Toronto @ Carolina 2-1 SO
After Peter Holland and Joffrey Lupul scored in the shootout to lift the Maple Leafs to a 2-1 win. The game didn't really take shape until the latter half of the third period; before that, tight defense yielded few scoring chances for either team. After holding a 22-12 advantage on shots through two periods, the Hurricanes broke the scoreless tie with 7:47 remaining in the third when Brad Malone scored from below the goal line, squeezing a shot inside the right post past James Reimer. Nazem Kadri tied the game 1-1 on the power play with 3:33 remaining in the third period, taking a short a pass from Leo Komarov and beating Cam Ward with a wrist shot in the slot. The goal was Kadri's second of the season and ended a 15-game drought. The game moved to overtime, where Justin Faulk was called for slashing the stick out of the hands of Komarov with 2:47 left. But Toronto couldn't get anything past Ward, who made 24 saves.
After Holland beat Ward under the crossbar to begin the shootout, the teams went scoreless until Carolina's third-round attempt, when Riley Nash beat Reimer between the pads to extend the shootout. After Tyler Bozak missed, Reimer delivered his best save, stopping Elias Lindholm with a low glove save, coming across the crease. That set up the game-winner for Lupul, who deked Ward before beating him over the glove with a wrist shot.
Mike Babcock: "Let's be real honest, they were better than we were. We played good defense and had good goaltending, but they were quicker and faster and executed better. To win in the shootout was positive, but we're not going to win every night, especially on the road. You stick with it and be resilient and get it done. When you're a good team, that's what you do."
Los Angeles @ Detroit 2-3
The Red Wings got a scare early in the third period when Larkin, their prized 19-year-old rookie, limped off to the dressing room after twisting his lower body awkwardly. But he returned. Green and Larkin scored 2:23 apart early in the second period to give Detroit a 3-1 lead. Green, who signed with Detroit as a free agent this summer, got his first goal as a Red Wing at 3:45 when he put in a loose puck from the inside edge of the left circle after playing the puck off his skate. Larkin put Abdelkader's rebound into a half-empty net at 6:08 for his seventh goal. Carter's second of the game pulled the Kings back within one.
His wrist shot from the right circle, off the rush, deflected into the net off Mrazek's glove at 10:43 for his ninth goal of the season. But neither team scored in the final 29:17. Tatar's power-play goal at 14:10 of the first period gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. He scored his sixth goal of the season on a one-timer into the empty side of the net from the bottom of the left circle after a blind, backhand, cross-crease pass from Abdelkader. Carter's shorthanded goal at 16:21 tied the game. With Drew Doughty off for tripping, Carter went in on a breakaway, deked and slid a backhander past Mrazek.
Montreal @ NY Islanders 5-3
Jeff Petry scored 2:52 into the first period to give Montreal a 1-0 lead. Brian Flynn's shot hit goalie Jaroslav Halak and the rebound came to Petry. Alexander Semin, who was in the lineup in place of Torrey Mitchell (day-to-day, lower body) assisted on the goal for his first point in six games. Brock Nelson tied the game 1-1 with his seventh goal of the season at 11:57. Tavares' shot from the slot appeared to get tipped on its way to Price, who stopped it before Nelson poked it behind him. The Canadiens used a coach's challenge for goalie interference, but the call on the ice was upheld. Tomas Fleischmann scored 35 seconds later to give the Canadiens a 2-1 lead, and Nathan Beaulieu made it 3-1 at 18:17, beating Halak with a wrist shot. Halak, who allowed three goals on 11 shots, was pulled after the first period; backup Thomas Greiss started the second and finished with 15 saves on 16 shots. Travis Hamonic, who played his first game since it became public that he has requested a trade because of personal reasons, scored his first goal of the season 39 seconds into the second period to make it 3-2. Petry scored his second at the end of a Canadiens power play at 14:49 of the period to give Montreal a 4-2 lead. His shot from the slot was deflected by Josh Bailey. Price made several big saves in the third period, including stopping Nick Leddy after he skated into the zone past two Canadiens and took a wrist shot on an Islanders power play. Nelson scored his second of the game at 7:25 of the third to pull the Islanders within 4-3. The Islanders' best chance to tie it came with 8:07 remaining. Matt Martin took a one-timer off a pass from Cal Clutterbuck that went past Price, but the entire puck never crossed the goal line. Brendan Gallagher scored an empty-net goal with 19 seconds left.
New Jersey @ Edmonton 1-5
Leon Draisaitl, the third player taken in the 2014 NHL Draft, has seven goals and 10 assists in 10 games since being recalled from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League on Oct. 29. He was moved to the Oilers' top line between left wing Taylor Hall and right wing Teddy Purcell after rookie center Connor McDavid sustained a fractured clavicle on Nov. 3. Draisaitl scored at 6:59 of the first period to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead, tipping a centering pass from Hall over Devils goaltender Keith Kinkaid. He also helped set up Oscar Klefbom's go-ahead goal at 7:12 of the second period that put Edmonton up 2-1 and picked up an assist on Hall's empty-net goal at 17:29 of the third period.
Kyle Palmieri tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal at 6:04 of the second period. He controlled the puck inside the Oilers' blue line, took it up the boards, then cut to the net and snapped a shot over Nilsson's shoulder for his seventh goal of the season. Klefbom put the Oilers ahead to stay, taking a pass from Purcell and firing a shot into an open net past Kinkaid. Kinkaid had gone down anticipating a shot from Purcell and was unable to get up and across his net in time to stop Klefbom. Eberle extended the lead to 3-1 at 3:23 of the third period on the power play. Eberle was stopped by Kinkaid on his initial attempt at the side of the net but was able to jam away at the puck and eventually knock it in. Letestu made it 4-1 at 13:18, capitalizing on a turnover. He had not scored in 12 games. Hall scored into an empty net with 2:31 remaining after Kinkaid was pulled for an extra attacker with more than three minutes left.
