NHL - Stars - Traverse City Tournament v Detroit

Stars v Red Wings 4-5 - Monday, September 14

For the second straight game, Dallas Stars prospects couldn’t hold a 4-2 lead, and the end result is they will finish no higher than fifth place at the NHL Prospect Tournament in Traverse City, Michigan. The Detroit Red Wings scored three goals in a 10-minute span of the third period to wipe out that 4-2 deficit, defeat the Stars and advance to Tuesday’s championship game. The Stars, needing a regulation victory to win their division and advance to the title game, were tied 2-2 with Detroit heading into the third period. The Stars grabbed a 4-2 lead when Mattias Janmark set up goals by Jason Dickinson and Brett Pollock in the first 4:29 of the third. But the Red Wings cut the lead to one with a power play goal at the 7:41 mark. With Janmark playing without a stick and Dickinson hobbled after blocking a shot, Detroit’s Robbie Russo scored off a blast from the high slot to make it a 4-3 game. Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou then scored two goals 2:12 apart late in the period, the first coming with 4:33 left and the second with 2:21 remaining to put Detroit ahead for good at 5-4. The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Dylan Larkin 5:22 into the game, but Shore scored to tie it in the first and Janmark tallied in the second to put the Stars up 2-1. Detroit’s Evgeny Svechnikov scored with less than five minutes left in the second to tie the game. Philippe Desrosiers got the start in goal for the Stars, stopping 14 of 19 shots.
Devin Shore: “I thought we played really well. It was a tough game. You play to win, and we wanted to represent the Dallas Stars as a winning organization even in the prospect pool, and, unfortunately, we didn’t do that tonight. There are a lot of positives to build on. It’s early in the year, and guys are going back to different teams after a big game tomorrow. There’s something to build on today because I thought we played really well.”
