a three-game road trip at the New York Rangers on Tuesday. Devin Shore scored a goal and Kari Lehtonen made 24 saves for the Stars (11-13-6), who lost 4-2 at the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. It was Dallas' third straight loss against Chicago, all this season. Shore gave the Stars a 1-0 lead at 1:25 off a 4-on-2 rush by scoring his third goal in two games. Hossa tied it 52 seconds later with a wrist shot from above the left faceoff circle.
Anisimov gave the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead at 12:30 with his 12th goal, which was scored when Stars defenseman Stephen Johns knocked a loose puck off Anisimov's left leg into the net. Chicago made it 3-1 on Panarin's power-play goal at 10:03. After drawing a slashing penalty on Stars forward Jason Spezza at 9:30, Panarin scored his 11th goal off a one-timer from the bottom of the left faceoff circle.

* Panarin's goal in the third provided the Blackhawks with a 3-1 lead off a sharp angle to the short side of the net. Defenseman Duncan Keith fed him a pass and Panarin's one-timer went between Lehtonen's glove and right pad. "I wanted to see it again," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "It was a pretty amazing angle. It was an amazing shot … that he can do."
* Darling went post-to-post at 3:44 of the third period to stop a one-timer by Shore during a Stars power play. It preserved a 2-1 lead for the Blackhawks.
* Hossa's goal at 2:17 of the second period tied it 1-1.
* Toews skated for the first time in a week, but missed his ninth straight game. … Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak served the first of a two-game suspension for an illegal check to the head. ... Dallas forward Jiri Hudler played for the first time since Nov. 1 and defenseman Johnny Oduya played for the first time since Nov. 19. … The Blackhawks flew Eric Semborski and his wife, Kaitlyn, in for the game. Semborski was Chicago's emergency backup goalie in a 3-1 loss at the Flyers on Dec. 3, the day of Crawford's appendectomy.

Stars Quotes
"We've got a lot of catching up to do. We put ourselves in a tough spot, but no reason why we can't turn this around. We've got to find a way to dig deep here and give ourselves a chance to get back in this." Jamie Benn said.
"This will be the season for us, I really feel, going back home where we've played pretty well. (We) haven't played that well on the road, and we've got to try to build some momentum." Lindy Ruff
Hawks Quotes
"This [is] definitely a good test of what the team can do without key players. It's hard to replace guys like that, all three of them, but I think with the little things, guys doing baby steps, those [young] guys get opportunities to play more and they're taking advantage of it. That's good for the future, when everybody's going to be back." said Hossa
"That's a good, high-powered hockey team over there, and we did a really good job defensively tonight. Helped me out big time." Scott Darling

Anaheim Ducks @ Stars 2-6 - Tuesday, December 13, 2016

The Dallas Stars scored five goals in the third period and avoided a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks at American Airlines Center. Dan Hamhuis, Adam Cracknell, Patrick Eaves, and Jamie Benn all scored in a span of 6:43 after the Ducks had taken a 2-1 lead early in the third period.
Antti Niemi made 34 saves for the Stars (12-13-6). Niemi made his first start since Dec. 1 after Kari Lehtonen started five straight games. Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry scored for Anaheim (15-10-5), which won its previous three games.
Stephen Johns gave Dallas a 1-0 lead at 13:22 of the second period on a shot through traffic, but Getzlaf tied the game with his third goal of the season at 15:36. Perry made it 2-1 at 1:08 of the third period with a power-play goal off a feed from Getzlaf. Hamhuis tied the game and scored his first goal with the Stars at 5:41 of the third when he finished off a pass from Jamie Benn on the power play. Cracknell then gave Dallas a 3-2 lead at 6:33. The goal was reviewed for a potential high stick by Devin Shore, but it was ruled the puck hit Perry's stick before entering the net. Eaves made it 4-2 at 10:51 with an assist from Jiri Hudler, his first with the Stars. Dallas scored again at 12:24 when Jamie Benn deflected a pass from his brother, Jordie Benn, past Ducks goalie John Gibson, who was then relieved by Jonathan Bernier. Gibson allowed five goals on 24 shots. Bernier made two saves in relief. Radek Faksa scored into the empty net with 6:03 remaining to give the Stars a 6-2 lead.
"I don't have as many as Devin, so I'll take them when I get them," Cracknell said. "I think it was an important goal for us to go ahead. Our line (has) been playing great and I think we just keep getting rewarded for doing the right things."
"Jamie made a great play," Hamhuis said. "It wasn't very hard for me to put that in after a great pass."
"When we're on our game, we score on those chances we had today," Ducks forward Rickard Rakell said. "Two chances on the 5-on-3 and (we) didn't score on them. It's tough, but we've got to keep building."
* Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak served the second game of a two-game suspension. He will be eligible to return to the lineup Thursday. … Ruff said forward Curtis McKenzie missed the game because of an upper-body injury.

"I kept it quiet. When you get to this age, they aren't that fun anymore." Dan Hamhuis on his 34th birthday
"I thought it was a good sign for our team to be so resilient to come back in the third. It's a process. We just want to keep doing the right things over and over. It's hard to score pretty goals in this league now. It's a matter of percentages and being in their end more and funneling pucks to the net." said Hamhuis.
"Excellent. [Niemi] played a great game for us. You've got to give him a lot of credit for staying ready. … Antti gave us a great game tonight, which allowed us to finish this one off." Lindy Ruff said
