Washington @ NY Islanders 4-1

Jason Chimera's 12th of the season gave Washington a 1-0 lead at 5:45 of the first period. His shot from the side of the net deflected off the stick of New York defenseman Adam Pelech and over goalie Jaroslav Halak's shoulder. Alex Ovechkin's 22nd goal of the season turned out to be the game-winner, a wrist shot from the right circle at 15:45 of the first period that gave Washington a 2-0 lead. Brock Nelson got the Islanders within 2-1 at 1:59 of the second period with his 14th goal. Holtby made five saves late in the second period with the Islanders on a power play, including point-blank stops on Anders Lee and Tavares to keep it 2-1. Schmidt scored his second of the season at 15:54, six seconds after an Islanders power-play expired, to give the Capitals a 3-1 lead. Nicklas Backstrom scored an empty-net goal with 2:42 left.

Florida @ Ottawa 3-2

The Senators had a wide edge in play before Smith scored at 12:01. Vincent Trocheck made it 2-0 right after the faceoff. Luongo made a big save on Kyle Turris seconds before Smith scored with a hard shot over Anderson's left shoulder. After the faceoff, Smith's strong forecheck forced a turnover and led to Trochek's goal at 12:09. McCormick, in his 10th NHL game, scored off a turnover at 5:38 of the second period to make it 2-1, his shot going in off the left post. Barkov scored his 12th goal to make it 3-1 at 7:30 of the third period after Jagr's pass to the front of the net bounced off the stick of  Fredrik Claesson. Michalek deflected a shot by Erik Karlsson at 9:54 to make it 3-2.

The Panthers' two goals in eight seconds were the quickest scored against the Senators; the previous record was 11 seconds, by the Winnipeg Jets in 1993.

Phoenix @ Calgary 2-1

Gaudreau put the Flames up 1-0 with his first point in five games. On the power play, he took a pass from Monahan and snapped a shot over a diving Domingue at 14:37 of the first period. Elliott scored 1:47 into the third period to break a 1-1 tie. He worked the puck back and forth with Anthony Duclair at the blue line before sending a shot through a crowd that hit Kris Russell and beat Ramo. Domingue made a pad save off Mikael Backlund at 4:07, stopped a Sean Monahan slap shot from the hash marks at 5:18, and got his blocker on Sam Bennett's shot off the rush at 15:43 to preserve the one-goal lead. Ekman-Larsson tied the game on the power play with 1:49 remaining in the first. Ekman-Larsson's point shot hit Josh Jooris' stick in the high slot and dribbled by a screened Ramo. Boyd Gordon swiped a loose puck at the top of the slot through Ramo's legs and off the post 3:18 into the second. An outstretched pad from Ramo stopped a rebound attempt from a patient Max Domi at 8:23, and Ramo capped the 12-save second with a glove save off Duclair on a 2-on-1 with 2:51 remaining in the period.

Toronto @ Los Angeles 1-2

The whirlwind trek of Vincent Lecavalier ended happily, and the Los Angeles Kings hope this is just the beginning of the good times. Jeff Carter scored the game-winning goal in the third period, and Lecavalier had an assist in his Kings debut. Carter tapped in Marian Gaborik's pass at 8:05 of the third period in his first game back since he missed five with an upper-body injury. Lecavalier fed Jake Muzzin from the boards, and Muzzin opened the scoring on a wrist shot at 2:53 of the third. Luke Schenn flew into Los Angeles in the morning and did not practice with the Kings after being acquired Wednesday in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers. Jonathan Quick made 25 saves, including point-blank stops on Brad Boyes and Nazem Kadri in the final three minutes with Los Angeles clinging to a one-goal lead. Quick's bid for his 41st NHL shutout, which would be the most by an American-born goalie in League history, ended when Peter Holland scored a power-play goal at 10:05 of the third. Lecavalier played 9:26 on the fourth line with Michael Mersch and Jordan Nolan. Schenn, paired with Christian Ehrhoff, played 15:59. He took a boarding penalty in the second period that was negated after 24 seconds by Boyes' high-sticking penalty. Roman Polak received a game misconduct for boarding Tyler Toffoli in the first. Toffoli briefly left the game. Referee Kelly Sutherland required medical attention at the end of the first period after he was struck high by Muzzin at the boards. Sutherland returned for the second period.
