Barys v Avtomobilist 4-0
Barys moved into the top eight in the East after recording its fifth straight victory, while Avtomobilist continues to struggle despite a change of head coach. The Kazakh team won 4-0 in Astana thanks to goals from Alexander Lipin, Brandon Bochenski, Nigel Dawes and Roman Savchenko. Henrik Karlsson made 23 saves for his shut-out.
Vityaz v Severstal 4-0
Two goals from Maxim Afinogenov helped Vityaz to a 4-0 victory at home to Severstal, lifting Valery Belov’s team into the playoff places in the West. Afinogenov struck twice early in the third period, adding to Miro Aaltonen’s opener. Alexei Kopeikin completed the scoring while Harri Sateri made 26 saves for his shut-out.
Dynamo v CSKA 4-5 SO
A topsy-turvy Moscow derby lived up to its billing as the game of the day as Dynamo staged a thrilling comeback before falling in a shoot-out. It took Dmitry Kugryshev to score twice on stand-in goalie Alexander Zalivin in a shoot-out to finally settle this tie, but the 26-year-old had nothing to be ashamed of after a big performance in his first ever KHL appearance. The Dynamo Balashikha goalie came into the game in the 12th minute with CSKA leading 3-0 and played a big role in steadying Dynamo after a poor start. While the Army Men continued to boss the shot count, he only allowed one further goal as the game finished 4-4 in regulation. Then Zalivin went on to make eight saves in the shoot-out, only losing out when Kugryshev beat him for a second time. At first CSKA seemed to be marching to a comfortable victory against its big city rival. The Army Men roared into a 3-0 lead inside 12 minutes. Alexander Popov opened the scoring in the sixth, but it was two goals in 33 seconds from Kugryshev and Kirill Petrov that really put Dynamo on the ropes. But the home team swapped goalies, bringing in Zalivin to replace Alexander Lazushin, and the pattern of the game changed almost immediately. CSKA ran into penalty trouble, giving Dynamo two extended five-on-three advantages, and the Blue-and-Whites capitalized with goals from Martins Karsums and Yegor Dugin to get right back into the game. There was more to come from the host: Daniil Tarasov tied the game late in the second before Andrei Kuteikin put Dynamo 4-3 up with another power play goal in the 47th minute. Suddenly it seemed that the Blue-and-Whites were on the verge of an improbable fight-back win, but the Army Men were not about to retreat just yet. Lokomotiv v SKA 1-7
SKA made it 14 wins in a row with one of its most impressive performances of the season to demolish Lokomotiv. The league leader wasted little time in seizing the initiative in this game, scoring after 56 seconds on a delayed penalty call. Alexander Barabanov got the goal with a well-placed wrist shot, leaving Loko under pressure from the off. Things didn’t much improve for the host as Slava Voynov and Vadim Shipachyov extended the lead to 3-0 inside 12 minutes. Loko called a time-out and posed more of an offensive threat in the latter stages of the opening stanza, but could make no impression on SKA’s commanding lead. The middle period was similar. SKA scored twice more thanks to Shipachyov and Nikita Gusev, with Shipachyov also creating Gusev’s goal. Loko was left staring at a huge defeat. And there was no let-up in the third: another Shipachyov assist sent Evgeny Dadonov through on the net to make it 6-0 before Ilya Kovalchuk’s shot deflected off home D-man Mikhail Pashnin for 7-0. A late power play goal from Vladislav Gavrikov got Lokomotiv on the scoreboard at last, but it was scant consolation at the end of a heavy defeat.
