Philadelphia @ Vancouver 1-4
Bo Horvat set up Jannik Hansen's early goal and scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period before Virtanen, a 19-year-old playing his ninth NHL game, scored on a nice individual move on a 2-on-1 rush 8:28 into the third period to give Vancouver a two-goal cushion. It capped a whirlwind couple of days for Virtanen, who along with fellow 19-year-old forward Jared McCann, thought he was being sent back to junior after being lectured by coach Willie Desjardins and veteran teammates while a series of video clips highlighting their early-season mistakes. Defensemen Matt Bartkowski scored an empty-net goal with 54 seconds left and Ryan Miller made 27 saves.
Virtanen gave them some breathing room on a 2-on-1 with Alexandre Burrows, keeping the puck, cutting into the slot and lifting a backhand under Flyers goalie Steve Mason's blocker-side arm. Claude Giroux tied the game 1-1 early in the second period and Mason made 30 saves for the Flyers. The Flyers almost tied it shortly after Horvat scored. Giroux got out of the penalty box and set up Wayne Simmonds in the slot, but his shot hit the left post behind Miller and bounced out. Miller only needed one tough save to kill off 1:51 of the Flyers' third power play to start the third period. Philadelphia had two shots and is 0-for-13 over the past five games and converting at 11.4 percent this season, less than half of last season's 23.4 percent success rate. Hansen opened the scoring 1:08 into the game on a 2-on-1, taking a pass from Horvat that caught Mason sliding to his left, and then cutting back across the other way. Horvat put the Canucks ahead during a 4-on-4 situation after offsetting minor penalties to Giroux and Daniel Sedin. Hornet skated behind the net and out the other side, holding off defenseman Mark Streit up to right hash marks before spinning and sweeping a low shot past Nick Schultz's block attempt and Mason's right pad, just inside the far post. Mason kept the Flyers in it while being outshot 8-1 early, denied Horvat on a breakaway just before Giroux tied it early in the second period, and got some help when Chris VandeVelde swept a bouncing puck off the goal in a scramble late in the period.

New Jersey @ NY Islanders 1-2
Cizikas scored with 2:12 remaining to give the Islanders a 2-1 win at Barclays Center. Cory Schneider stopped a left-point wrist shot by defenseman Brian Strait that was deflected by Matt Martin. But Cizikas fought for position in front of Schneider and put home the rebound for his second goal of the season. The line of Cizikas, Martin and Cal Clutterbuck helped the Islanders pile up 63 hits, the most by one team in a game this season. New York opened the scoring 7:23 into the first period. Marek Zidlicky's left-point slap shot was denied by Schneider, who also made a save on Nelson's rebound try. But the puck hit the skate of Eric Gelinas and was knocked into the net by Schneider, giving Nelson his third goal of the season. Schneider kept the Devils' deficit at one goal when he robbed Josh Bailey from point-blank range with 47.8 seconds left in the period. Halak preserved the Islanders' lead 2:30 into the second period when he stopped Adam Henrique on a rebound try after making a save against Kyle Palmieri during New Jersey's first power play of the game. He denied Stephen Gionta midway through the period when Gionta tried to jam home a loose puck in the crease. But with Strait off for slashing, the Devils tied it at 4:03 of the third when Zajac scored his fifth of the season, lifting a rebound over Halak. Four of Zajac's five goals have come on the power play. The Islanders debuted their Brooklyn-themed black third jerseys; they will wear them for 12 of their 41 home games.
Washington @ NY Rangers 2-5
Washington had 34 shots on goal and 67 shot attempts, but couldn't do enough to overcome Lundqvist's brilliance or a rare off night from their goalie, Braden Holtby. The Capitals were also burned by their own miscues that led to goals. Alex Ovechkin's goal was the 481st of his career. He needs two more to tie Sergei Fedorov for the most goals scored by a Russian player in the NHL. The Rangers had a 4-2 lead after two periods while being credited with 11 shots on goal, including two in the second period, when they scored two goals. Brassard was never credited with a shot on goal despite scoring at 6:59 of the second to make it 4-1; according to the off-ice officials, the goal was ruled an own goal.
It was an important goal because it gave New York a three-goal cushion. Johansson cut the lead to two with 1:07 remaining in the second period, but Lundqvist made 10 saves before Stoll scored at 10:53 of the third to give the Rangers a 5-2 lead. Each New York goal in the second period was scored off of Washington turnovers. The first came off of a turnover in the offensive zone by Ovechkin that led to a 4-on-2 rush finished by Klein's hard stick-side shot past Holtby at 1:53. Brassard scored after Mats Zuccarello forced Johansson to give up the puck on the left-wing half wall in Washington's zone. Brassard was attempting a diagonal pass to Rick Nash, but the puck went in off of Johansson, who was diving back to defend the play after the turnover. The Rangers two goals in the first period were a result of misplays or misreads by Washington's top defense pair of John Carlson and Brooks Orpik. Orpik had a giveaway behind the Capitals' net that led to Lindberg's goal off of a rebound. Carlson was too aggressive in defending the Rangers' breakout and didn't realize Hayes was behind him. Hayes got the puck and put a shot off of Holtby's glove and in at 17:46.
Ottawa @ Montreal 2-1 OT
Kyle Turris scored 34 seconds into overtime to give Ottawa a 2-1 win against the Canadiens at Bell Centre. Turris took a pass from Mike Hoffman and scored on Montreal goalie Mike Condon for his eighth goal on the first shot in overtime.
The Senators' previous overtime games were all decided by shootout, which they split, 2-2. Right wing Mark Stone, Ottawa's leading scorer, served the first game of a two-game suspension for his hit to the head of Detroit Red Wings forward Landon Ferraro on Saturday. Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban misfired his one-timer attempt on a pass back to the right point on the play that led to Pageau's goal. With Cody Ceci serving a high-sticking penalty, Pageau picked up the loose puck and drove straight down the ice to beat Condon with a shot between the legs for his second shorthanded goal. Weise tied it and got credit for his seventh goal at 6:13 when he converted a passing play that began with Montreal's David Desharnais regaining a puck along the boards. Desharnais passed the puck back to the left point to defenseman Andrei Markov. Alex Galchenyuk took Markov's cross-ice pass and fed the puck to Weise, who flubbed his shot but had the puck bounce up and off his legs on the way into the net. Tomas Plekanec appeared to have opened the scoring at 14:24 of the first, but his goal was immediately waved off by referee Chris Lee. Ottawa was denied an opportunity to take the lead in the third. Referee Garrett Rank immediately signaled no-goal at 4:55 because he had blown his whistle before Alex Chiasson jammed in the loose puck between Condon's pads.
Tampa Bay @ Detroit 1-2
Dylan Larkin gave the Red Wings the lead 5:54 into the third period. He cut in off right wing after working a give-and-go with Justin Abdelkader and stuffed the puck past Bishop. The goal came after Ondrej Palat tripped over Howard and knocked the Detroit net off its moorings, but play continued. It was Larkin's fourth goal of the season. Anton Stralman hit the goal post with 1:02 left. A shot deflected off Alex Killorn and off the goal post with about 10:50 left.
Kucherov hit the crossbar, off Howard's shoulder, with 12:18 left. Sheahan scored 2:02 into the second period for a 1-0 Detroit lead. He beat Bishop with a wrist shot from the high slot off the rush after knocking down a tip pass from Tomas Tatar with his glove in the neutral zone. It was Sheahan's second goal, first in eight games. Kucherov tied the game 1-1 with a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 4:02 left in the second. He put in a loose puck from the bottom of the right circle for his fourth goal.
Philadelphia @ Edmonton 2-4
Connor McDavid left the game late in the second period, crashing into the end boards after taking a shot on goal. With under two minutes to go in the second period, McDavid was injured when he lost an edge after taking a shot on a rush. The No. 1 selection in the 2015 NHL Draft went into the boards with Flyers defensemen Michael Del Zotto and Brandon Manning. The Oilers opened the scoring on their final shot of the first period after out-shooting Philadelphia 19-2. Nugent-Hopkins scored with 3.6 seconds left in the period, on the power play, jamming a Leon Draisaitl centering feed past Neuvirth. Draisaitl hit the post on an earlier attempt off a pass from Hall, but was able to collect the puck behind the net and center it to Nugent-Hopkins in front. The Flyers tied the game 34 seconds into the second period when Laughton put a rebound past Oilers goaltender Anders Nilsson, who finished with 20 saves. White gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead at 12:57, with his first goal of the season, putting a shot through traffic past Nilsson. Hendricks tied the game at 6:13 of the third period with his first of the season, taking a long rebound off the end boards and beating Neuvirth. Hall gave Edmonton a 3-2 lead at 7:40 feathering a pass in front, which eluded Neuvirth and slid past him into the net. Nugent-Hopkins scored into an empty net with 42.7 seconds left.
