NHL - Results - December 13-14, 2015

Sunday, December 13
New Jersey @ NY Islanders 0-4
The Islanders opened the scoring at 7:43 of the first period, one second after a boarding penalty to New Jersey's Kyle Palmieri expired. Zidlicky took a pass from Mikhail Grabovski and let go a straightaway slap shot that went through traffic and past Schneider. Tavares made it 2-0 with at 11:53 with his first point in five games. Stephen Gionta wiped out in his own zone trying to play Brock Nelson's backpass and put the puck on the stick of Kyle Okposo, whose shot-pass found Tavares at the right post for an easy tip-in. Martin made it 3-0 and ended Schneider's evening less than halfway through the second period. Calvin de Haan took a left-point slap shot that was deflected by Casey Cizikas and redirected into the net by Martin, who was credited with his third goal. The Islanders continued to dominate and extended their lead with 42.5 seconds remaining in the second period when Zidlicky capped a dominant shift by putting a slap shot from the right point past Kinkaid. Zidlicky became the first Islanders defenseman to score twice in a game since Andrew MacDonald did it against the St. Louis Blues on March 5, 2011.

Monday, December 14
Edmonton @ Boston 3-2 OT

On his overtime winner, Sekera beat the Bruins with determination after his first shot attempt from the blue line was blocked in front. He won the race to the loose puck, and then beat Bruins goaltender Jonas Gustavsson (21 saves) high to the stick side. Talbot was tested from the start. Bruins forward Brad Marchand skated in alone and tried a backhand that Talbot got with his glove 44 seconds into the game. He denied Matt Beleskey's wrist shot on the rush and Loui Eriksson on the ensuing rebound at 2:13. At the other end, it took 4:33 for the Oilers to get their first shot on Gustavsson. But Edmonton scored first, thanks to a fortuitous bounce. Gustavsson stopped Eric Gryba's shot from the blue line, but the rebound went off the end wall and right to Eberle waiting at the left side of the net. Eberle flipped in the puck at 8:29 of the first period for his seventh goal. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins put the Oilers ahead 2-0 when he scored his eighth goal with a drive to the net at 13:58. Zdeno Chara fell in the corner, and Eberle pounced on the puck before setting up Nugent-Hopkins. Adam McQuaid blocked Nugent-Hopkins' first shot, but he couldn't prevent his second attempt from finding the back of the net. Boston scored after Beleskey bulled his way to the net from the right wall against Darnell Nurse. Beleskey flipped the puck off Talbot's back, and when Talbot moved his right skate, he knocked the puck over the goal line at 13:29 to trim Edmonton's lead to 2-1.
Boston continued to heavily outshoot Edmonton in the third period until Marchand tied it 2-2 with his 15th goal. Marchand beat Talbot with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle on the rush high to the stick side at 15:22.

Tampa Bay @ Columbus 2-1

The Lightning dressed 11 forwards because of injuries and lost another in the first five minutes of the game, but still defeated the Blue Jackets 2-1 when Brian Boyle scored a shorthanded goal and goaltender Ben Bishop made it stand. Boyle broke a 1-1 tie at 6:13 of the third, converting a pass from Alex Killorn during a 2-on-1. Boyle has eight goals. Alexander Wennberg, whose miscue led to the Lightning's first goal, was victimized again when he lost the puck at the point to start the odd-man rush the other way. Matt Carle got a skate on a Scott Hartnell shot to deflect it out of the way when the goalie was out of position.
With 2:17 left during a scramble, Bishop was on his back and a shot by Dubinsky went three-fourths of the way across the goal line. Vladislav Namestnikov pushed the puck under Bishop for a faceoff. Marchessault, a former Blue Jackets forward, scored off a turnover by Wennberg at 11:11 of the second period to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. Wennberg felt pressure in the right corner and blindly threw the puck to the middle, where an open Marchessault scored on a one-timer for his third goal. Dubinsky made it 1-1 at 16:44 of the second after a pass by Matt Calvert from below the goal line. Dubinsky skated left to right across the crease and found an opening on Bishop with a backhand shot for his fifth goal and first in 11 games

Los Angeles @ Ottawa 3-5

The Senators jumped on the Kings early in the second period and took a 4-1 lead with three goals in 3:34. The Kings came back with goals by Toffoli, late in the second period, and Muzzin to make it 4-3 with 10 minutes left in the third period, but Zibanejad knocked in a rebound of a shot by Bobby Ryan at 12:11 to make it 5-3. Jamie McBain scored the only goal of the first period. The Kings took advantage of a poor line change by the Senators, and McBain skated down the right wing and beat Anderson to the stick side at 14:21. The Senators stormed the Kings net to start the second, and they tied it when Brayden McNabb fell along the left-wing boards in his zone and lost the puck to Zibanejad below the goal line. Zibanejad passed to Hoffman, unguarded in front, and he scored at 2:29. Turris scored his 13th goal when he took a pass at the top of the slot from Karlsson and scored on a rising shot at 3:58. Karlsson made it 3-1 at 6:03 with Ryan providing a screen in front. Hoffman scored his second goal of the game and 17th of the season to make it 4-1 at 14:34 when he worked a fine give-and-go with Curtis Lazar. The Kings got a lucky bounce and some life when Toffoli scored into an empty net on the power play to cut the Senators lead to two. With Anderson behind the net to play a puck off the glass, it caromed away from him, and Toffoli took advantage with 2:23 left in the second period. With Quick out of the net for the extra attacker, Hoffman had a chance at the Kings blue line for the hat trick with 55 seconds to go, but Drew Doughty slashed him.

Buffalo @ Detroit 2-1

Ryan O'Reilly and Johan Larsson scored 1:01 apart late in the third period to give the Buffalo Sabres a 2-1 win. Chad Johnson made 31 saves for Buffalo, including a save on Gustav Nyquist with 19 seconds left. Nyquist appeared to have an open net from the bottom of the right circle but dove across the crease to knock Nyquist's shot away. O'Reilly tied the game 1-1 with 4:14 left when he tipped in a shot from the point by Sam Reinhart. It was O'Reilly's 11th goal of the season. Larsson gave the Sabres a 2-1 lead when he put in a rebound with 3:13 left for his first goal of the season, ending a 30-game drought. Richards gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead 4:01 into the second period when he one-timed a shot past Johnson, high on the short side, off a cross-ice pass from Pavel Datsyuk. It was Richards' second goal of the season. Johnson denied Tomas Jurco on a penalty shot with 5:04 left in the second period after it was ruled that Mike Weber interfered with Jurco on a breakaway. Jurco came in and cut towards the left wing boards, slowed down, came back to the middle of the ice and tried to beat Johnson with a forehand shot. Datsyuk hit the goal post on his own rebound with 8:40 left in the second period.
