SM liiga - Pelicans v HIFK 4-3 - Saturday, December 03, 2016
The Pelicans won a thriller against HIFK. After sharing Six goals during regulation, it took eight rounds of penalties to find a winner.
The Pelicans took an early lead when Justin Hodgman set up Defenseman henri Heino at 4:40. But, the visiting team from Helsinki, hit back with two quick goals early in the second period. Teemu Eronen and Oliwer Kaski both found the net 50 seconds apart to give HIFK the lead.
However, the team from Lahti were not behind for long. A further 34 seconds had elapsed before team captain Antti Erkinjuntti set up Iikka Kangasniemi, who was playing in his first game back after a lengthy layoff through injury. Heino also got an assist on that goal.
With the end of the second period drawing near, HIFK restored their lead when Arttu Luttinen scored. That looked like being enough to take the points and to round off a miserable week for the Pelicans but no. With jus over three minutes left in the game. Erkinjuntti and Juhani Tyrvainen combined to set up Justin Hodgman to tie the game.
We no further goals in overtime, it was onto the shoot out. Both teams missed their first seven attempts, with Hodgman and Kangasniemi missing three each. Roope Elimaki also missed one for the home side. While for HIFK Juuso Puustinen and Mikael Johansson missed two each. Mika Partanen, Teemu Eronen and Juhamatti Aaltonen also missed their chances.
Heading into round eight of the shoot out and Corey Elkins went first for HIFK. He too, like his team mates before him failed to find the net and so that left Antti Tyrvainen to seal the win for the Pelicans.
