Vitaly Shulakov fired Amur to victory against CSKA with two goals. The 32-year-old has never been the most prolific of forwards in a long career, much of which has been spent in Khabarovsk, but his two goals on Saturday earned his team a memorable win against the Western Conference high flyer. Shulakov got the game-winner in the 57th minute, converting a power play with a slap shot off Evgeny Zub’s pass. Ilya Sorokin was well screened in the CSKA goal and had little chance to react to a powerfully-struck shot that he saw late. That was Shulakov’s second of the night: in the 28th minute he had added to Tom Wandell’s opener to give Amur a 2-0 lead. However CSKA seemed to be on its way back into the game with goals from Dmitry Kugryshev and Andrei Svetlakov. The latter got his first KHL goal in his 13th game for the Army Men but five minutes later Shulakov ensured it counted for little.
Admiral v Severstal 1-4
A strong first-period display set Severstal on the way to a 4-1 win at Admiral. Sergei Dorofeyev, Pavel Chernov and Andrei Shefer made it 3-0 in the opening stanza before Konstantin Makarov and Yury Trubachyov traded goals in the third.
Metallurg Nk v Torpedo 3-4 OT
Sergei Kostitsyn’s overtime goal gave Torpedo a 4-3 win at Metallurg Novokuznetsk – but the home side gave up a 3-1 advantage in regulation. Ryan Stoa, Alexander Komaristy and Ignat Zemchenko put the host in control, but Vadim Khomitsky and Vadim Osipov pulled Torpedo level.
Sibir v Dinamo Minsk 2-3 OT
Another overtime winner saw Dinamo Minsk edge Sibir thanks to Nikita Komarov. Sibir’s Alexei Kopeikin tied the game at 2-2 late in the third period on the power play but the Eastern Conference leader could not go on to win it.
Vityaz v Barys Astana 4-3 SO
Vityaz defeated Barys in a shoot-out following a 3-3 tie. Olli Palola settled the outcome; Barys forward Nigel Dawes scored twice for the visitor in a losing cause.
Dynamo Moscow v Avangard 2-1 OT
Kirill Pilipenko made it two goals in two KHL appearances to help Dynamo to victory against the Eastern Conference high-flyer. The 19-year-old scored in his first ever KHL game on Thursday and followed that up by opening the scoring in Saturday’s encounter early in the second period. Much like his earlier goal, Pilipenko produced an opportunist strike, reacting fastest to the rebound from a Nikita Filatov shot and firing home a one-timer with goalie Denis Kostin stranded. That wasn’t enough to win the game, though: Vladimir Sobotka smashed home an impressive equalizer seven minutes later but throughout the season Dynamo’s defense has stepped up with some big goals and once again the blue liners came good in overtime here. Dmitry Vishnevsky came up with the winner on the power play, linking up with Mat Robinson and Alexei Tsvetkov to get onto the slot and beat Kostin.
Slovan v Ugra 6-0
Ugra made a bright start to this season, but in recent games the Eastern Conference outsider has suffered an alarming slump in front of goal. Saturday’s thrashing in Slovakia was the third successive game that the Siberians failed to score, and the fourth blank in five games. This time Barry Brust was the goalie on form, making 19 saves for his shut-out, but while recent defeats at Vityaz and Dynamo came by narrow margins this one was a hammering from the outset. Slovan took command in the first 10 minutes as goals from Patrik Lusnak and Rok Ticar made it 2-0. Ziga Jeglic added a third before the intermission to get the home crowd in full cry and the second period followed a similar pattern. Lusnak got his second of the night before Vaclav Nedorost and Pavol Skalicky stretched the lead to 6-0. The third period was goalless but Ugra had further cause to worry after managing just four shots on goal, hardly the kind of response that is likely to end this barren run.
Medvescak v Avtomobilist 2-3 OT
Yet another game went to overtime in Zagreb where Avtomobilist earned a 3-2 win over Medvescak. Alexander Torchenyuk got the game winner to add to his second-period goal. Jesse Saarinen and Radek Smolenak got Medvescak’s goals.
