NHL Results - Sun, Dec 14, 2014

Los Angeles @ Toronto 3-4 SO - Forward Joffrey Lupul scored the only goal of the shootout and goalie James Reimer made 33 saves through overtime for the Maple Leafs, who won their fifth game in a row. Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Santorelli and defenseman Cody Franson. Santorelli beat Quick on a wraparound and a high shot to the short side. Franson notched his fifth goal of the season with a low shot from the right point to the far side of the net. The Kings tied the game with two goals over 3:45 in the second period. Justin Williams had a puck hit him and as it fell to the ice, he shot it past Reimer at 16:02. Dwight King scored his third of the season with 14 seconds left in the period after a strong move to the net. Marian Gaborik gave Los Angeles a 3-2 lead at 1:02 of the third period. He took a pass from Williams and had a shot from close range that Reimer denied. Gaborik scored off his own rebound for his fifth goal of the season. Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk forced overtime with his 13th goal of the season at 8:49 on a tic-tac-toe play with Franson and Phil Kessel. With Toronto on the power play, Kessel saw Franson cutting in from the point and hit him with a perfect pass. Franson relayed the puck to van Riemsdyk in front of the Kings goal and he slid the puck past Quick.
Calgary @ Chicago 1-2 - The Flames learned the hard way at United Center on Sunday, when the Blackhawks earned a 2-1 win thanks to Brandon Saad's goal at 12:57 of the third period. Flames rookie forward Johnny Gaudreau lost an edge, lost the puck and seconds later Saad capped a 2-on-0 rush with a wrist shot that beat goalie Jonas Hiller past the glove into the upper left corner of the net. Passes from defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson and captain Jonathan Toews got him the puck for his seventh goal. Patrick Sharp scored Chicago's other goal on a power play in the second, Toews had two assists and goalie Antti Raanta earned the win with 23 saves. Sharp and Hudler each scored in the second. Hudler gave the Flames a 1-0 lead at 4:27 and Sharp capped a power play 4:16 later to tie it 1-1. Chicago's penchant for winning games in the third period is also healthy. A day after losing the late lead in New York, the Blackhawks got back to dominating the final period. They outshot Calgary 10-5 and controlled puck possession. Saad and Marian Hossa also spearheaded a great penalty kill early in the period to keep it tied 1-1
NY Rangers @ Edmonton 2-0 - Dan Girardi's first-period goal held up as the game-winner in the Rangers' 2-0 victory against the Oilers. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 16 saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season, the 55th of his career. Carl Hagelin scored into an empty net with less than a minute left to seal New York's third consecutive win. Girardi scored at 16:04 of the first period. He was looking for forward Mats Zuccarello in front and had the puck bounce off Oilers center Mark Arcobello's skate past Scrivens. The Rangers had a number of opportunities to extend their lead in the second. Their best fell to McDonagh on a rebound, but Scrivens was able to slide across and get his right pad out to make the save. In the third, the Oilers pressed for the tying goal. Taylor Hall came close when he lifted a shot from in close, but Lundqvist was able to hold his ground and get a shoulder on the puck. Hagelin scored into an empty net on a breakaway at 19:38 after a shot was blocked at the Rangers blue line with Scrivens on the bench for an extra attacker.
