Severstal v Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 4-3 SO
Pavel Buchnevich and Yury Trubachyov held their nerve in the shoot-out to give Severstal the points after a rollercoaster of a clash with Torpedo. The teams traded six goals and 81 penalty minutes in a hard-fought encounter that lifted the home team away from the foot of the table. Severstal may well wonder how it failed to take the win in regulation. Things could hardly have started out any better with Yury Trubachyov and Dmitry Kagarlitsky putting the host 2-0 up in the first period as Torpedo adapted to the loss of Vadim Khomitsky on a game penalty for interference. But it quickly began to go awry: Carter Ashton got one back before the first intermission and second-period strikes from Evgeny Mozer and Linus Videll had the visitor in front. Anatoly Nikontsev tied it up before Torpedo’s Vladimir Galuzin became the second player of the night to be expelled from the game as the action drifted towards overtime.
Jokerit v Dinamo Minsk 0-1
Dinamo goalie Jeff Glass was in fantastic form to deny Jokerit and turn the early-season form book upside down. Going into Wednesday’s game the Finns were unbeaten and the Belarusians had yet to taste victory, but a virtuoso performance between the piping changed all that. Glass, no stranger to impressive feats of defensive resilience in his KHL career, stopped 39 shots to silence the home offense. From the first minute to the last he was kept busy, but proved equal to everything Jokerit could throw at him, from odd-man rushes to individual raids on his net. Juhamati Aaltonen was denied six times, including a strong pad save late on when he was all alone with the goalie. At the other end Dinamo was forced to play on the counter but delivered a classic smash’n’grab goal in the closing stages. Ryan Vesce got the winner after pulling the puck back from behind the red line and seeing it deflect home off the skates of Henrik Karlsson. Karlsson had just blocked a shot from Nick Bailen but was caught out of position and paid the price as he scrambled back towards his crease at just the wrong moment.
