The Anaheim Sucks finally found some offense on Tuesday. They scored early and often and built a three-goal lead by the first intermission. But they left American Airlines Center without any points. Antoine Roussel scored the game-winning goal with 1:28 left and the Ducks dropped a 4-3 decision against the Dallas Stars. Anaheim was outshot 17-2 in the third period. The Ducks were playing on the second night of a back-to-back; they were shut out for the fifth time this season in a 1-0 overtime loss against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. Roussel gave the Stars their first lead of the game when he tapped in a rebound at the near post after Ducks goaltender Frederik Andersen, who made 30 saves before leaving the ice with 1:56 remaining, denied an initial shot by Vernon Fiddler. Patrick Sharp, Cody Eakin and John Klingberg scored and Jamie Benn had three assists for Dallas. Antti Niemi made 17 saves. Mike Santorelli, Shawn Horcoff and Carl Hagelin scored for the Ducks, who played without captain Ryan Getzlaf. He will miss between four and 12 days with appendicitis.
Santorelli opened the scoring for the Ducks at 14:44 of the first with a power-play goal, which was Anaheim's first in 143:20. Cam Fowler fed Santorelli, whose shot from the edge of the left circle deflected in off Stars defenseman Jordie Benn. Horcoff, a former Stars forward, scored his first goal of the season with a wrist shot from the slot into an open net at 18:56. Fourteen seconds later, the Ducks made it 3-0 when Hagelin scored his first of the season. Ryan Kesler stole the puck from Alex Goligoski behind the net and then passed it to Corey Perry, who fed Hagelin in the slot. Sharp began the rally with his first goal as a Star on a power play at 7:40 of the second. Sharp sent a shot through Andersen's five-hole from the slot after a nice pass by Jamie Benn.
"It's always nice to put one in, especially when you're down 3-0," Sharp said. "It's nice to get the first one of the game and get some momentum individually and as a team. "It's nice to get the first one. I hope I get a lot more."
Dallas scored twice more late in the second period to make it 3-3 after 40 minutes. Eakin scored a shorthanded goal at 15:27 with a wrist shot over Andersen's blocker off the rush. It was an impressive turnaround for the Stars after a rough first period. Dallas tied it at 17:01 of the second when Klingberg scored on a tap-in at the near post. Anaheim had a great chance to regain the lead but a wrist shot by Hagelin from the left point at 13:06 of the third period hit the crossbar. Anaheim forward Andrew Cogliano played in his 631st consecutive game, the seventh-longest streak in NHL history.
Quotes
Antoine Roussel: "That's a huge team effort. Everybody contributed on that team, and that's awesome."Lindy Ruff: "We knew their desperation would be good. We weren't able to match it in the first period. It's a good lesson for us. We didn't compete, didn't win enough battles, and they turned the tide pretty quick on us."
Jamie Benn: "There were a lot of things said, most of it not so good. We talked as a group. We believe in each other."
