The San Jose Sharks had to wait only two days before getting a chance to avenge an embarrassing loss to the Edmonton Oilers. The Sharks took full advantage Tuesday at SAP Center. Joe Pavelski had two goals, rookie Barclay Goodrow scored his first NHL goal and the Sharks defeated the Oilers 5-2.
Logan Couture and Brent Burns also scored for San Jose (15-11-4). Jordan Eberle and David Perron had goals for the Oilers (7-16-5), who defeated San Jose 2-1 on Sunday at Rexall Place, snapping their 11-game losing streak and ending the Sharks' four-game winning streak. Antti Niemi was expected to start for San Jose, but Sharks coach Todd McLellan said he changed plans and went with Stalock after Niemi "took a shot" during the morning skate. Edmonton's Ben Scrivens, who gave up one goal in his previous two starts against San Jose, made 19 saves. The Sharks grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals by Pavelski and Goodrow, but Edmonton responded with goals by Eberle and Perron before the period ended. Couture and Pavelski scored in the second period, putting San Jose ahead 4-2, and Burns scored at 14:31 of the third period on a slap shot from above the right circle. Pavelski, who has a team-high 14 goals, gave San Jose a 1-0 lead with a highlight-reel goal at 4:33 of the first period. He took a pass from Joe Thornton in the right circle and scored on a spinning backhander that went over Scrivens' right shoulder. Goodrow made it 2-0 at 5:29. Third-line center James Sheppard got the puck along the left boards, moved toward the crease and sent a pass ahead to Melker Karlsson, who fired a shot from the crease. Scrivens stopped Karlsson's shot, but the rebound went to Goodrow, who buried it from close range. Karlsson, making his NHL debut, got an assist for his first career point. The Oilers capitalized on two Sharks mistakes to pull even. Eberle scored from the slot at 12:08 shortly after Leon Draisaitl intercepted Thornton's pass in the Sharks' zone. Perron tied it at 16:15 when he scored from the slot, capitalizing on defenseman Brenden Dillon's turnover in his own zone. Teddy Purcell intercepted Dillon's pass and quickly sent the puck to Perron, who beat Stalock for his fifth goal of the season. The Sharks surged ahead 4-2 early in the second period on goals by Couture and Pavelski. Couture redirected Scott Hannan's blast from above the left circle past Scrivens for his 12th goal of the season, giving San Jose a 3-2 lead at 6:14. Pavelski scored a power-play goal on a shot from the slot at 7:35, seven seconds after Edmonton's Steve Pinizzotto was penalized for holding John Scott's stick. Thornton sent a pass to Patrick Marleau, who was below the goal line to the left of the crease, and Marleau sent the puck to a wide-open Pavelski. The Sharks lost two players to injury. Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic took a hard hit from Edmonton's Tyler Pitlick late in the first period and did not return. With less than five minutes remaining in the second period, Sharks forward Mike Brown hit the boards hard after taking a run at Edmonton's Matt Hendricks. Brown hobbled off the ice and to the locker room with an apparent right leg injury. Karlsson also left the game late in second period and went to the locker room, but he returned early in the third period. Despite being shorthanded, the Sharks kept rolling. Stalock made back-to-back starts for the first time this season and made 25 saves, improving to 3-3-1.

Alex Stalock: "We looked at things that we needed to do differently. Tonight was good. I think for (Niemi) and I, we both have the same pregame skate routine when we play or we don't play. We stick to our ends and it's the same thing. It's good in that way, and then obviously finding out early, it helped."Todd McLellan: "Obviously [Niemi] good enough to back up. We'll see how he feels tomorrow. Al did a good job in recovering and played a good game for us. Vlasic was held out (for) precautionary type stuff, and we'll see how he is in the morning. (Brown) is a lower body and he's going to be out for a while."
Joe Pavelski: "We were ready to play and we got a couple of quick goals and the crowd gets into it and we feed off that. Obviously you'd like to continue with that. We could do a better job there but we come back out and re-establish things."
Barclay Goodrow: "We had a good cycle going. Honestly I can't remember exactly what happened. The puck just came out in front. ... I had a pretty full net to put it home. You just need to make sure you're paying attention on the bench. There are different lines going out all the time, different combinations. It was tough to lose those guys but I think everyone else stepped up and I think we played a pretty complete game tonight."
