Paul Martin scored his first goal of the season, against his former team, and Patrick Marleau scored his 1,000th NHL point to help the Sharks defeat the Penguins 3-1 at Consol Energy Center.
Martin Jones made 38 saves, and Brent Burns scored twice for San Jose, which has won the first five games of a six-game road trip. The Sharks, who were without coach Peter DeBoer because of a personal matter, play at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.
Marleau became the 83rd NHL player to reach 1,000 points, and 16th player to reach that mark playing with one organization, with the secondary assist on Burns' first goal. The 36-year-old played his 1,349th game with the Sharks since he was the No. 2 pick in the 1997 NHL Draft, held at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena.
The Penguins honored Martin with a video tribute during the first period, resulting in an ovation from the crowd. Martin, who said he did not expect it, raised his stick and applauded the crowd.
Jones' 11th win tied him with Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby for the NHL lead. Pittsburgh had won two in a row since holding a closed-door meeting following a 4-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils Nov. 14. San Jose was outshot 39-29 Saturday, but Marleau, who reached 1,001 points (462 goals, 539 assists) with another assist and has 13 points in 20 games, said he was impressed by its ability to win while not playing as well as it could.

Goals

* Burns, who leads NHL defensemen with seven goals, gave San Jose a 1-0 lead 7:54 into the first period after Marleau set up Joel Ward in the right faceoff circle. Ward one-timed a shot that bounced off Fleury's pad to Burns near the opposite circle, where he took a wrist shot toward an open net.
* Phil Kessel tied the game 1-1 on a power play 8:38 into the second period. Kessel's goal, which came on a wrist shot from just outside the San Jose crease, tied Malkin for the Penguins lead with seven.
* Burns scored his second goal of the game for a 2-1 lead. He took a wrist shot from the blue line that deflected off traffic past Fleury with 6:54 remaining.
* Martin, who returned to Consol Energy Center for the first time since spending five seasons with Pittsburgh, gave San Jose a 3-1 lead with a slap shot that hit off Marc-Andre Fleury's blocker and Ben Lovejoy before crossing into the net 8:27 into the third period. The defenseman also had an assist.

Patrick Marleau: “I guess just having everybody coming up and congratulating me and throwing different numbers out there, it starts to take a little bit of shape how big it kind of is. I think we haven't been our best."

Martin Jones: "They came out hard, but I thought we did a really good job. They were taking a lot of shots, but I don't think we were giving up any Grade A stuff. So we did a good job kind of weathering the storm a little bit and played a pretty solid game from there."
Steve Spott [Sharks assistant coach]: "His blue-line play, his ability to pull the puck across the blue line, it might be the best in this League. We know that. He's got a quick release, a hard release, and we know when he has it, let's make sure we get bodies to the net."
