The Sabres scored first at 5:13 of the second period. Beleskey's clearing pass was blocked by Eichel and then Zdeno Chara's attempt to clear the puck was intercepted by Tyler Ennis. Krejci took two shots that Johnson saved before the Boston center batted the second rebound out of the air and into the net with a backhand swing. The Sabres soon stole the momentum.
Columbus @ Tampa Bay 2-5
Steven Stamkos scored two goals in a 32-second span of the second period to help the Lightning to a 5-2 win. Stamkos' first goal tied the game 2-2 at 6:21 of the second period. With the Lightning on a 5-on-3, Nikita Kucherov faked a shot from the right circle and passed to Stamkos in the slot, where he put a one-timer into the open side of the net with Blue Jackets goalie Joonas Korpisalo far out of position. The Lightning captain scored in the slot again 32 seconds later when he was able to size up Korpisalo and send a wrist shot through the five-hole for a 3-2 lead. Tampa Bay's power-play success continued later in the period when Nesterov scored his second goal of the season to give the Lightning a 4-2 lead. Justin Faulk was the trailer on a rush into the New Jersey zone; he took a pass from Eric Staal and snapped a shot from the high slot past Cory Schneider to break a 1-1 tie. Joakim Nordstrom scored his second goal of the season for Carolina with 3:14 remaining when he took a pass from Faulk and beat Schneider from above the left circle with a slap shot to make it 3-1. Rookie defenseman Brent Pesce also scored and Cam Ward made 19 saves for Carolina.
Each team had an excellent chance in the game's first minute. Schneider robbed Elias Lindholm on a wide-open wrist shot from the right faceoff dot 26 seconds after the opening faceoff, and after Staal took a slashing penalty nine seconds later, Ward stopped Palmieri's one-timer through traffic at the one-minute mark.
There weren't many scoring chances in the rest of the period. Schneider stopped Chris Terry on a rebound try with just more than seven minutes remaining, and Ward made a good save on Travis Zajac's wrister from the right dot with 3:45 remaining. The Hurricanes began to dominate play near the midway point of the second period, and took the lead at 9:57 when Pesce's wrist shot from the right point went through a screen by Andrej Nestrasil and past Schneider, who never saw it. Carolina nearly doubled its lead 32 seconds into the third period when Lindholm beat Schneider but hit the post. New Jersey got even at 1:18 when Palmieri came out from the post to Ward's right and scored on a wraparound. The goal was his team-leading 15th, a career-high.

The Kings scored three times in the first 6:23 of the third period to erase a 1-0 deficit, before the Coyotes tied the game 3-3, but Anze Kopitar won it 36 seconds into overtime. In overtime, Kopitar powered around Viktor Tikhonov, maneuver around sprawling goalie Louis Domingue and stuff a backhander into end empty net to get a four-game road trip through the Pacific Division off to a strong start. The Kings led 3-1 when Jake Muzzin took a five-minute major and match penalty for a hit to the head of Boyd Gordon at 13:20 of the third period.
It became a 5-on-3 advantage when Alec Martinez shot the puck over the glass for a delay of game and Phoenix capitalized. Ekman-Larsson took Mikkel Boedker's pass in the high point and waited for Shane Doan to set a screen in the slot. Quick wasn't able to track the wrist shot which found the far corner at 9:43. It stayed that way until, with Brad Richardson in the box for a delay of game penalty, Martinez found Doughty at the left face-off dot with a cross-ice pass and Doughty wound up for a shot that Domingue got a piece of but couldn't stop at 37 seconds. It was the third of six consecutive minor penalties call against the Coyotes. Pearson scored at 4:17 off a passing play from Marian Gaborik to give the Kings a 2-1 lead and Brown made it 3-1 after Nicklas Grossman took a slashing penalty for Arizona, taking a feed from Nick Shore to beat Domingue for his third goal of the year at 6:23.

Edmonton @ Vancouver 1-2 OT
Jannik Hansen left late in the third period after colliding face-first with the crossbar but returned to score his second goal of the game with 58.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Canucks a 2-1 win. Hansen, who had blood running down his forehead when he left with 1:04 left in the third period, still wasn't sure how many stitches he needed to close one of two horizontal gashes above and below the lump, but he never doubted his return. Hansen returned midway through the five-minute overtime. On his second shift, he took a pass from Matt Bartkowski, skated full speed into the Edmonton zone and beat Cam Talbot through the blocker side arm with a hard slap shot from the top of the right circle. Letestu took advantage of a turnover to open the scoring 7:05 into the first period after Radim Vrbata tried to juggle a puck out of the air to himself with his stick just inside his own blue line. Instead, the puck came to Lauri Korpikoski; he tipped it ahead to Letestu, who used Alexander Edler as a screen and beat Markstrom on the glove side from above the right hash mark. Hansen tied it 3:37 into the second period after a pretty pass from Henrik Sedin. Henrik took a pass from Daniel Sedin in the corner and carried the puck below the goal line before lifting a pass over Nikita Nikitin as he dropped to block it, and onto the stick of Hansen in the slot for a one-timer through Talbot's legs.
