NHL - Results - November 04-05, 2015

Wednesday, November 04

Florida @ Anaheim 2-3 SO
Corey Perry scored his first goal of the season with 5.1 seconds remaining and Chris Stewart got the winner in the shootout at Honda Center. Perry's first goal in 12 games came during a man-advantage. It was the Ducks' fourth power-play goal this season. Perry nearly scored again at 3:07 in overtime, but was denied by Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo (37 saves). Rocco Grimaldi, who was raised about 20 minutes away in the Seal Beach community of Rossmoor, scored the first goal of the game. Grimaldi beat Andersen with a wrist shot from the edge of the circle at 5:01 in the second period, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The game remained tied until late in the period, when Erik Gudbranson scored at 17:57.

Thursday, November 05

Tampa Bay @ Buffalo 4-1
Nikita Kucherov's fifth goal of the season gave the Lightning a 3-0 lead with 1:40 left in the first period. Stamkos gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead 5:55 into the game. He received a pass across the attacking zone from Valtteri Filppula and shot a one-timer past Sabres goalie Linus Ullmark for his seventh goal. Tyler Johnson made it 2-0 with his second goal of the season with 8:25 left. He took a pass from Alex Killorn in the slot and his wrist shot beat Ullmark to his blocker side. The Sabres came out strong in the second period and outshot the Lightning 21-8. Sabres rookie Jack Eichel cut the lead to 3-1 with his fifth goal 4:21 into the second period. Eichel received a pass from Mike Weber and skated into the Lightning zone, spinning past defenseman Andrej Sustr into the slot and took a snap shot that got past Vasilevskiy low to his glove side. Victor Hedman scored an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left.
Boston @ Washington 1-4
Jimmy Hayes scored his fourth of the season and the first scored by Boston against Washington since March 29, 2014. It broke Holtby's shutout streak of 199:33 against the Bruins, who were shut out in their three-game series with the Capitals last season. Hayes scored a power-play goal at 12:47 of the first period to give Boston a 1-0 lead. Brett Connolly's shot bounced off the stick of Brooks Orpik and deflected off Hayes' right shoulder into the net for his fourth of the season. Ovechkin tied the game 1-1 at 17:27 of the first period. Evgeny Kuznetsov took the initial shot and Ovechkin swatted the puck past Rask from midair on a diving play for his seventh goal of the season. It was the 482nd of Ovechkin's NHL career, one away from tying Sergei Fedorov's record for most by a Russian-born player in the League. Laich gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 4:10 of the second period. Defenseman Dmitry Orlov took a hard shot from the point and the puck deflected off Laich's right skate in front of the crease for his first goal of the season. Carlson scored 7:21 into the second period on a 5-on-3, giving Washington a 3-1 lead and ending a four-game power-play drought. Carlson moved into Ovechkin's spot in the circle, and Ovechkin moved into the high slot. Nicklas Backstrom sent a pass across the crease to Carlson, who scored his third goal of the season. Alzner scored into an empty net with 1:50 left to give Washington a 4-1 lead.
NY Islanders @ Montreal 1-4
David Desharnais and Brendan Gallagher scored goals 1:33 apart in the third period. Dale Weise scored his team-leading eighth goal on a power play in the first period, and Tomas Plekanec hit the empty net with 2:03 remaining in the third. A fortunate bounce off linesman Michel Cormier led to Desharnais' tie-breaking goal at 6:22 of the third. Nathan Beaulieu's pass off the glass up the left side struck Cormier, holding up the puck for Canadiens left wing Tomas Fleischmann, who passed around Nick Leddy's sliding attempt to block his pass and set up Desharnais for a shot past Halak into the right side of the net.
Gallagher made it a two-goal lead at 7:55 when he deflected Max Pacioretty's shot past Halak for his sixth goal. Plekanec sealed it for Montreal with a backhand from the blue line for his third empty-net goal. Capuano got a visit from Cormier at the Islanders bench before play resumed after Desharnais' goal put Montreal up 2-1. Weise scored a power-play goal for a second consecutive game. His fifth goal in four games marked the 12th time Montreal has scored first in 15 games. The Canadiens are 11-1-0 when they get the first goal.
Okposo drew New York even with his fourth goal at 3:35 of the second, two seconds after a penalty to Pacioretty expired. Halak got an assist on the goal, when he left the puck for Johnny Boychuk behind the Islanders' net. Boychuk passed to Okposo, who drove the left side before cutting in to the high slot to put a wrist shot past Condon.

Philadelphia @ Calgary 1-2 OT
A shot from Johnny Gaudreau was stopped by Philadelphia goaltender Michal Neuvirth, but the rebound ricocheted off Backlund and bounced over the line to give Calgary their second win in their past seven games and the second in seven games on home ice this season. Philadelphia fell behind 1-0 at 4:40 of the first period. After serving a penalty, Jooris had a breakaway on Neuvirth, who made the initial pad save before Jooris slid his second chance by the Flyers goaltender to give the Flames the lead. The goal came after Mark Giordano and Jakub Voracek each hit goal posts in the opening minutes of the game. Raffl scored with 36 seconds remaining in the second with a shot that trickled through Ramo's pads and over the goal line to tie the game 1-1.

Flyers in typical dirty hit pose.

Columbus @ Los Angeles 3-2
There was no shouting or berating in the Columbus Blue Jackets' dressing room after a historically poor second period Thursday, to hear captain Nick Foligno tell it. Columbus did not have a shot on goal in an emotion-filled second, the first time in franchise history that the Blue Jackets were held without a shot in a period. But the Blue Jackets regained their poise, and Gregory Campbell scored the winning goal midway through the third for a 3-2 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center. Campbell's goal at 10:52 made it 3-1. He fired a wrist shot past goaltender Jonathan Quick off Jack Johnson's drop pass after Johnson carried the puck into the Kings' zone. That turned out to be the game-winner after Jeff Carter pulled the Kings to 3-2 with one minute remaining. Sergei Bobrovsky made 31 saves for Columbus, which is 4-3-0 under new coach Tortorella after it started the season 0-7-0. The Blue Jackets won at Staples Center for the first time since Jan. 7, 2012.
Columbus took a 2-1 lead into the third period despite being outshot 8-0 in a penalty-filled second. It marked the third time in franchise history that the Kings allowed no shots on goal in a period and was their fewest allowed in a period at home. The Kings allowed zero shots in a period in 1978 at the St. Louis Blues and in 2014 at the Anaheim Ducks in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The loss was the second for the Kings in their past 10 games. Defenseman Alec Martinez scored in the first period, and Tanner Pearson and Drew Doughty later hit the crossbar and post. The Blue Jackets went ahead to stay when Foligno's centering pass hit the leg of linemate Brandon Dubinsky and went into the net at 18:13 of the first period to put Columbus up 2-1. The play started as a dump-in and Foligno turned away from Los Angeles defenseman Brayden McNabb from behind the net. The Blue Jackets scored first when Cam Atkinson redirected Dubinsky's pass from the inner edge of the left circle past Quick at 6:22 of the first period. Martinez tied it when he scored a power-play goal at 12:47 on a slap shot from the left side to complete a good passing sequence. Bobrovsky might have been screened by Johnson, who bent down to block the shot. The Kings and Blue Jackets showed a heavy dislike for each other with a combined 20 penalties, two fights and numerous post-whistle scrums, including one involving Quick after the Kings goaltender slashed Columbus forward Scott Hartnell. Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin said the penalties in the second period further diminished whatever momentum they were creating.

Scott 'More Cow Bell' Hartnell: "We haven't had one of those games in a while. It felt like back in the '80s where everyone was chirping after the whistle. There was a couple of big fights. [Foligno] led us the way there, having a great fight against [Kyle] Clifford. We followed suit. We were in the battles. We were hard."
John Tortorella: "I liked the spirit of the team. They fought for one another. When someone was in trouble they jumped in. We were getting to their blue [line]. In the third period I thought we defended well and battled. Teams bumped up. In that type of game you're going to get bumped up, but it's satisfying because I thought they played the right way. It's the beginning of an identity."
Nick Foligno: "[Coach John Tortorella] came in and was really good. He kind of settled us down. I think our emotions got the best of us. Some heated play was going on, and I think he got our minds back on the game and said 'We've got [20] minutes to find a way to get this.' I thought the guys really re-focused."
