Boston @ Toronto 1-6 - The Maple Leafs started the season with Kessel, Bozak and van Riemsdyk playing together, but the line was broken up for a few games after going a bit stale. Kessel scored his ninth goal of the season when he broke into the Boston zone on the right side and snapped a shot to the far side past Rask 6:46 into the first period. Kessel scored his second of the game 18 seconds into the second period when he broke in 2-on-1 with Bozak and elected to drill another snap shot past Rask. Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly scored his second goal of the season when he snapped a rebound past Rask from 20 feet out at 1:34 of the second period. When Bozak scored at 3:32, a tipped shot with the Bruins killing a penalty, Boston coach Claude Julien pulled Rask and replaced him with Svedberg. Toronto increased its lead to 5-0 at 9:51 when van Riemsdyk scored his seventh of the season with Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton in the penalty box for holding. Bozak tipped a Jake Gardiner slap shot from the point and it deflected into the net off van Riemsdyk. The Bruins thought they scored at 11:47 when Reilly Smith beat goalie Jonathan Bernier with Maple Leafs defenseman Cody Franson off for hooking, but it was waved off. Boston center Carl Soderberg was ruled in the crease. Boston did score when defenseman Dennis Seidenberg snapped a shot from the left point that beat Bernier at 14:16. Kessel had a chance to complete his hat trick when he broke in alone on Svedberg, but was stopped at 14:49. Peter Holland scored Toronto's third power-play goal of the game at 7:21 of the third period when he drove hard to the net, switched to his backhand and slipped a shot past Svedberg.
Los Angeles @ Anaheim 5-6 SO - Anaheim captain Ryan Getzbald forced overtime with a tip of Devante Smith-Pelly's shot at 18:21 of the third. Until then it appeared that Los Angeles was going to escape with a regulation win on a night when it was outplayed and outshot by the Sucks, 49-26. Justin Williams put in a big rebound left by LaBarbera at 11:01 of the third to give the Kings a 5-3 lead. But Anaheim came back with goals by Kesler and Getzlaf to electrify a standing-room only crowd of 17,245 that was treated to plenty of action. Los Angeles never trailed and took leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 5-3. It played the final 25 minutes with 10 forwards because Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson were benched in a bold message from coach Darryl Sutter. Cracks have shown in a Kings defense that is missing the injured Robyn Regehr and suspended Slava Voynov. The Kings chased Andersen after Trevor Lewis scored on a harmless wrist shot that beat Andersen glove side for a 3-1 Kings lead at 9:20 of the second. It was quite similar to Lewis' goal against John Gibson in Game 6 last spring. Anaheim got goals by Cam Fowler and Silfverberg to pull within 3-2 prior to second intermission, and it would have been different if Quick hadn't made 14 saves in the second period, including a highlight-reel stop against Rickard Rakell. The Sucks dictated play for most of the first period but Los Angeles took a 2-0 lead by taking advantage of the few chances they did have. Kings defenseman Drew Doughty scored his first goal of the season when he put the puck on net from his back foot at 19:11 of the first. Anze Kopitar forced a turnover in the corner to create the initial shot by Jake Muzzin. Kopitar scored on a penalty shot 9:21 into the game after being hooked by Sucks defenseman Sami Vatanen on a breakaway opportunity. It was the first penalty shot goal in Kopitar's career.
