DEL - Krefeld Pinguine - Week 1
The DEL season got underway this week and Krefeld Pinguine were in action twice. On Friday they claimed a 5-3 win, away to Augsburger Panther despite numerous players out with injury. This meant the Pinguine could only ice three lines but that didn't matter as the visitors raced into a 3-0 lead after only nine minutes. Two of the goals were on the powerplay with Defenseman Robin Weihager setting up both chances for Norman Hauner and Nick St. Pierre.
Thomas Supis had given Krefeld the lead in the fourth minute when Oliver Mebus found him with the puck. Andreas Driendl then added a fourth early in the second period after Kyle Sonnenburg and Herberts Vasiljevs set him up. Augsburger got a goal back within seconds but Krefeld responded just as quickly to take the lead back to four goals again. Weihager converting from a Yared Hagos pass. As the game wore on the Pinguine started to tire and that allowed their hosts to reduce the scorline with two goals in three minutes towards the end of the second period, but that would as close as they would get and Krefeld held on for the win.
The Pinguine returned home two days later but were rocked by an 8-3 loss to the Straubing Tigers. Krefeld were still without several players due to injury. Duba (hip), Pietta (thigh), Sofron (knee), Bishop (groin) and Meisinger (rehab) were all missing and made for a difficult encounter. The Tigers took a 6-0 lead by the 33rd minute and there was no coming back from that. Indeed the game was as good as over after just seven minutes when Straubing had already found the net three times.
The Pinguine didn't give up though and did get three goals back. Yared Hagos bagged a hat-trick of assists as he combined well with Christian Kretschmann. The latter scored the first on the powerplay from a Robin Weihager pass then sent Steve Hanusch through to make it 6-2. Hagos then passed to David Fischer to set up Martin Schymainski for the third goal, but Straubing scored two late goals to make it 8-2.
