Florida @ Boston 1-2 OT - Brad Marchand scored with 1:33 left in overtime at TD Garden. After the Bruins gained possession at center ice, Dougie Hamilton hit Marchand with a pass just outside the Florida blue line. Marchand gained the zone and eluded Panthers defenseman Dylan Olsen near the hash marks before he beat goaltender Roberto Luongo up high. Marchand assisted on Patrice Bergeron's goal in the second period. The line of Marchand, Bergeron and Reilly Smith has 10 points in the past three games. The Panthers had two of the best chances to take the lead in the third period; Vincent Trocheck and Erik Gudbranson each hit the post. The Panthers scored first in the second period. Jokinen one-timed a Brad Boyes pass from the high slot past Rask at 4:04. It took the Bruins 6:25 to land their first shot on goal in the second period, but eventually they answered the Panthers' goal. After Smith battled with two Panthers, Marchand grabbed the puck and fed Bergeron at the left dot. Bergeron's turnaround slap shot beat Luongo up high at 7:29. The Bruins showed a video tribute to dirty dog Shawn Thornton, who's with the Panthers after seven seasons in Boston. He received a standing ovation during the second television timeout for the number of bones he has broken of opponents over the years, not to mention the amount of concussions dished out too, before making things right with a helmet of fruit. Yes, a talentless goon, who truly deserves such appreciation.
Edmonton @ Philadelphia 1-4 - Flyers forward Michael Raffl left the game with 4:02 left in the third period because of a lower-body injury. He had blocked a Mark Fayne shot earlier in the period. Mason had a strong game. His best saves came in the third period when the Flyers were killing off two penalties. On the first Edmonton chance, he denied Nail Yakupov on a hard shot from the left circle then stopped David Perron on the left post. On the second power play, midway through the period, he made a great glove stop on Mark Arcobello next to the left post moments after Justin Schultz hit the same post with a low point shot. Voracek's two goals came off fortuitous bounces off Edmonton defensemen. Oscar Klefbom blocked Voracek's pass attempt from behind the net into the slot. The puck came back to Voracek, and he stuffed it between Fasth and the post to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead 3:59 into the game. His second goal came after Jeff Petry blocked a Michael Del Zotto shot and the puck bounced to Voracek in the slot; he scored before Fasth could set himself. Bellemare made it 3-0 early in the second. Nugent-Hopkins' beautiful end-to-end goal midway through the second got the Oilers within 3-1, but that was as close as they would get. Schenn made it 4-1 at 12:01 of the third on a strong play by his brother, Brayden Schenn. Brayden bumped the Oilers' Matt Hendricks off the puck behind the Edmonton net. As he was falling he pushed the puck out to Luke Schenn in the right circle, and the older of the Schenn brothers one-timed a shot past Fasth.
Calgary @ Washington 4-3 OT - Bouma flipped into the Calgary bench after missing an attempted check on Michael Latta in the opening minutes of the game, redeemed himself at 9:09 of the first period when he gave the Flames a 1-0 lead. Traffic in front of the Capitals crease deadened Kris Russell's shot from the right point, and Bouma was able to pivot inside, beating Mike Green and Braden Holtby to the puck for his third goal of the season. Backstrom tied the game 1:09 later and secured Ovechkin's record. Tom Wilson held off Granlund near the left corner, working the puck up to Ovechkin. Backstrom, in the slot, redirected Ovechkin's shot through Hiller's legs at 10:18. Midway through the second period, Giordano's fourth goal of the season gave Calgary a 2-1 lead. The Flames captain swiftly maneuvered to his backhand, evading Wilson and cutting into the slot uncovered to score at 10:20. The Capitals again responded quickly, this time in 43 seconds when Johansson's missed shot off the end boards clipped Hiller's left skate and trickled over the goal line. Ward gave Washington a 3-2 lead at 14:23 on a 5-on-3 power play. Hiller unintentionally aided the Capitals again by pushing the puck into the net with his left leg. The Flames scored on a fluky bounce of their own with 5:10 remaining. Johansson intercepted Granlund's centering pass, but his clearing attempt struck Troy Brouwer's right skate. With time expiring in regulation, Ovechkin chipped the puck past Dennis Wideman at the point, outracing the defenseman and finding Backstrom as he entered the offensive zone. Backstrom closed in and fired a pass to Wilson waiting near the edge of the crease, but Hiller extended to make a right-toe save to preserve the tie. Sean Monahan clinched the Flames' third straight victory in overtime with 42.2 seconds remaining, with a wrist shot set up by Josh Jooris on a weaving play.
Carolina @ Columbus 4-2 - Nick Foligno got his second goal of the game with 5:23 left when he skated out of the right corner and stuffed the puck past Carolina goaltender Cam Ward for his sixth goal. Ward denied Scott Hartnell from close range with a save off his right arm with two minutes left. The Blue Jackets pulled goalie Curtis McElhinney (33 saves) in the final minute but Eric Staal scored into an empty net with 12 seconds remaining. The Blue Jackets instead needed a spark trailing 2-0 on goals by Boychuk and Nash in the first period and got one when Carolina center Victor Rask was called for hooking with two minutes left. Foligno cut the deficit in half with 61 seconds remaining, taking a big rebound of a Ryan Johansen shot and burying the puck from the right circle before Ward could react. Faulk gave the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead seven minutes into the second period with a shorthanded goal. He stole the puck from Columbus defenseman Jack Johnson along the wall in the Blue Jackets zone and skated away with Alexander Wennberg in pursuit but the Columbus forward couldn't prevent Faulk from shoveling a shot that hit McElhinney and flipped over the goalie for his first goal. Hurricanes forward Jiri Tlusty left the game after a hit from Johnson with 13:02 remaining in the third period. He did not return.
St Louis @ New Jersey 1-0 - A power-play goal by Tarasenko at 4:55 was all goaltender Jake Allen needed in his second straight shutout, making 26 saves in the Blues' sixth straight victory. Tarasenko's game-winner came 17 seconds after Marek Zidlicky was whistled for holding Alexander Steen in the Devils zone. He took a feed from Jori Lehtera just outside the right circle before making his way to the faceoff dot and beating Cory Schneider on the short side. The 22-year-old Russian has seven goals and nine points in his past five games, and is responsible for seven of the Blues' 12 goals since Oct. 28. A scoreless first period was highlighted by several big saves. The Devils' best chance came at 3:46 when Michael Ryder took a pass from Patrik Elias in the slot and redirected a shot toward the right corner that was denied by Allen with his glove. The deflected puck landed on the netting at the top of the cage. Tarasenko, who finished with three shots on 27 shifts and 15:27 of ice time, had a chance at 6:50 when he stripped defenseman Damon Severson at the Devils blue line, skated in alone but was denied by Schneider with the right pad.
Chicago @ Montreal 5-0 - Jonathan Toews lining up with Patrick Kane provided the spark the Blackhawks needed to get their offense going. Toews scored his 200th goal and assisted on Kane's goal in the third to get his 450th point, and Corey Crawford made 28 saves. Toews tipped Duncan Keith's point shot past Montreal goalie Carey Price for a power-play goal at 11:19 of the first. Kris Versteeg scored his first of two goals in the game midway through second period to put Chicago up 2-0. Brad Richards made it 3-0 early in the third period on his second goal. Kane increased the lead to 4-0 at 12:31 with his fourth goal off a pass from Toews. Versteeg scored his second goal of the game, fourth of the season, with a backhand past Price at 14:46 of the third period to make it 5-0. Crawford made a big save at 2:41 of the first to keep the game scoreless when he stuck out his right pad to stop PA Parenteau's shot on Montreal's first power play. Price made a few incredible saves among his 27 stops on 32 shots, including an unbelievable second effort to deny Jeremy Morin the opening goal shortly before Toews scored to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. Referee Eric Furlatt signaled a delayed penalty on Montreal defenseman Alexei Emelin as Price turned aside Brandon Saad's backhand from the slot. Morin had an open net to shoot at from the left side on the rebound, but Price reached back with his stick to knock the shot into the air. The Canadiens goalie then lunged to bat the puck over the crossbar with his blocker. Chicago made the most of the ensuing power play. Toews scored his milestone goal when he set up in front of Price and deflected Keith's shot through the Montreal goalie's pads for his 449th point. Versteeg made it 2-0 on his third goal at 9:57 of the second. His shot from the right corner struck Montreal defenseman Rene Bourque's skate and went into the net. Price made another sensational save when he got a piece of Marian Hossa's shot on a power play in the second period. He then caught a break when Kane's shot from the right side went between his pads but wide of the left post. Richards deflected Patrick Sharp's centering pass by Price at 2:22 of the third to extend Chicago's lead to 3-0. Sharp left the game after taking a hit by Emelin. He was helped off the ice by teammate Niklas Hjalmarsson at 6:55 and did not return.
Detroit @ Ottawa 1-3 - Patrick Wiercioch's first goal of the season at 14:37 of the third period broke a tie and sparked the Senators to a 3-1 win at Canadian Tire Centre, but it was the start that set the tone. The Red Wings, despite being soundly outplayed in the first, tied the game 1-1 at 2:34 of the third period on Henrik Zetterberg's fourth goal of the season. The Senators were scrambling around their net after a shot by Detroit defenseman Danny DeKeyser was stopped by Anderson. The rebound went to an open Zetterberg in the slot and he put a backhand by Anderson high on the stick side. The Red Wings had a great chance to take the lead in the sixth minute of the third period after a giveaway by Karlsson resulted in a 2-on-1, but Anderson made a sprawling save on Detroit right wing Tomas Jurco. The line of Kyle Turris between MacArthur and Bobby Ryan helped the Senators get off to the good start in the first period with a couple of good chances and there were also some good shifts from the rookie line of Curtis Lazar, Mike Hoffman and Matt Stone. Turris had the Senators' best chance to score prior to Karlsson's goal when he had a shorthanded breakaway with Karlsson in the box three minutes into the second period. Turris got a breakaway when Zetterberg's stick broke and the latter went to the bench, but Howard stopped Turris' wrist shot with a glove save.
A minute into the second period, Turris fired the puck into the open net after Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith collided with Howard, knocking him down and into the Detroit net. It was ruled no goal by referee Brad Watson because Howard was injured on the play. After having two shots in the first period, the Red Wings created some chances in the second. Anderson stopped Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader with back-to-back saves after Turris' breakaway. Anderson made his best save of the second period after he gave the puck away behind the Ottawa net. The Senators goaltender scrambled back into position stop a shot by Detroit's Riley Sheahan in the 15th minute.
Nashville @ Winnipeg 1-3 - Power-play goals from Andrew Ladd and Mark Scheifele in the first 5:29 of the game built a 2-0 lead for the Jets. Blake Wheeler scored an empty-net goal with 1:40 left in the game.
Predators left wing Filip Forsberg, the NHL's leading rookie scorer at 12 points, ended Winnipeg's shutout streak at 161:17 with a goal late in the second period. 18 seconds after Nashville's Matt Cullen took an interference penalty, Ladd tipped Dustin Byfuglien's point shot past Hutton 2:53 into the game for his fifth goal. After Colin Wilson's hooking minor, Scheifele's rising wrist shot from the left circle slipped past Hutton's blocker at 5:29 for a 2-0 lead. Scheifele's second of the season broke a seven-game goal drought. Eight seconds after the Predators' first power play of the game ended, Forsberg scored his fourth goal when he squeezed a wrist shot from the left circle through Pavelec's pads at 16:17 to cut the Jets lead in half.
Vancouver @ Colorado 5-2 - Dorsett and Bonino scored on the Canucks' first two shots of the period 2:20 apart to give Vancouver a 3-2 lead, its first of the game. Dorsett tipped Dan Hamhuis' shot behind Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov at 2:27 and Bonino had an easy tap-in off Chris Higgins' pass at 4:47. Bonino scored his second goal and team-leading sixth of the season from a sharp angle at 9:16 after another pass from Higgins. The Canucks' comeback began when Sedin scored as time was winding down in the second period after the Avalanche were unable to clear the zone. The Avalanche took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from John Mitchell, who beat Miller to the glove side with the first shot of the game at 1:15, and from Jamie McGinn near the right post at 16:33 off a pass from Jarome Iginla. The Avalanche's lead could have been larger, but the Canucks killed off a double-minor to Kevin Bieksa for high-sticking Dennis Everberg in the first period and limited Colorado to four shots on five power plays for the game.
Toronto @ Phoenix 2-3 - Phoenix limited Toronto to four shots on goal in the game's first 28 minutes. Antoine Vermette made it 3-0 at 6:34 of the second period for the Coyotes, who are 4-2-0 at Gila River Arena and put in one of their best 60-minute efforts of the season. The Maple Leafs pushed hard down the stretch, but they couldn't make it all the way back. Toronto did force the action early, and penalties 54 seconds apart by Brandon McMillan and Erat gave the Maple Leafs an extended 5-on-3 power play. But the Coyotes killed off the penalties without allowing a shot and didn't allow another for the rest of the period, a span of more than 12 minutes. Lauri Korpikoski intercepted a pass by Toronto's Jake Gardiner behind the Maple Leafs net and slid a backhand centering pass to Gagner, who one-timed a shot over Reimer's shoulder to the short side at 10:29. The Coyotes made it 2-0 at 15:35 on another hardworking play. Erat collected a Martin Hanzal pass, steamed behind the Toronto net and put a backhand shot off the skate of defenseman Stephane Robidas and by the helpless Reimer. It was more of the same early in the second period. Toronto had one shot in the first eight minutes, during which Phoenix stretched their lead. Reimer stopped Vermette on the rush with a pad save, but Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk banked the puck off the end boards right to Vermette, who stuffed the puck behind Reimer at 6:34. It was Vermette's third goal, second in two games. The Maple Leafs finally got on the board at 9:24, making the most of 17 seconds of 4-on-3 power play time. After Kessel gathered in a faceoff win, Tyler Bozak set up Phaneuf for a one-timer that Smith never saw thanks to van Riemsdyk's screen. Smith made several good saves on the next Maple Leafs power play, stopping van Riemsdyk at one post and Bozak at the other on a rebound of a Gardiner shot. Toronto did capitalize on Connor Murphy's slashing penalty in the third period to cut the deficit in half with another power-play goal. Smith made a pad save on Kessel, but van Riemsdyk slid the rebound neatly to Franson, who had half the net to put in his second goal.
